I think I'm going to start a long-running series called #FavoriteFOSS where I mention some of my favorite open source applications and tools. Some will be well-known, some maybe not so.


We'll kick it off with ntfy.sh which is a simple tool to send yourself push notifications but can be used for so much more. Here are some examples of how I use it:
- Alerts from my home automation (doorbell pressed, laundry done, etc)
- Control Tasker on my phone and wall-mounted tablets from home automation and scripts
- A pub/sub backend for my clipboard syncing application (more on this another day)

Some of the features that make ntfy stand out against other similar applications:
- Incredibly easy to self-host (but there's also a free public instance)
- Flexible API (REST, websockets, SSE, and other means of interaction)
- Documentation for days (https://docs.ntfy.sh/)
- Multiple clients (Web, CLI, Android, iOS)
