Imagine an insecure husband for instance, his wife brings him small things “you forgot to take out the trash” or “you were being snappy with me earlier”.

Because he’s insecure he views these bids for connection and repair (normal in marriage) as attacks on him and gets extremely defensive.

Over time his wife stops bringing him the small things, then the medium things, then anything at all.

He views her lack of complaints as peace in the house meanwhile she already quiet quit the marriage after realizing that honesty costs too much and her needs will never be met.

8 years later she hits him with divorce papers. He experiences it as a betrayal which came out of nowhere, but it was actually his insecurity which quietly eroded his marriage.

Even post divorce he is still unaware his insecurity caused it and the insecurity has now compounded and he takes it into his next relationship where it has a similar eroding effect.
