you could argue that they tactically had to vote for democrats and didn't have to do any kind of moral calculus for eich but they have had plenty of opportunity since then when they don't have to make a hard decision and nobody actually cares anymore because it was a long time ago. it persists with eich because it's about ingroup preference. why would I take someone's arguments seriously if ultimately they're just practicing ingroup preference and not really seriously applying a moral code
