… that's a BD-R that I burned in January, and here in July, it's unreadable.
I have a disc here that I've just tried on 3 separate drives (including the one that burned it), totally unreadable.
How the hell are we supposed to archive stuff? I've got about 300GB of data I want to archive off to hand to my soon-to-be-ex-workplace. BD-Rs with ~22GB/disc seemed the most logical choice.
- Unpowered flash media suffers bitrot due to the MOSFET control gate charges fading.
- Hard drive lubricants go solid causing stiction.
- LTO tape drives are too expensive, and often the cartridges have capacity over and above what's needed. The smaller cartridges for older drives are no longer manufactured.
Bluray seemed to be the only option with decent capacity and no moving parts to fail… but it seems the data retention on these things is rubbish.
