Hanging out at makerspaces, coffee shops that are actually interesting, hacker meetings, luddite groups, and do forth.
But the limitation of only being able to connect with people who are geographically nearby is a drag. For public online chatter: Mastodon/Fediverse/ActivityPub seems to be pretty good. Not perfect, but nothing is.
My part of the change is to focus on to places where I'm happier. It's self interest. But if people want to draw a bigger picture out of it, they could say it's starving the echo chamber of attention, one person at a time. Conversely, one could also say it's strengthing the echo chamber to weed out those who aren't participating. 🤷‍♂️

I'm getting bored with nostr. Maybe I'm just following the wrong people, but it seems to be an echo chamber about how great the protocol is and platitudes about bitcoin.
Interesting content outside of those two topic areas doesn't get many boosts, so when people do post it, it frequently doesn't get discovered. I've found maybe 8 people on here who post that kind of stuff. That's a pretty small social network.
Combine that with the bots and technical issues DMs no longer being reliable and it's no wonder so many people bounce off and then tell all their friends not to bother with nostr.
Since I delivered these bitter truths about my experience here, I'm already bracing for the reply guys who are going to tell me that I am the problem, or that it's not that bad. Probably at least one insinuation that I oppose freedom of speech or I'm using the wrong client. You know, the usual beratement and gaslighting.

I was thinking about the "energy money" episode of the home mining podcast and it didn't feel right, but I couldn't immediately articulate why. I figured part of it out.
1. It only counts labor as calories and ignores costs such as the years of experience that yields more food per unit of enerfy expended (companion planting, crop rotation, microclimates, etc.).
2. One Joule doesn't have a fixed value. Does it make sense for the value of bitcoin to go up when there's a heat wave and eveyone turns on the air conditioning? Or go down on an exceptionally sunny day? The value of the labor you invested at the time you earned those sats didn't change, so why should the value you earned change, rather than be preserved? After all, that's literally what "store of value" means.
3. A Joule doesn't have a fixed cost eithrr, so pegging sats to a number of Joules seems like it would only devalue over time as we get better at producing energy.
I think both the guests are exclusive to X, so they'll likely never see these points, but if I'd be happy to have them explain the gap here and convince me of their argument.

We might have the same model. Economy. Only intrerface is a single knob on top for temperature. No frills.
In retrospect, I'm glad I got this model. The amount of time it takes to dry varies across apple varieties, and probably within them too depending on how full I load up the trays. Not much point in having a timer IMO.

They're certainly "better" incentives if you are the one getting the inheritence.
As for everyone else, there is no incentive to make your life better. They don't have to answer to the people.
I think we can agree on the timescales for dictators vs democratically elected folks (especially those with term limits). We can lament that together.
But I do not believe monarchs have incentives which are more aligned with the average person. They might _choose_ to do right by the commoner, but the only incentive is to not make people's lives so untolerable that you get overthrown.
Change my mind.

Imagine software that could tell you about companion planting, figure out the optimal layout for what you want to grow this season, along with the number of eacch plant, when to start seeds, transplant and come up with a crop rotation plan.
That's not the power of AI, but that's the power of software. The problem is that these tools do not exist. Faint fractions of them exist.

Yeah, not many people use Go. Sounds like nobody has duplicated the work that has gone into the Python library. But hey, you could change that. Go probably already has protobuf libraries to do all the encoding.
I can attest that Meshtastic dev is incredibly easy in Python, so if you just port all that to Go it should be smooth sailing after that.

OK, #bitcoin folks. If you run a lightning node and want to open channels to one another, I'm down. DM me for my node info. You open a channel to me, I open an equal channel to you (assuming you're not a baller who is going to open up some crazy huge amount like a .05 BTC channel or something; I'm a geek but I ain't rich).
I have channels to some of the big nodes and plan on opening more, so hopefully my fees will be lower than going through a single LSP. I'm not doing this as a business, I'm doing it because I want more #decentralization, so I can afford to have low AF fees. If going through me is as few or fewer hops as going through a big LSP, it should save you some fractions of a cent. 😝
I do ask that you actually USE your lightning node though. Even if you don't buy anything and it's just for zaps. Even if it doesn't go through our channels.
And I do take suggestions on to whom I should open channels. I do plan on hitting up as many of the #nostr vendors as I can and seeing if I can open a channel to them directly. Failing that, I'll open a channel to the LSP they use.

Ugh. Contractors.
Had a communications error on my thermostat (system was installed in 2022, has a 10 year warranty on parts and labor).
Called up the same company that installed it, told them that resetting it from the stat fixes it for about 30 seconds, powering off the HVAC at the breaker fixes ot for a few days. Said I thought it was probably the HVAC side, but just wanted them to come out and take a look.
They come out and say the electric heat walire shouldn't be connected. (Context: it uses modbus, not the traditional relay system, ajd it has been wired that way since it was installed and worked fine the whole time). OK. They flipped the breaker to change the wires, so we couldn't tell if the fix really worked, but the tech seemed confident.
Next day: comm error again. Call them back, they come out and replace the stat. Also flashed the firmware on both HVAC boards
Again, since they flipped the breaker, we can't really tell if it worked, but the same tech was confident this would do it and if not said the next step would be to replace thr HVAC board.
Next day: I get a bill for $260 for that first call. Call them up and ask if it's covered under warranty. It's covered, but the charged me more for labor than is covered because they have to drive an hour each way. OK, I pay the $130 that wasn't covered.
Evening that same day: comm error again. It was after hours, so I emailed a photo of the error in to them explaining that the new stat didn't fix the issue, I understand the board will need to be replaced and that might take time to get the parts in. No worries, I can manage with flipping the breaker every few days. Also, I'd be happy to just have you come deal with this next time you are in town to save you the travel time, and me the money.
They reply: the tech thinks the stat wire might be getting interference from the power line that's run next to it.
I take about 35 minutes crafting as polite of an email as I can explaining that it's been wired like this from the start and nothing has changed, that I realize I'm not the HVAC expert, but I was skeptical about the first two resolutions and neither of them worked. I explain that I am frustrated that it's taking 3+ trips to resolve this issue. I ask if we can just replace the board instead.
They give me a one-sentence reply. WaterFurnace said we should re-run the stat wire, so that's what we're goi g to do.
I simply ask if it'll be partially or fully recovered by warranty. It's been 5 days and they haven't answered, or even ackowledged my question.
So yeah. I'm frustrated. Just venting (haha). No need for trying to solve the problem.
But I will say that I'd prefer a permissionless system for warranty repairs instead of this "authorized repairpersons only" approach.

I plan on expanding functionality of the #meshtastic bot every week or two.
I have regular hangouts with fellow hackers where we apl work on our own projects, sometimes collaborate and always kibitz, and this is the perfect type of project. Small, simple, doesn't require much concentration, tolerant of constant interruption due to comments from the peanut gallery, can make tiny iterative changes. 👨‍🍳💋

I'm not sure what happened that time. I think it was a fluke. I started printing the exact same file again to see if it happened every time, but then I realized I can check the threads with that failed print. They were still too tight, so I aborted the re-print. I got the tolerance right eventually.
I never did do anything to fix the issue partway up the shaft, hence my conclusion that it was a fluke. Maybe the spool got tangled and caused an airgap before it snapped out of it? We'll never know.

That battery is a 26700, and the cube on top is the perfect size to hold a tiny #meshtastic node. Those have substancially more energy than the 18650s. Battery has lasted over a week (and counting) of 24/7 usage without a charge.
Antenna is in a sleve, which is just barely visible on the right hand side of the 4th case from the left.

I managed to write a #meshtastic simple bot in a night.
It is Python code that runs on a computer and uses a Meshtastic node connected via serial.
DM it commands and it'll DM you responses.
Currently the only real command is /wiki TOPIC which will search wikipedia for TOPIC, and give you the first 200 bytes of the wikipedia page that is the closest match.
Allows a tiny research if you're out and about with a meshtastic mode but without a cellphone (or at least cell data service).
I plan on briding it to my self-hosted Matrix server next. And someday, I'd like to have a local copy of wikipedia so that will also work without the internet. The sky is the limit, as long as we don't want to send much data. LOL

Not sure it made a difference in my cognitive abilities, but at least I was productive. Going to chill with some mates this evening and just shoot the breeze. Should be relaxing.

I was the primary instigator, but I wouldn't have done so without other people who stepped up to help.
Mentors and clients come from spreading the word. Some people are both (e.g. get help fixing some mechanical things, help someone else sew some things).
Spreading the word is hard, especially for someone who has large enough moral qualms with Facebook that we don't have an account on any Meta service. I've been using Nextdoor because that's what people around here use and they're not as evil as Meta. Also going to community block parties, recycling events, trying to partner with various groups, posting fliers on physical bulletin boards, private Matrix channels to remind the regular hackers & makers, and most of all: asking people to tell their friends.
No time banking. No scheduling coordination either. People show up if and when they feel like it. If they enjoy the challenge of fixing some random object, they'll usually come back, at least ocassionally if not regularly. So far we've had 4-8 mentors at every event.

Tonight was our most successful Repair Café to date! We had a good nine of mentors, a line out the door, people waiting in the lounge for a mentor to become available, and nobody bright in things we couldn't fix. Some required parts we didn't have on hand, but they're going to come back next time with the parts in hand.
I think the coolest thing this month was that we fixed a Toyota product (BTW, our Repair Café is in the basement). It was the battery pack out of a Prius which had some bad cells. I wasn't directly involved in that one, but I was told it was successful, including rebalancing the cells.

Yeah, I was doing similar math on video games. Compare the hundreds of hours I've spent playing Fallout as compared to going to the movie theater. Suffice to say, I got my money's worth.
For me, I'd just switch to using my own servers for social media. So zero dollars directly, but there's still certainly a cost.

The real answer is 3 years 142 days (just under 3.5 years).

I haven't done a comprehensive analysis to back this up, but that's what it looks like by manually looking at historical charts.

Wait, no. That's not right. It says 16 Dec 17 was 1477 days since the ATH, but the price was $17,604.80. But if you look back over the past 4 years, it was hitting ATHs constantly.
Everything in this chat looks backwards. If it's going up to new highs, the line should be red (zero days since ATH), but it's purple on the way up and red on the way down.

That means everyone who held for that long has made a profit, even if the person who had literally the worst timing possible.

I just made the worst chocolate chip cookies of my life.
I substituted in coconut flour for chickpea flour, but I made the mistake of doing it by weight instead of volume. They were way too dry and even adding some oil didn't save them.
⭐⭐Two stars. I'll eat them so they don't go bad.
If they scored any lower, I'd pitch them directly in the bin.

Is your table the same distance in from the edge of the paper as mine?

Yeah, beef broth is dark, but I've never seen it THAT dark. And I don't know what would be darker broth than bovine.

Even if I don't make the cormers line up, my middle column is always too small. Maybe I printed with the wrong margins (I used the default)?

M. (suggestion) Put the variations above the description instead of below it. With a long description, the user currently has to scroll all the way up to the top to see the image, and then all the way back down to the bottom to switch color, and then all the way back up to the top to see the picture of that color... It would be more user friendly to put the variation selection next to the images which will be updated.

I. Can't embed a video of the product in the product listing
J. Can't link to things in the product listing (e.g. the getting started guide)
K. The "primary" image shows up when viewing the product briefly, but then it switches to the image for the first variation.

BTC Postage bug report:
I. email isn't listed as a required field on the registration page, but it is.
II. When email is omitted, no errors are shown. It effectively refreshes the page leaving the user to wonder WTF just happened.
Not sure where to send this, but these should go into your issue tracker so they can get fixed.

If anyone wants to do an amazing art project, capture all these YouTube videos saying "we have 900 days left" or that 2026 is going to see a huge crash or "we are not ready"... you know, all the sensational clickbait of today.
Then post about them later to either credit or roast the prophets AND THE PEOPLE WHO PROMOTED THEM.
Because failing to vet your guests who are spouting nonsense should be something for which they should be accountable.

Here's an idea for a service that would financially help open source projects.

The TL;DR is that it'd let people set a budget for voluntary contributions (e.g. $100/month) and enable people to make decisions about who gets how much. The donor would be charged a single payment using whatever sysyem they prefer (Venmo, CashApp, or whatever) and each of the recipients would get paid via whatever means they prefer (bitcoin, PayPal, etc.)
They go into more detail in their post, so if this sounds interesting to you, I'd encourage you to read the source material.
I'm curious to hear what y'all nostrinos think of this. Some of you are into payment processing, #v4v, #OpenSource and other topics which seem relevant here.

No, not crumbly. I've had requests from others in my household for chewy apple ships instead of crispy ones, so I've been doing 3/8" instead of 1/4" or 1/8".
Side benefit: thicker slices means less work for me.
