Do you know of examples of a software library's test suite catching a bug in its upstream dependencies? I've seen a few of these over the years, and I'd like to put together a small list. Things like:
- A programming language implementation's test suite uncovering a bug in other implementations
- A library's test suite uncovering a bug in the language implementation itself
- A framework addon's / extension's test suite uncovering a bug in the framework

For PyCon US in particular, are you aware of / were you present for the 2019 "The Art of Python" Hatchery program (https://pycon-archive.python.org/2019/hatchery/artofpython/)? I mention this mostly as an example (among others) of conferences incorporating art that deviates from more "traditional" conference presentations into their schedules.

I (and I'm sure several of the other Conference Chats folks) would be happy to chat, though I imagine the answers would largely be brief and boring -- more offerings mean more (often volunteer) time and resources, which are scarce. Volunteering / organizing can help, provided there are not other limiting factors (which vary quite a bit from conference to conference, including venue time and space).

If you decide you want to complete that Contributing Membership process, it should only take a few minutes at https://psfmember.org/civicrm/contribute/transact/?reset=1&id=32, and I'm always happy to help folks enroll.
Keep in mind that historically you'll need to be enrolled as a member with voting privileges before candidate nominations are published. PSF elections are not any time soon, but I regularly see folks forget to enroll until it's too late to do so for an election they want to vote in.

I think I know what you mean by this, but can you elaborate on which parts of PSF and DSF memberships have you feeling uneasy (private message is fine with me as well)? For what it's worth, I have feedback for both of these membership programs and have only been a DSF member for a month, so I am coming at this from a "how to we make this whole process better?" angle.

I think those are just two separate questions. A planned and graceful transition can be difficult for a lot of people, but I read Jay's post as an opportunity to think on that deliberately and avoid the more drama-filled alternative of someone clinging onto their role long after it's outgrown them. I would personally welcome a week without a tech news site story about some community or project leader burning everything down, but seamless transition stories don't get clicks.

My YouTube recommendations are decidedly less fun (I highly recommend https://github.com/amitbl/blocktube for reining this in), but 3D printers can be fun. Before you buy one, check to see if your local libraries offer 3D printing. It's certainly not ubiquitous, but it's becoming more and more common from what I can tell.

Feel free to tell me to stay in my lane here, but may I also suggest broadening the community events language? e.g. many of us Python conference organizers factor Django's place in the Python web dev community when into the talk selection process. (Obviously there are Python events that are wholly unrelated to Django as well, but all of these things tend to be trusting that people won't abuse the system, anyway.)

I'm vaguely curious about what it would take to run something like that at a large enough scale that it paid any bills. I imagine it makes some sense for people who design the objects they sell (and maybe eventually plan to move to a larger volume method of manufacturing?), but the model of just printing something from thingiverse on demand feels like a real race to the bottom.

If you've attempted to register as a PSF member (of any membership tier), have had trouble doing so for whatever reason, and are willing to share your experience, please PM me. I did the trendy thing of buying rollerblade wheels for my office chair that was already too tall for me even at its lowest setting. I've finally replaced them with a lower-profile (even lower-profile than the original hard plastic wheels) polyurethane set, and I notice an immediate improvement. Not perfect, but definitely better.

There's also https://www.python.org/users/membership/ for the prerequisite Basic Membership enrollment, which is linked from the individual enrollment forms.
I tend to use https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there as a source of truth because it links to the different membership class forms individually and directly, but I'm not sure if there is a more dedicated or succinct page for this purpose. I don't think psfmember.org links to the Contributing and Managing options from the home / landing page.

I am happy to help with the voting membership registration if you'd like. There's a form at https://psfmember.org/civicrm/contribute/transact/?reset=1&id=32 that shouldn't take 15 minutes (and will hopefully become simpler soon), and if you've donated within the past year, you should also be eligible for a "supporting membership".

Some context: I'm pretty active within the world of Python community organizers. The angle that I haven't seen brought up as much: the PSF's actions and endorsements have real power that extend beyond the PSF itself. Community organizers throw around the question "what does PyCon US do?" *a lot* when they have decisions to make. A PSF Fellowship is a pretty strong signal that someone would be a great addition to a Python community (of which there are many).

This is not something presented as "person did a good thing once", it's a lifetime credential that should include the expectation to continue to follow the Code of Conduct. This is not a high bar. No one is asking that Fellows continue doing extraordinary work (although plenty of them do), just to maintain the basic conduct that is expected of all community members.

I have a more verbose blog post about this that I may or may not publish, but tl;dr: the PSF being able to make endorsements that someone is "an example of what we aspire to be in the Python community" but unable to revoke them for Code of Conduct reasons is a problem. Many people view PSF Fellowships as a Big Deal™, and the title carries weight.
