datacentre project status so far for those who give a shit:
- agreed to pricing and terms from interactive (42ru rack, 4kw power & 1x cross-connect) & aussie broadband (1gbit DIA & /28 subnet) for a total of $2626/m inc. GST, been waiting all week for them to send me a contract to sign, silence since monday arvo
- will have 30RU & 2kw spare for a while, worked out I can sub-lease this out to anyone interested for about 60c per watt per month (e.g: if your server uses 150W it's $90/m inc GST) with unlimited fair use of the 1gbit link, your own IP address, OOB/console access via tailscale and your own access card to the rack/DC
- waiting for CPUs & RAM to arrive from overseas to fill up one of the supermicro servers, ETA for CPU is 5th March, ETA for RAM is monday
- waiting to hear back from various aussie supermicro partners if they can get me an NVMe kit for my server, going to keep scouring EU & US sites in the meantime
- mucking around with virtfusion instead of proxmox for the BYO HDD idea, seems great for what i need, hope it doesn't throw any surprises at me while I'm testing it
- catching up next week with a former colleauge who is the smartest network engineer I know to get some tips & sanity check my network design so I don't fuck it up when people start paying me (i've been off the tools for a while!)
- pretty much decided on an Arista 7050TX-64 as a switch (48x 10gbps RJ45 ports & 4x 40gbps QSFP+ ports) and OPNsense as a router, I still need to decide on a cheap, but power efficient 1RU box to that has at least two 10gbps SFP ports to run it on
- building a website & community forum, along with some documentation
- eta for starting to move gear into the DC is april 13th

got quotes from Megaport and Aussie Broadband for "DIA" (direct internet access) coming in today that will be enlightening - also been on the blower with digicor to get a quote for an NVMe enablement kit for the supermicro server, that should come in today too but the sales guy couldn't promise anything because supermicro have been prioritising big hyperscalers (*cough* AI *cough*) instead of smaller customers

did a bit of research into shoving servers into a refrigerated shipping container - it's a solid idea and can work but there's too many unknowns:
* perfect size for servers - can fit 400RU
* insulation means efficient use of cooling
* relatively affordable @ $30,000 once off vs $30,000/yr
* can be placed anywhere, noise not a problem
but some bad bits:
* need to pay more to get the container customised for cable entry (at least 1x power & 1x data)
* would get internet connected to a building (need permission from building owner), then run fibre from NTD/router to container outdoors - expensive
* same with power - need to run power from building to container, few thousand bucks all up
* finding a property that would let me do this, has enough spare power and in ABB's fibre footprint

A little tip for anyone who has a large ATO bill to pay - Officeworks has a $1000 pre-paid Visa with a $9 activation fee and paying the ATO with a Visa debit card incurs no fee.
To pay a $115,000 tax bill (capital gains tax from selling a property for example):
* Spend $116,035 on the pre-paid Visas at Officeworks. That'll get you 261,078 Amex rewards points (can be converted to 116,035 Qantas points if that's your airline of choice).
* Pay the ATO $10,000/day (the max they take is 10x payments a day), so it'll take 12 days to pay em.
* $1,035 goes to the pre-paid Visa issuer in activation fees vs 0% paying via BPay, but you get 116,035 Qantas points at a rate of 0.79c per point.
* It's also better than Sniip which works out to 1.88c/QFF point, or paying directly with the Amex at 2.9c/QFF point.
It's better to buy gift cards when Woolworths/Coles has a sale so you get bonus Flybuys/Everyday Rewards points on top, or when there's a $0 activation fee sale, but those are rare these days, plus they're often only on $100 or $250 cards. A 115x $1000 cards are way less hassle to pay the ATO with than 1150x $100 cards!

A not for profit/co-op that people who also hate Facebook can donate to and it funds the server, storage & bandwidth costs for non-commercial communities to migrate away from Facebook groups, along a team of people (i.e: me, maybe someone else if it gets popular) to do the backend server nerd stuff so they don't have to and don't have to pay for it either.
I don't know if that's the only stumbling block for groups to get the fuck off Mark Zuckerberg's shithole slop factory - the Facebook network effect is strong - but it’ll remove one less barrier.

This slipped under the radar - age verification for search engines in Australia to start in "no later than six months" after the “Internet Search Engine Services Online Safety Code (Class 1C and Class 2 Material)” was accepted by the eSafety Commissioner a few days ago. They're gonna require age verification for way more than just social media.

what I wanna know is how do these sites stand up financially? are they loss leaders to sell cars (maybe, but they're open to all EVs, so it's not like you need a Tesla to use them) or do they genuinely make money and Tesla is the only company operating in Australia with the knowledge and capital to invest in the sites of this size?

Say what you will about Tesla (there's a lot to say), but they're still the only company serious about building proper EV fast charging sites on the busiest routes in Australia - they're currently building a 20-stall site in Goulburn and a 12-stall site in Coolac (in addition to 12 in Yass and 16 in Albury), both along the Hume in desperately needed locations. Chargefox & Evie are doing sweet fuck all along the Hume in comparison. BP & Ampol doing even worse.
