There’s a full page ad on the back of our community newspaper from the Ontario government showing a rugged construction working grinding a steel beam that says:
“A SAFER ONTARIO MEANS BUILDING MORE JAILS”
Typical Conservative government thinking that being safer means locking up criminals AFTER a crime is committed rather than spending a similar amount of money on programs that will prevent crimes from happening in the first place.
$3 billion (plus however many millions are being spent on advertising their jail construction) might go a long way towards getting people out of poverty and despair.

A bunch of oil companies set up the Pathways Alliance which claims that they can get CCS working to a level where at least enough CO₂ produced during the production of oil will be captured resulting in net zero emissions.
Unfortunately that does nothing about the emissions from when the oil produced is burned.
The Pathways propaganda page is full of optimism. However, it also acknowledges that “[t]he Project proceeding is contingent upon obtaining sufficient fiscal and policy supports and regulatory approvals.”
They’ve got to convince the First Nations to agree to the Cold Lake area CO₂ storage. One significant hurdle of many.

So what’s the solution? Over regulation appears to be a non-starter.
To date Carney’s pipeline proposal requires the oil companies to provide the financing to build it plus a working carbon capture process, the latter which will get tax credits. So the corporations and oligarchs are ‘in charge’ of the construction but are they willing to put up the capital and wait for the agreements with BC and the Indigenous? The price of oil by then is likely to make it a losing proposition.
The economist is letting the market decide instead of the government.

I can appreciate the reason without accepting the result.
I can also appreciate that Carney is in a tough situation. Trudeau tried to do “the right thing” with regard to the environment which resulted in bad polls and the prospect of a Poilievre majority government. A majority of Canadians took a short term view and saw the economy as the most important thing and the environment as a much lower priority.
As bad as the moves towards accommodating the fossil fuel industry are, I can’t help but think they’d be much worse under Polievre. I’d rather have an economist with a doctorate in charge of managing that than a accommodating right wing career politician.

In 1999 the Conservative government in Ontario, Canada, passed an ‘Ontario Works’ law that had a provision for workfare “as a last resort.”
A professor of Social Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton did a study on the results.
The abstract states:
“This article asks particularly how the work of workfare and the complex and costly workfare infrastructure is justified in the face of its failure to lead to employment.

In addition … an argument is developed that the normative justification for workfare is based not on the effectiveness of workfare programmes, but on the belief that clients need to exchange their work for welfare and self‐improvement so that they appear ‘employment ready’ even if not employed.”
A Universal Basic Income would be easier to implement and studies on pilots have shown it can be effective at getting people off welfare.

Parks Canada has released a video on the importance of peatlands (and it just happens to include a shot of my daughter collecting peat samples for study).
In the rush to mine critical minerals in the Ring of Fire, that activity can potentially release a lot of carbon that has been stored for thousands of years. Hopefully the scientists, like my daughter, will be listened to in order to minimise the potential damage.

I understand that.
But isn’t it better to ensure the wealthy are paying the taxes they owe on their annual earnings rather than trying to collect — at a cost that is higher than what is collected — on the occasional yacht and/or airplane?
The day the wealthy can claim a tax deduction on those purchases is the day to revolt. Meanwhile focus on making them pay their fair share of taxes on earnings like the rest of us.

Speaking of job commitments, the Alberta Local Authorities Election Act allows for three consecutive hours paid time off to vote if the hours of work don’t permit three free consecutive hours during the time polling stations are open. That Act may have to be amended for a longer time to be paid if the UCP intends on keeping the voter registration policy in place.

Note that the Digital Services Tax Act has not been repealed so it’s possible it can be put back into place to collect the retroactive taxes plus any current ones not collected since it was rescinded June 29th.
The government website says “If legislation is tabled in Parliament and receives Royal Assent, those who have already paid will have their payments returned to them.”

When the federal government cuts taxes they offload some services to the provincial governments who are also cutting taxes so they offload services to the municipalities who, by law, can’t run deficits so they cut services and still have to raise taxes.
In the end it’s the taxpayers that lose.

There was an upstairs room at 24 Sussex Drive set aside for some cats to live in while waiting to be adopted, according to a Macleans article in 2014:

I find it odd, given his length of service in the House of Commons and the positions he had in the Harper Government™ and in Opposition under Scheer that he’s been shut out of roles since O’Toole was leader, and his referenda have stopped since Poilievre became leader.
Is he being punished for voting in Parliament as his constituents indicate instead of how the Conservative Party directs?
Unfortunately this is what politics has evolved into. The Whips control the votes too often.

I live in the federal riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston where Conservative MP Scott Reid has represented it since 2000. When we moved here in 2017, every now and then a pamphlet from him would be in our mailbox. He held constituency referenda to guide him how to vote on certain bills in Parliament.
The last referendum he had was on conversion therapy where he voted in favour of the government bill banning it in 2021.
