I liked Belize when I was there passing through about 20 years ago. The vibes were off in a few spots but at least at the time it was less violent than other places I went on that trip.
A friend of my dad's retired in the 90s and loaded his whole life into a used school bus and drove all the way to Belize from the PNW. He was there for 20 years before returning to the PNW to be closer to his grandkids. But I think he still spends winters down there in a condo.
