well you can get an analog capture card for about $100 that connects over USB for fixed data/audio bitrates, or around $300 for a PCI card with uncompressed capture, though of course then you need a Mac that supports PCI slots

And for miniDV, that obviously involves a conversion stage from digital to analog to digital, instead of the native format right off the tape, so that’s a bummer. I’m keeping a legacy Mac for that!
