I was ill last week and discovered something uncomfortable: a huge Jellyfin library isn't entertainment, it's homework. Every time I opened it, it asked "what do you want?" and I just scrolled.
So I built a TV station instead.
ErsatzTV turns a media library into real linear channels with schedules and logos. It ships for Linux, Windows and macOS. My server runs FreeBSD.
Turns out the entire porting effort was one conditional. The code asked "is this Linux?" when it meant "is VAAPI available?" VAAPI is userspace, FreeBSD has it, and .NET has had OSPlatform.FreeBSD for years.
One || later: Intel hardware transcoding in a Bastille jail that can see exactly one GPU and one read-only dataset.
I now have a sci-fi channel. I don't know what's on tonight. That's the point.

I use a Fairphone, where the back is made out of plastics and all key components are replacable within few minutes and just a single screwdriver bit. Might not be as water-resistant as an iPhone, but it's so much easier to repair.

Home Assistant OS runs in a bhyve VM, but bhyve has no USB passthrough, so Zigbee2MQTT and Mosquitto live in a VNET jail with the ConBee II.
Homematic comes in via a CCU3, and three IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices use my Nanoleaf Shapes controller as their border router.
Three radio ecosystems, 474 entities, one dashboard.

im PLZ Gebiet 67/68 fallen aktuell relativ viele Züge immer wieder aus. Was ich aus privaten Quellen gehört habe, liegt das häufig daran, dass das Stellwerk in Ludwigshafen am Rhein personell schwierig aufgestellt ist und wenn da jemand krank wird oder anderweitig ausfällt, gibt es direkt Einschränkungen im Zugverkehr. In den letzten Wochen hatte ich etliche Ausfälle und habe mehr Zeit am Mannheimer Bahnhof verbracht, als mir lieb ist.

New post: Monitoring our FreeBSD Mastodon instance.
burningboard.net runs as a stack of Bastille jails on FreeBSD, so I watch it from a separate box with Prometheus, Grafana and Loki. The interesting part is the FreeBSD-shaped gaps: no native ZFS metrics, nothing for the Mastodon API or our S3 media bucket. A small textfile collector fills all of it.

Nie wieder eON .. Was ich in den 4 Monaten erlebt habe, seitdem die mein Stromanbieter sind, ist beinahe schon Comedy:
- Im März kam am gleichen Tag eine Ablehnung und eine Vertragsbestätigung (beide Briefe zusammen im Briefkasten)
- Seitdem erhalte ich alle ~3-4 Wochen einen immer identischen Brief mit der gleichen Vertragsbestätitung (gleiche Vertragsnummer, gleiche Zählernummer)
- Jetzt haben sie den Abschlag einfach so von 76,00€/mon auf absurde 18,00€/mon herabgesetzt?!
- In der Hotline ist man bemüht, sieht sich aber nicht in der Lage, die ständigen identischen Briefe erklären oder abstellen zu können.
Der Grund für den plötzlich geänderten Abschlag laut Hotline war "Unsere Fachabteilung hat ihren Jährlichen Verbrauch geschätzt. Aber die Zahlen sehen eher nach Leerstand aus, als nach einer bewohnten Wohnung.. " ...
AAHHH Was für eine Dystopie ist das hier?!

Ich beneide heute jeden, der es schafft ein Buch zu lesen. War mal eines meiner größten Hobbies. Im weiteren Verlauf meiner Covid19 Erkrankung in 11/2024 habe ich das notwendige Level an Konzentration verloren. Ich kann noch eine handvoll Seiten lesen, dann schluckt der "brain fog" irgendwann den Inhalt. Ich kann dann weiter lesen, aber der Inhalt manifestiert sich nicht mehr in meinem Kopf. Anfangs klappt dann "noch mal den Abschnitt lesen" noch gut, aber das wird nur immer schlimmer und anstrengender. Habe auch mal Hörbücher versucht, aber das klappt leider auch nicht gut (same effect. Der Kopf schaltet einfach ab) 😮‍💨

Renting in Germany means no split AC bolted to the facade, so my top-floor 1970s office got the consolation prize: a single-hose "monoblock" portable.
Plot twist: the compressor was never the problem. The window was. These things leak most of their cooling back in through the unsealed hole the exhaust hose runs through.
My fix: a cheap XPS panel clamped under the roller blind, hose port sealed with rubber tape. No glue, no marks, comes out when summer ends. Dropped the room 6 to 7 °C in 45 minutes.

Sechs Jahre nach Beginn der letzten Pandemie habe ich das ungute Gefühl: Bei der nächsten wären wir gesellschaftlich schlechter vorbereitet als 2020.
Nicht, weil wir weniger wissen. Sondern weil ein Teil der Gesellschaft inzwischen jeden Schutzreflex vorsorglich bekämpft.
Viren? Werden angezweifelt. Impfungen? Waren angeblich das eigentliche Problem. Masken, Abstand, Händehygiene? „Mache ich nie wieder mit.“
Wenn eine relevante Gruppe sinnvolle Maßnahmen aus Prinzip verweigert und Behörden Regeln kaum konsequent durchsetzen, wird Eindämmung sehr schwer.
Ich hoffe, ich irre mich. Aber ich fürchte: Die nächste Pandemie würde nicht nur medizinisch, sondern vor allem gesellschaftlich eskalieren. Und wir haben die medizinischen Folgen der letzten noch gar nicht unter Kontrolle.

My Proxmox VE is now officially using Keycloak OIDC for authentication, and the setup is fantastic:
- Centralized Users: Managed alongside my other apps (Keycloak using my LDAP as the backend).
- Hardware MFA: Locked down with a FIDO2 stick from @npub1rqk…dxqz
- Unified Control: Centralized policies, logging, and RBAC across the board.
Another great improvement for my HomeLab/SelfHosting setup.

I know "AI" is a polarizing topic around here, but I wanted to share a small side-project I've been tinkering with to scratch a personal itch: MastoSum.
It’s a lightweight web app that listens to public streams, filters for the hashtags I actually care about, and uses an LLM to generate a daily digest of the last 24 hours. Basically, a personalized news feed to help cut through the noise.

Als ob die 157 € Profit pro Wohnung/Monat nicht schon absurd genug wären, hier noch die Pointe des Mieten-Monopolys:
Der mit Abstand größte Vonovia-Aktionär ist der norwegische Staatsfonds (~14 %).
Das heißt auf gut Deutsch: Deutsche Mieter:innen und das Jobcenter finanzieren mit ihren Mieten direkt das norwegische Rentensystem mit. Allein 140.000.000 € der Dividende wandern damit sofort aus unserer Volkswirtschaft ab. Das Geld geht nicht über Los, fließt nicht in den lokalen Konsum und generiert hier exakt null weitere Wertschöpfung.
Ein absolut fehlerfreies System... wenn das primäre Ziel ist, Vermögen systematisch von unten nach oben und außer Landes zu pumpen.

Eliminated the IPv4 NAT for my blog today and gave the Caddy jail it's own dedicated IPv4 address from my /28 space.
Makes the firewall configuration a lot simpler and I can drop all that rdr/nat stuff.. Modern IPv6 of course, always was a routed end-to-end connection.
It's time that we finally leave that legacy IP crap behind at some point .. le sigh.

If you open a trains detail view, then you see it‘s journeys history and see how punctual it was at the previous stops. That’s open more reliable than the LCD screens on the station. Like this here (I use it all the time)

Remember when em-dashes were just punctuation?
Now they’re slop-watermarks.
You can’t read anything online anymore without seeing them lined up like little forensic clues:
“Here’s the thing—”
“Let me explain—”
“The future is—”
The em-dash used to mean:
“Ah, a stylish writer.”
Now it means:
“This paragraph was assembled in 0.8 seconds by a stochastic parrot that thinks every sentence needs the cadence of a TED Talk delivered during a hostage situation.”
We’ve reached the phase of the internet where punctuation itself has become a tell. Like digital fingerprints left at the scene of a content crime.
Soon literary critics are gonna write:
“Early 2020s prose is characterized by emotional support em-dashes, vacant aphorisms, and the overwhelming sensation that the author has a podcast microphone somewhere nearby.”
The em-dash died for AI’s sins.

The case for running Arch, Ubuntu, and a real RHEL userspace as long-lived containers on a Fedora laptop. Home directory mounted in, GUI apps integrated, VSCode treats the box as a remote target.
Bonus: on a Fedora host registered with subscription-manager, RHEL entitlements propagate into UBI containers automatically via Podman's default mounts.conf. No flags, no manual bind mounts.

- Mannheim -> Nürnberg -> München schlägt die direkte Stuttgart-Route fast immer.

Wurde er für Neu-Installationen. Wird bei Updates aber nicht automatisch umgestellt (SDDM ist weiterhin unterstützt). Der neue plasma-login-manager kann aber via DNF nachinstalliert werden.

I’ve been running the prerelease/beta since mid-February, and it’s been rock solid 🙂
Highlights:
- GNOME 50 on Workstation
- KDE Plasma 6.6 + Plasma Login Manager
- PackageKit now backed by DNF5
- NTSYNC enabled for better Wine/Steam performance
- MariaDB 11.8 by default
- LLVM 22 + GCC 16.1 toolchain updates
- Nix package tool added
KDE KMail still segfaults for me when interacting with GPG, but that’s literally the only issue I’ve encountered in 2.5 months of usage.

On low display brightness (30% is totally enough for the panel with indoor use), it's comfortable 5hrs ... Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less..
Gaming (Factorio, Oxygen not included) drains it a lot quicker than HW-Accelerated video-playback on Youtube 🙂

A year and a halfago, I would not have suggested it (bad bad power management situation). But since Linux 6.17 and especially 6.18, all the quirks are fixed and even with the power hungty 2,8K OLED panel, it now holds very long and the amd_pstate driver for that model made HUGE improvements in the past versions.
Now, with current Linux, it's pretty much my sweet spot!

A direct BGP session with Hetzner on FogIXP, a fourth FreeBSD edge in Zürich, and a MikroTik at home speaking iBGP into the /48 - so my home LAN now has provider-independent IPv6 and exits AS201379 like any other site.
Plus a two-condition route-map that steers DTAG-bound traffic over Vultr.

Funny deadlock situation... I’ve reached peak security on my remote MikroTik Router (AS201379).
By "peak security," I mean I’ve successfully locked everyone out - including myself. SSH, WWW, and WinBox are dark. Even the Hypervisor management is trapped behind the router's new, very effective, accidental firewall rules.
The data plane is running perfectly, which is the ultimate taunt. See you tomorrow for the 80-mile "Serial Cable Walk of Shame" to the datacenter.
This is a brutal reminder that the "Safe Mode" button in WinBox isn't just a feature. It’s a lifeline.

A FreeBSD jail should be small. Installing Python into every jail just so your config management can run is the tail wagging the dog.
I wrote two tiny wrappers to plug cdist directly into jexec on the host.
The result? Full configuration management that asks for nothing but POSIX sh inside the jail itself. Zero daemons. Zero agents.

Had my fair share of "Deutsche Bahn joy" on the return from Brussels yesterday.
The first train from Bruxelles Midi to Köln Hbf was alle fine. On point.
Then we heard via loudspeakers, that the tracks between Cologne and Frankfurt are completely blocked because of an accident.
We then took an alternative route - an IC train from Cologne via Bonn, Koblenz and Mainz to Mannheim. Beautiful scenery alongside the Rhine river. But also very very slow in comparisson to the direct ICE train... But we got home. With around two hours of delay...

Tasting 10 different Belgian beers at the „Delirium Cafe“ in Brussels. Very different from each other, some a bit too strong for my taste, others very tasty. Was a lovely evening, right after visiting the European Parliament. Later had some proper Belgian fries to round it up.

My ThinkPad T14s shipped with an Intel XMM7560 LTE modem locked behind a Lenovo unlock blob. I replaced it with a ~100-line bash script that does the exact same handshake - and explains, in plain shell, what the "unlock" really is: a SHA-256 over a 4-byte constant. No magic, no blob.

mhh. even weirder. In an iPhone 15 Pro, the same SIM gets working IPv6 .. In the Thinkpad, it's IPv4-only (while the same sime in the same laptop gets v6 in other countries ... ) Mobile networks are weird!

Haven't tiried anything but the default setting that NetworkManager on Linux uses. But with those same settings, it worked in Austria, France, Denmark, Swden, Croatia and Spain .. Just here in Belgium, I end up with just CGNat via IPv4

I have an LTE Modem in my ThinkPad Laptop. I was in Crotatia last month and there, IPv6 was working perfectly (I got a German Telefonica IP). Just here in Belgium it doesn't.

The Hotel WiFi here is even better .. It worked until roughly 7:30PM .. since that the throughput is < 200kbps and every ~60s there's a moment of 60-70% packet loss .. At lest mobile connection works reliably 😆

It's super weird:
German Telefonica: Has IPv6
Belgian Orange: Has IPv6
German Telefonica user roaming in Orange BE: No IPv6 ... 🤷‍♂️
But I can dial into my home router via Wireguard to get modern connectivity. I just don't understand, why that's such a problem when roaming between two networks, that essentially both have IPv6 for their own users..

The secrets (by default) are stored in json files under /var/lib/containers/storage/secrets .. Only protected by the file-system permissions. If you want them to be encrypted at rest, you could use something like OpenBao (OSS fork of Hashicorp Vault)

Yeah .. But Podman uses Jail syscalls on the kernel to isolate the process tree and those aren't allowed from within jails for security purposes .. I haven't tried it recently, but you'll likely seeing a "Operation not permitted" error, because the FreeBSD Kernel won't let the syscalls through.

Running Podman on FreeBSD? It’s a totally different beast than Linux. :freebsd:
I just published a follow-up to my previous Podman deep dive, going into the FreeBSD operational model for OCI containers. No systemd, no Quadlets, and no rootless mode, but you get native ZFS storage drivers, rc.d service integration, and the Linuxulator.
