Some specific book rec's from friends (that I have not yet read) and why they may stand out:
MOCKINGBIRD, by Kathryn Erskine, features an autistic main character who must emotionally process tragedy.
PORTRAITS AT THE PALACE OF CREATIVITY AND WRECKING, by Han Smith, portrays life under an oppressive regime which is heavily haunted by its past.
STAG DANCE, by Trans author Torrey Peters (author of DETRANSITION, BABY) reveals her range through novella and short stories. The author has a knack for immersing the reader in the anxious tension of the story.
THE DEATH OF US, by Abigail Dean, is not a crime novel, though it looks like one (and even though a crime is central to the story). It is instead focused on how a single event can change the trajectory of our lives. Other authors have given the novel high praise for its unusual structure, and compelling storyline.
