The protocol only uses (local) DNS for backwards compatibility with IP packets so that you don't have to rewrite an application to use FIPS. This is not needed when someone uses the FIPS api directly (not implemented yet).
It's somewhat inspired by NoDNS, but it doesn't use it.
It could be used to decouple some keys. Allowing you to put important keys in cold storage. FIPS keys need to be hot.

there is zero ipv4
the reason you see ipv6 is because of the TUN adapter used for supporting good ol' fashioned TCP/IP traffic.
It uses local DNS to make this work.
How it works:
- Application (ping, curl, browser) makes DNS request for `npubABC...123.fips`
- DNS responds with deterministic IPv6 address (fd00::/8)
- Application does its thing and sends the request
- FIPS TUN adapter intercepts all IPv6 packets for fd00::/8 and turns it into FIPS packets
- FIPS Session protocol packets are sent to `npubABC...123`

That's only if you choose to. npubs are free to generate.
You can (not implemented) easily have dozens of npubs on one device, all looking unrelated to the network. Unlike IP addresses, you can cycle through them over time.

Probably a 'relay' type server for arbitrary binary streams would be useful. With payments + access negotiation over nostr. There's many more applications that would benefit from such a system.

Using multiple apps on the same phone with overkapping content, restarting an app and revisit posts. And being offline are the main points.
Or events/media you've aquired without public relays.
- If someone gave you a massive SD card with content
- it's already on your home blossom server
- it's already on a community blossom server
Not necessarily storing forever but couple days maybe, whatever one's preference is.

Yup exactly. It would function similar to local relays. The only difference with files being that you know exactly which one you want and then prioritizing this specific blossom server.
Thinking about it: It could be any arbitrary number of blossom servers to try fetching from BEFORE attempting a public one.
If all events + images/vids we watch are stored locally for a certain duration we can also keep using the app more easily when we're offline. And save massive amounts of bandwidth (==battery) in the process

Imagine these maps on mobile for a 8 day hiking trip through wilderness... No reception.
You carry the map, you post comments around water sources or (snow) conditions. You pass someone opposite direction l. You sync up your local relay + blossom.
That person then carries that over to everyone walking behind you that otherwise would've never known recent conditions.
The fact this is now feasible is still mind-blowing to me!

Really good read. Also don't forget all the stuff we get for free by building on nostr. The models have less complexity to deal with regarding data integrity. Aka, database migrations, user account management. That's a HUGE benefit as compared to legacy web apps.

I agree optimization is an issue. I think not everyone got the Paradigm shift yet that data can and should now be closer to the consumer, which means also on our devices themselves.
There is zero reason any nostr-app on my phone should download an event again if I've just seen it in another app.
If implemented right, spotty or even absent connections should be barely noticable...

I agree, immutable is what i want as well. I realized only after implementing that @npub1ye5…knpr just updated the spec. This one still uses the old spec.
nvevent1 in domain name might be tricky as there's a 63 character limit to domains.
One option is to have one immutable event for each version of a site, like a snapshot. And one replacable version of the same event to quickly find the latest version. That way I can 'pin' or rollback any version from my end.

The first load both caches it AND saves to your local relay/blossom setup.
It comes with embedded relay and blossom. If you have your own configured it will use that instead.
I've tested this on Ubuntu (24) and MacOS (Sonoma) btw.

I think the consequences will show over the long term. I don't think people get unhealthy because they're overweight. I think they get overweight because they're unhealthy.
Meaning, you can take away the symptom. But you're not fixing the root cause (i think we agree on that).
What the exact outcomes will be I can't tell... But when you take a shitty diet that still contains too few nutrients, and then give people something so that they eat less of it, but still the same crap food. You end up with someone more malnourished than they already were, further amplifying the shortage of necessary nutrients.
I'm sure they'll sell another pill for issues arising from that cycle.
To the last part of your question, I see rumors people struggle with severe gut issues (indigestion) and depressive/suicidal ideation within months after taking it. It's hard to quantify this stuff as truthful sources of this kind of data are scarce unfortunately.

Some of 'our' old habits will carry over to nostr for a while, but this article will not be shown to other people just because I'd be tempted to click on it.
That only happens (organically) were I to reshare or zap it. Those actions will depend on my perceived value of the content. Which, if it's slop, will be zero and then the virality ends there.
I think titles and thumbnails like this do not help one succeed long term on Nostr.
