I remember in the Matrix movies, the machines tried to create a perfect world so that humans would not want to disconnect from the Matrix. But people thought it was fake so they kept rejecting it. So then they did the exact opposite. They made a nightmare world. But it was too hostile. So they settled with a simulation of the late 20th century world. And they stayed.

Turns out that people doesn't want an utopia, they like to suffer.

I know it's a movie but there is some truth into that. I heard people talking that these times are more interesting than the previous ones because of all the events unfolding, as if they were enjoying themselves.
