One simple statistic illuminates the current budgetary crisis across universities in England: adjusted for inflation universities now receive around 2/3 the level of funding per undergraduate that they got a decade ago.
Add that to inflation elsewhere (energy & building materials, for instance) & the financial crisis engulfing the sector is hardly surprising.
Given Unis are a key services export sector & vital for workforce planning, its just madness!
