Northrop Grumman will repurpose technologies developed for NASA’s lunar Gateway to support infrastructure on the Moon’s surface. The company announced three Lunar Infrastructure Demo missions that would carry power, data and mechanical interfaces from the planned HALO module. The systems are intended to keep surface assets powered, protected and connected through the lunar night, with the long-term goal of supporting operations near the lunar south pole.
NASA said the demonstration payloads will fly on future Commercial Lunar Payload Services missions during Phase One of its Moon Base plans, which runs through 2029. Northrop says the first mission is planned for that phase and will be NASA-funded, but no launch dates, costs or specific payload details have been disclosed. NASA and the company are still finalizing the contracts.
Canada is also reshaping its Gateway contribution. The Canadian Space Agency is adapting technology from the Canadarm3 robotic arm for lunar applications and possible use on commercial space stations in low Earth orbit. MDA Space, the project’s prime contractor under a 1-billion-Canadian-dollar contract, is continuing design work as NASA shifts its focus from an orbital Gateway strategy toward a permanent lunar surface base.
