It seems to me a key reason we have the contemporary politics we have is that many (most) of our political class, no longer see public service as their primary motivator, rather they are seeking to build (political) careers.
They still might say they're motivated by public service, but its not their primary motivation.
Some of you might argue, ever was it thus; but there seem to be many more career politicians than those driven primarily by a desire to serve than there once were?
