in UK during situations like this they don't go to the cells (unless they are being openly physically aggressive or their identities can't be verified).

They are given street bail and let out until they are either required to attend a Police station or charged to appear in Court, so can still attend work (but have bail conditions not to attend any other protests).

So its a more subtle chilling effect with less disruption on normal society.
