Fun fact if you have frequent power outages.
Candles are now *considerably* more expensive (and worse for your lungs) than buying a few LED camping lanterns and disposable D batteries.
(Yeah that surprised me a few years back when I had to restock and ran the numbers.)
Rechargeable D batteries can bring that cost lower in the long-term (though cheapass lanterns with switchable batteries can fully drain batteries in ways that are harmful to the battery lifespan, so don't fully deplete them, don't mix them (different degradation & internal resistance) and recharge them when possible).
Avoid USB-rechargeable crap unless you can be *sure* it doesn't contain the "random incendiary device" kind of Lithium battery.
(Basically, [LiFePO/LFP](
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery) or [NiMH](
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel%E2%80%93metal_hydride_battery). Screw most of the rest.)
Quaint as they may be (and awful for your lungs), [incandescent](
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_mantle) [lanterns](
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantern#Fueled_lanterns) are simply not worth the cost in electrified areas or areas where solar panels are available.
