No... It was ISIS
And they did it in Syria, Damascus and elsewhere.
Guess who funded them and who loves to destroy ancient sites?

The 1,500-Year-Old Giant the World Couldn’t Save......
Imagine if one of humanity’s greatest treasures disappeared forever in a matter of days. That is exactly what happened in Afghanistan in 2001, when the Taliban deliberately destroyed the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan—two breathtaking statues that had stood watch over the Bamiyan Valley for around 1,500 years.
The largest towered an incredible 55 metres (180 feet) high, making it one of the tallest standing Buddha statues ever created. Carved into the cliffs during the 6th century, they survived empires, wars, earthquakes and centuries of change—only to be reduced to rubble with explosives.
Their destruction shocked the world and sparked a global debate about protecting humanity’s shared cultural heritage.
Today, the empty niches remain as a powerful reminder that history, once lost, can never truly be replaced.
