Last Notes npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Fifty three years ago I started the day as a child and ended it as a mom. This was the first photo of me and my daughter. We both still had our hospital bracelet on. The hospital where she delivered never even gave me a room. I was left in a hallway and discharged about eight hours after I arrived. As an unwed mother I didn't warrant a red carpet welcome. I paid them $250 and went home to the room I rented in an old Victorian house. Obviously there were holes in the wallpaper but we were warm and safe and we were living within our means. I was fourteen years old and ninety eight pounds. I'm sharing my story because it shows all good things are possible. My daughter turned into the best kind of human. It wasn't easy but I have zero regrets. True grit was never personified by John Wayne types but by regular people surviving against the odds. Disappointing the doubters was sweet consolation. She gave me the gift of grandkids too. I've had a good life. So far. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/170/980/624/758/620/original/d9493b685e416140.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 The air attack is still circling but they have engines and a helicopter now. It looks like they've knocked it down. There is less smoke. Whew. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We heard the sirens. Then we saw the smoke. Airplane noises were next. Flying these fire fighting tankers was my husband's profession for many years. Not the sight you want to see a stone's throw down the hill. I hope it's only vegetarian and no one's home. The tanker dropped once and the air attack plane is still circling. It is a warm windy day. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/164/036/088/605/156/original/e14c48602d6ff1ac.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/164/036/123/171/324/original/fa280d8e20273f7b.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/164/036/154/581/159/original/b55829fb888065fc.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I don't always make the right choices. Try as I do sometimes things don't feel right. I picked the wrong colors for this towel. Since it doesn't feel right I'm going to see if I can pick the pink stitches out and find a color that fits. Somehow I feel out of sorts in general. The season is changing. Life at our house is adjusting to a better normal. I have less on my plate but hesitate to commit to anything because circumstances could change in an instant. A life time of navigating a changing landscape should help me now. I just need a minute to decide what's next. I'll figure it out. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/147/080/201/497/713/original/9595926dd1d540fa.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 So if I start getting all amazed by our dahlia's I get over it when I visit my daughter's dahlia extravaganza. I am humbled pretty quickly. These photos are from this morning when we met at her house to share a ride to the farmer's market. #BloomScrolling #Dahlias https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/141/191/973/931/991/original/f527219092ca7d93.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/141/191/947/898/462/original/a0cffc3a060c94dc.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/141/191/972/056/289/original/c902296a31d61e23.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Sure! If you save me a few I'll trade for you book. Maybe tomorrow or Thursday? npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer hops in the car and says I'm not as muddy as I look. I don't believe it. It's ok. Everything is washable. Even Summer. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/117/624/425/874/865/original/eed52c5bb97bd87f.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Strange day today. I slept in. Usually I am awake and making coffee by 6. I didn't wake up until 8:30. Summer and her pal had been tiptoeing around for hours. My husband said that he kept sending Summer upstairs to make sure I was ok. Unfortunately I was supposed to meet my daughter at Costco at 9. I thew some clothes on, grabbed my list, and ran out the door. I got there just in time. For some reason today feels like someone let the air out of me. I am tired. So I'm giving myself the day off. Sometimes I'm reminded that I'm almost seventy. Today is one of those days. Summer says she'll take care of her pal. Not to worry. I hope they stay out of trouble. Good morning, Mastodon. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Life is settled some for us now that everything around the house that was broken is fixed. Now we find our equilibrium again and look forward to enjoying our favorite time of year. Quiet with no banging, clanging, coming and going of workers. As much as we appreciated the end results all of us are more relaxed now. My husband has recovered much of his strength after his recent health scare. He is almost perky. The support of the Mastodon community through our version of thick and thin has been a lifeline. I share our best and worst of times. You respond with encouragement, advice and genuine compassion. We love you all. Summer and I sat on the stairs of our new deck to watch the sunset. Actually I sat on the stairs and Summer sat on me. The best possible way to end today and look forward to tomorrow. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/103/468/585/706/017/original/2b5cceb43bde460c.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I've been awake since 3:30 am. Wondering if our well would recover enough water overnight was stressful. Usually I assume the best but I know that several wells around us are dry or nearly so. I just wasn't sure so I was thinking through the best way to put a new more accessible water storage tank near our driveway. Just in case. This filtration and upgrade to our well set up has been an unexpected expense so I was thinking that through too. So this morning before the plumbers arrived the grandkids picked Summer up for a beach adventure and I waited. Finally they confirmed that our storage tank filled with filtered clean water over night. What a relief! We still had to flush all the lines to and through the house. Lots of air in the lines but we are up and running now with clear clean water. Hot and cold. Now the cleaning and disinfecting can commence. I did a happy dance in the drizzle in the middle of our fields. Tired but happy. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 One more night without running water. Take out pizza for dinner. Our well is recovering slowly. Going to bed early with high hopes that our well and holding tanks are back to useable levels of filtered water by morning. We were able to meet via video with my husband's doctor today. He is concerned that we are stressed by the public health nurse on our case. His focus like ours is the best of care for his patient so we need to do what we need to do to make that happen. Tomorrow I will find time to drive to the VA to pick up antibiotics for the next five days. The medicine and clean water are both positive happenings. We are lucky to have caring providers. Wish us luck in our quest for hot showers on the morn. Good night Mastodon friends. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer is determined to find some fun on this drizzly early morning. I explained that with no running water I can't really take her on an outside adventure. All of our adventure options require a shower or at least a spirited washing afterwards. When she asked for some playtime on the stairs I just couldn't deny her. I have found myself defending her presence in our household the past two weeks. I am positive that she isn't causing any of our current issues with bacteria. She is super healthy, we are careful about keeping her from licking her pal and she is kept as clean as is possible. She isn't going anywhere. So anyone who thinks otherwise is barking up the wrong tree. My daughter has decided to intervene for us with the health department staff to explain that we keep a clean and orderly environment at our house. I expect when our water is clean we will fall of everyone's radar again. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/088/788/135/475/572/original/1638cb6c40cb9f2a.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I am happy to report that my husband is feeling better every day. A steady diet of milkshakes, cookies and pies are putting some pounds back on him. Today he jumped in to help me make coffee. I was struggling to open the giant water bottle so he flexed his muscles and unscrewed the lid with one hand even. Since he was already in position he lifted the heavy container to fill the coffee maker right to the line. I do believe the coffee tastes better because we made it together. Summer even got a little massage while he sat in his chair. Soon he will be off to see one of his many doctors. Today our well work starts. I am trying to avoid thinking about what could go wrong and look forward to clean water on tap again. Summer says good morning Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/077/559/429/928/311/original/d9f013b1c49ab564.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/077/559/427/503/693/original/a28ddd9256c24127.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 This morning didn't quite work out as planned. Summer and I overslept and were late getting down the road to our trail. When we finally arrived it was gated with a huge red closed sign. Bummer. So we headed down the hill to the bay. There is still a month to wait for our favorite beach to open back up for off leash dog traffic. Clearly everyone is not concerned about the Marbled murlette nesting because the person with the unruly German shepherd dogs was terrizing a whole stretch of beach. I told Summer to get back in the car and we motored on to a less populated spot on Humboldt Bay. She says her only requirement for an adventure is that we are outside. The trail we found met her criteria. She even found a puddle to romp in. I guess our adventure turned out fine after all. Happy dog for sure. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/072/175/540/291/142/original/23d8cdfe9d21c745.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/072/175/466/189/621/original/4d75274df581fbc2.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/072/175/526/164/204/original/423f922a67ec77dc.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I don't have any new embroidery projects in the works right now. I was curious though if I missed anyone who asked me for an embroidered towel. I would feel badly if a contact got lost in the shuffle. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with our timeline. Please let me know if you asked me for a towel and I dropped the ball. I still have a few blank towels and lots of thread. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 When I first signed up for Mastodon it was scary. Posting our life's happenings meant giving up any pretence of maintaining any level of privacy. I can remember at the beginning of social media, before Facebook, interactions seemed low risk and high reward. Now it's opposite. It didn't take long. Overcoming the fear of bad things to truly connect with this community has restored some of my faith in fellow humans. On Mastodon I've participated in a live stream, mailed embroidered towels, thereby giving up my address, and even connected with some locals in real life. Because of my husband's health issues we were isolated even before Covid. Being in close proximity to real people can't be a thing for us. This community is literally the next best thing. Maybe better because our circle is vast here compared to what our small rural community would offer. For all your kindness we appreciate each and every one of you. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/067/714/229/356/559/original/57bdd51b85eec739.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We haven't had much time to toot this weekend. Working hard to stock up water. Cleaning everything. Boiling water to wash dishes and people, not to mention dogs, is a pain in the behind. Still I'm happy to be closer to putting this bump in the road behind us. Summer and I sat down for our morning break to take care of our contribution to international relations. Obviously our government is really bad at international relations so we are stepping up. This newest embroidered towel will be mailed off to Canada tomorrow. Two more will be heading overseas soon. It's not much but the best we can do. Good morning Mastodon. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/066/258/497/668/324/original/deb240f1e10d8637.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/066/258/539/369/706/original/54e218b1ea12efcb.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 My daughter volunteered at a rescue. We ended up with two rabbits, two cats and a lizard. She still loves animals. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I haven't figured out what to do about landscaping around our deck but for now I'm happy that it is useful and safe. We can sit without getting blown away by the strong winds that were frequently an issue with the old structure. This feels like more of a porch than a deck I think. I don't miss the other 600 sq. ft. because we didn't use it anyway. I am happy we hadn't closed space underneath in because that is were our water filtration system will live. Summer loves the deck and I've already given up on the doggie footprints. I will have to buy a good door mat for the deck door. No tripping hazards and no splinters. Yay! So much to be happy about. There are still kind people who help their neighbors. Thank goodness. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/057/224/635/244/680/original/75e2b98918cd773b.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/057/224/677/998/281/original/dd85b4974fe187ce.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I don't know. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I did take a few no Summer photos this morning. The weather was a combination of fog and drizzle so the lighting was not very light. We took the path less traveled to check out the dune flowers. #BloomScrolling https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/056/657/713/993/364/original/a1ef04111c58eb41.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/056/657/656/075/140/original/b3a053bc7328b617.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/056/657/710/801/017/original/d946ca6610fd7d96.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 For years and years I had our water tested for anything that might be harmful. I am aware there are risks to using well water. I never had a test come back negative not even slightly sketchy. When my husband was recently hospitalized I was baffled how he came in contact with bad bacteria. He is very sheltered and I am exceptionally careful. So to put my worries to rest I bought a comprehensive, expensive analysis of our water by a local lab. The results were presented yesterday. Our water is contaminated and very risky to an immune compromised person. So I am finishing a towel for a Mastodon friend while I wait for the well fixer people. Luckily a treatment and filter remedy is available. So we are boiling water until the fix and I am thankful I had the presence of mind to test. It's always something, right? https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/050/592/676/243/503/original/5a4748da7a08f733.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 She would probably be a better driver than many of the humans on the road. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer woke up a happy dog. Her pal slept all night so we all slept all night. She wakes him up by giving him a soft pat with her paw. I let them cuddle for a few minutes before I told Summer we were headed to the beach. But first we perked the coffee and took the garbage bin out to the road. The fog is thick and the neighborhood isn't awake yet as we drive off on our adventure. As usual we have the trail to ourselves. I wanted to get some wildflower photos but they were all closed up waiting for the sun. Much needed exercise for both of us. I asked Summer what she wanted to write in the sand. She wanted to send hugs to everyone who could use one on this early Wednesday morning. Good morning and hugs from Summer Mastodon friends. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/043/670/403/712/130/original/f1b47324675284d9.mp4 npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We still need to close in the bottom, add rails and sides. It should be finished tomorrow and then we clean up. They are taking all of the old deck away. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/039/723/942/130/868/original/06a45d34346e6db4.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer is a hard working dog. We set everything up last night so we could get out the door in record time. We were driving before the official sunrise. I knew we had to get there and get back. My husband has really bounced back and slept all night so everyone was feeling good. The sky was overcast and it felt like the world was still asleep. Summer was excited as was Grandma. I decided to crawl around on the floor to take her picture. Big mistake. Instead of posing or just looking adorable for the photo she dove in to lick my face. She has no self control when one of her humans gets to close. She sees such a maneuver as an open invitation. She is so sweet and brings the joy to our house every single day. All are retired and want to help us get our new deck up. A truckload of materials arrived this morning as well as extra old dudes. The original brothers called in more brothers. There are 12 siblings all together. The decking will be installed today with the rails and stairs next week. My husband is touched by their kindness in finishing his unfinished project. He truly doesn't know how to thank them. In the crowd is a fellow Vietnam veteran who is a bladder cancer survivor too. He can commiserate with my husband, his old friend, in a way most of us can't. Summer is keeping an eye on them. The day before I was pushing to get so many chores done I logged 20K steps. I was seriously tired. Yesterday morning started out with a grandson dogsitter coming out so my husband and I could go to a doctor appointment together. The deck bros needed for me to choose deck railing and stairs choices and I had to face my deferred housework. It felt like a lot all at once. The doctor was clear that if my husband gets as sick as he did last week I should drive him to San Francisco. He says there are no providers, here in Humboldt, who know enough about the medical challenges we face. He says they can't make informed decisions even if they mean well. He said that he is impressed at how we manage four different health care systems as well as we do. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the right person for this job. Today is already better. Good morning Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/009/770/053/594/022/original/547ca2e9f966e401.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 All of our lower fields are mowed. As dry as our weather is I'm glad to keep them short. Our middle grandson showed up early to share a bowl of yogurt, fresh fruit and granola with me for lunch before he launched into the marathon mowing of acres project. He is such good company. Summer loves him to pieces. We do too. I gave him some money. He protested that we have done so much for him already and we shouldn't pay him. I explained for the gazillionth time that if I am keeping him from his regular work I will compensate him. I know all the kids would help us no matter what but if they could humor me in this way I would be thankful. When he finished and had stowed the riding mower he found this surprise of a homemade chocolate milkshake with a scoop of mint chip and whipped cream on top. He has a beautiful smile. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/000/331/585/262/492/original/a647ba889e72ddca.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Awe. Summer and I were awake at first light. I wanted to get her walk in early. She was excited because she knows something fun is in the works. When I opened our front door to let her out she took off like a rocket. Summer has wheels. It turned out that some deer were pulling the netting off of our roses. Summer wasn't having it because this is her front acre after all. I yelled at her at the top of my voice because I didn't want either Summer or the deer to get hurt. The deer decided that even the prospect of tasty roses wasn't worth Summer's ire. It all worked out. They moved on to the neighbor's garden. Clearly I can scream my guts out and no one but Summer is coming to my rescue. Good to know. We finally made it to the beach. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/998/344/070/615/401/original/f25dea89ad34403b.mp4 npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 The majority of our meals are foods that I prepare are made from scratch. I will reconsider my yogurt. I did pick this one because I like the flavor and texture. I avoid artificial sweetness and added salt but premium ice cream is my weakness. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I hadn't heard about that and will check it out. Thanks! npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Thanks I will look for it. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 It was spicy but not hot. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We have decided to sick with those two options for now. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I buy the kirkland brand. I will look at the label. It separates and has to be stirred but I will check on the additives. I am watching my cholesterol so I buy nonfat. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 When we met with my husband's surgeon last week he offered a couple of suggestions to help my husband's body recover from massive doses of antibiotics. He asked me to buy a container of Kimchi from Costco and to serve him a fork full once in the morning and once at night. This is a new food group for us. This morning we opened the container. Yikes. I said it can't be that bad. He said ok. You first. The things I do for love. Once. It must be an acquired taste. He and Summer sat outside while I opened the windows. I guess we need to ask if there are alternative digestive aides that might be more palatable for us. Double yikes. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 More Summer Humboldt Bay adventure. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/862/337/093/823/original/d239f002615370ac.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/862/286/568/831/original/ac6b918ddd6feb64.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/862/331/762/161/original/e30952bf3aaebefa.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Some nights I sleep better than others. Last night I worried instead of sleeping. I know better but it's best to let my brain consider all of the possibilities and then move on again. Since sleep wasn't happening I jumped up at first light to get Summer out for a much needed run. All of our favorite spots were full of people who looked like they were camping. None of these places allow overnight so there's that. We moseyed down the hill to our trail of last resort on Humboldt Bay. This trail is for hunters to access the bay but is deserted in the off season. The tide was out so Summer stayed on the shore and out of the standing water. She was a good girl and fun was had. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/843/423/634/023/original/de18739317fea5fd.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/843/422/993/801/original/69f600c9afbba56e.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/992/843/427/492/574/original/ddd1f5c272a7d79e.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I miss our deck. Summer does too. We all do. The deck bros will be here on Wednesday to build more of the new structure. I dug out the concrete blocks that the old deck was anchored to so they can be moved to hold up the newer version. One more chore off the list. The sunset was lovely even though we watched from the doorway. Today was a good start for our week. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/990/352/391/045/332/original/653351836a08fa35.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I'm not the only one without a dishwasher! npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 In between lounging and watching a movie with Summer and her pal I baked banana walnut bread mostly for the freezer. I served warm bread with salted butter and raspberry jam for a snack. My husband has gained four pounds now. She promised that she would do most of the work. How could I refuse. Watering got done. Some wire on the gate had come loose and was hazardous so I tried to fix it with zip ties. Didn't hold so I used string. It looks funky but it works for now. We planted a new fushia. Unplanted spent green bean plants to make way for new lettuce and we thinned out the baby apples. Summer did all the fetching and hauling. I let her keep the pots for now so she has a collection to show her pal. Summer is a very smart dog who always gets her flower pot. Even when it hides. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/988/649/759/707/747/original/d3cfebcf3e71098e.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/988/649/766/120/286/original/59ac19a27a6820a4.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/988/649/793/705/543/original/44dbdb104739a376.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 He was in Portland at General Electric. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer claimed the cresty edge. The birds aren't too bad but the deer destroy the whole bush. The only critter that outsmarted me was a skunk that crawled under the netting to eat the low hanging fruit. We only have three large and three small bushes. I love eating out of the garden. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 First batch of blueberry goodness is out of the oven. Lemon blueberry loaves were next in line. Only a pie to go and the whole gallon of our blueberries will be cooked into something sweet. The berries I pick today will be for snacking. This cobbler will be dessert for my daughter's house tonight. My mother would have been proud that I haven't wasted any our our homegrown bounty this year. Not that she baked a lot but she made sure that I did. #Baking https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/982/433/601/573/803/original/5c1edd463fbb2031.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer and I are trying to help her pal find his appetite. Lost temporarily while he was sick and in the hospital. So if he says something sounds good it might miraculously appear. He calls these plain muffins. They are blueberry muffins without the blueberries. Small and a perfect compliment to our very freshly cooked raspberry jam. The same exact berries he helped to harvest from our very own berry patch. We are rewarded for our efforts with a jam that tastes like real fruit and better than store bought. That's a fact. There is something special about eating food that you grew from scratch. He started out with two muffins and came back for seconds. We are making slow but steady progress towards getting him back to fighting weight. #Baking https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/981/639/119/380/671/original/652e091e0057c38a.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 More of Summer playing on the stairs because she is too cute. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/981/368/960/103/387/original/b0d06a92f8b9fcd1.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/981/369/030/310/473/original/f62b305e6c13715e.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/981/368/970/848/412/original/959e794d3b6a700b.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We all slept in this morning. We cleaned up the lawn mower after yesterday's marathon mowing adventure. Breaking down cardboard was up next. Summer says this is good news. She is embarrassed by the stack of boxes when the deck workers are here. What she really means is that she loves tearing up cardboard because that is the only time she is allowed to tear up anything. The thrill! I will drop the boxes off when I pick up mail. Summer says the car is toasty so she's staying home this time. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/638/489/924/743/original/b3d4186d14ad529c.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/638/521/577/493/original/637ed6f780f09d14.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/638/549/745/081/original/bce515a6c844f359.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I did this every summer when I was still working and I loved it. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 When I took up residence here on this rural hillside there was no garden. Few flowers and lots of Himalaya blackberry bushes. Because I know those brambles burn like gasoline I set about reclaiming the space around the house. My husband didn't know yet that putting in flowers and a vegetable garden would bring him so much joy. He has never gotten tired of harvesting food to eat the same day or scouting out the newest dahlia blossom. One of our potato patches was ready to dig up right about when he got stuck in the hospital. Harvesting potatoes is his favorite so I told him that I would wait for him. We decided on this morning before it gets too warm and he gets too fatigued. Very exciting. Summer brought his knee pad. He showed me every big red potato and declared one the biggest yet. Summer and I soak up his pure unadulterated happiness. Life is good in this moment. Now we rest. #Gardening https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/248/634/696/350/original/2fbde475c83d2b43.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/248/556/397/375/original/5eda847bb9cbf9af.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/976/248/559/522/715/original/1dc5713261cf7f93.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 A few more Summer morning adventure photos. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/975/811/254/551/137/original/b046876f3e92ad64.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/975/811/218/101/565/original/33f3444bfc610b3a.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/975/811/265/734/196/original/b8dbd4aafaa46a37.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Yesterday there was a wildfire close to the trail Summer and I walk to the beach. It made for an interesting sunset sky. The wind spared us but we heard from friends inundated with smoke. It seems that sometimes we are spared from discomfort like smoky skies and sometimes it's our turn to be inconvenienced. That seems to holding true for everything. Today we met with my husband's surgeon and talked for a long time. He is very kind and compassionate. I asked him to be clear about where we stand. We will be checking back in a month but no surgery for now. We are to work on gaining some strength and a few pounds. There is no easy fix it seems. So we ponder what we heard and we carry on. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/972/656/668/173/703/original/748e93e708bfcb43.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Something to be thankful for. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer keeps trying to convince me that she is providing a service. If I ever need a sock she knows where to find one or two. She likes to hoard socks. Clean or dirty, short or tall, no matter the color or fabric. They don't even need to be lost. She has never chewed one. They all come back to me in the same condition they left. No matter how many times I tell her that the socks are mine it doesn't even slow her down. Somehow she finds comfort from this exercise. I don't understand but believe her when she says that she just wants to be close to something that's been close to her humans and socks are the easiest thing to cart off. We have grass to cut back this morning. Her pal wants to wander around outside and needs to see the landscape ahead of him so he doesn't fall. I am even struggling a little on the slopes. The sun is less sunny today. Perfect for working outside. Learning to navigate social media here has been a blessing. We are lucky to have found this community. I do believe Mastodon breaks through the noise that tries to sell the notion that we are all too different to find the common yearning to be a friend and have a friend. He is too fragile for surgery immediately. I need to help him find at least ten of the pounds he lost and stabilize his digestive system. We are working on it. The good news is that he slept through the night last night. He is getting good rest at home. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer knows just what to do. After her pal finished a chocolatey milkshake Summer decided to move in for a hug. A Summer hug is even better than chocolate so I hear from a reliable source. Hopefully we enjoy a quiet and relaxing rest of the evening. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/961/554/118/352/613/original/1a8d0a1314c5fc09.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Even on a challenging day the sky brings me a feeling of peace. The blue was different in a special way. A few minutes looking up was just what Summer ordered. We are ready for the next round. My husband seems delicate. Not diminished but fragile. At least he is home and can sit outside in the shade. Fresh air is all good. Now I need to convince him that Ensure or Boost will taste better than he thinks. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/961/309/122/899/592/original/c8ad816c38c7e3c5.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I remember the first time I saw a glass elevator. It was one of my first work trips to San Francisco. Even though I am uncomfortable with heights to the point it is hard to look up at high buildings I really wanted to ride that elevator to the top. Convinced that the view from the top would be worth the queasy. The same with ski lifts, high mountain trails and flying in a small aircraft. My point is that the last week feels like the sky high ups and downs of dealing with the scary and uncomfortable for a purpose. I sometimes feel way outside of my comfort zone navigating all of the major decisions for the three of us. What if I get something wrong? What if I'm not advocating hard enough? I have to keep trying because that's all I can do. Just like I kept trying to grow the hugest dahlia. I persisted and was reminded I can do big things even if I haven't done them before. Deadheaded this morning I was sad to see goodbye to this beautiful colossal flower. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/947/253/326/102/892/original/7e54f4d56a35d897.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer got a few cuddles before we took her pal to the emergency room. He will be hydrated and stabilized here before we head out of town for a major upgrade. She rotated through three different grandkid dogsitters today. The good news is that they did some of my deferred housework while I was otherwise occupied. She is sad but I reminded her that her pal will feel better when we get him back. Sadly they won't allow her to visit because she isn't a service dog. I offered to show her comforter in chief badge but it didn't convince them to bend the rules. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/926/438/764/959/622/original/9016f80b8848ee37.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 It was time to cook Summer's breakfast so I left her in charge of her pal. Next think I know there are strange sounds coming from the recliner. Summer decided to lighten the mood. Joke time. She told him an oldie but a goodie. Knock, knock Who's there? Ooze Ooze who? Ooze a good girl? She got him to laugh out loud. Leave it to Summer to start the day out with a smile. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/924/744/128/971/983/original/50e8e37f7a60d3e3.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Last update for today. The ER doctor we talked to was very concerned that my husband would need surgery that was too complicated for our small rural hospital. We agreed that I would send all of the test results and his opinion to my husband's surgeon at Stanford ASAP. I also agreed to bring him right back to the hospital for additional hydration if he can't keep fluids in his system. We also decided that I could care for him at home if he didn't need IV fluids again until tomorrow. We will all rest better safe at home with Summer. She was so happy to see us. I cooked her a late night supper which she wolfed down. Thank you for adopting us into this ever so special community. Support systems or lack of are deal breakers when things get dicey. We feel very supported. Thank you again. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 All the good wishes, prayers, healing vibes and heart emoji thingys are working! Lab tests were good enough to get a CT scan with contrast. No sign of infection!! More and more IV fluid is planned to try and motivate his kidneys to do their thing. His diagnosis is severe dehydration. I think he is going to have to spend the night at least. I keep telling the staff he is still very sharp mentally but just very sick. He couldn't remember his birthday so they are skeptical. We are so tired I'm not sure I remember my birthday either. Summer is still doing great except she won't eat. I said not to worry that she will be fine. I will feed her when I get home no matter what time it is. We are finally getting somewhere. You are just the best virtual support system in the universe. We thank you. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Update My husband refused the ambulance the VA wanted to send to fetch him so I drove him to the emergency room. The waiting room is crowded. We are the only mask wearers. After three hours of waiting we finally got a bed. Life saving fluids are on the menu. Now we wait for a scan and test results. He is feeling perkier already. Summer is with her favorite dog sitter. Thank you for all the well wishes. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer and have the same look of concern today. As much as we would like to get back to our regular schedule and actually know what the next hour might bring. Well. That isn't our reality right now. As soon as we have a glimmer of good news we will share. For now we hope something breaks our way. If we are quiet. That's the reason. Love you all. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/913/380/839/804/763/original/1eb5f6d6a2eb2fb1.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 #SilentSunday https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/908/299/558/772/688/original/af1f6bc0bc080734.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Summer and I are still looking for a spot to relax and watch the sunset at the end of the day. I might set some chairs up on her front acre so we can see the ocean over the top of the fence. Summer likes to meditate while I blather on about why I love her, her pal and expound on our good fortune in being in this very moment. Today I thought about all the times my husband's competence, skills, good sense and survival instincts have kept us safe. Now it's my turn to help him feel safe and loved. Over the years we have each occasionally needed help. Taking turns at bring home the bacon. Being the one to comfort or be comforted. I'm happy to be comforter in chief for now. Summer says "wait just a minute that's my job?" Right she is. Again. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/905/354/493/147/194/original/ce935e14a779ed65.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I took Summer out to inspect her property early this morning. She walks the line and looks for any sign of incursions. Thankfully our MAGA neighbors are staying on their side of the fence. Summer has zero tolerance for intolerance so she keeps an eye on them. She is a good girl. Since we are staying home again this morning we thought that some spirited Frisbee chasing would wake us up. My husband's health continues to improve, with no fever, but he is weak and needing the encouragement that Summer and I are enthusiastically dishing out. We are on encouragement overdrive on this Saturday morning. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/902/221/858/562/793/original/4035a82732866fdf.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/902/221/854/616/978/original/b705fae0900565d3.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 We embarked on a marathon project that resulted in Summer's pal getting bathed, shaved and otherwise spiffed up. Lots of patience is required. Twice we stopped for a rest. There is no rushing these things and I hope I always remember that it is harder on him than me. Afterwards we all relaxed together. Summer stayed close. She was under my husband's feet and she had her toy fox under her feet. Too cute. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy to watch them interact. We are all looking forward to an easier tomorrow. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/899/407/614/137/180/original/9ab2c0449f2d22b2.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/899/407/622/682/514/original/5868d2d8405370b7.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Our artichoke looking dahlia looks like this today. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/898/407/157/477/395/original/ab6a36e8dd04708a.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Last night was a struggle for my husband so we were awake all night. I wish I could do more to help. We will be resting up today. Summer is a patient loving companion. A couple of old photos for #ThrowbackThursday today. Good morning, Mastodon. #Summer https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/890/893/543/852/236/original/203cc2c1e9308ba2.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/890/893/552/299/009/original/d0d3a59136a1404b.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/890/893/585/241/542/original/667dbd66ee5b915c.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/890/893/605/026/439/original/9d810ff1412fd200.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I probably should have noted Napa, California. Wine country. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I almost forgot to toot my favorite no Summer photos from our early morning adventure. There were dozens of egrets in the marsh. Summer and I had all kinds of ideas why they were hanging out there. I thought they might be speed dating or something. Summer thought it was more like a book club or coffee klatch. Summer's usually right. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/849/890/915/112/original/6b87fc7503d83a43.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/849/872/616/926/original/ecec40d7459fe7a4.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/849/888/843/030/original/126ddbd58bc29f3e.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 The last week has been challenging. Outside chores are backing up a bit. Summer and I put our heads together and decided to worry about one thing at a time. No guilt allowed for things like food spoiling while we were to sick to eat. We took a compost bucket right to the fridge and cleaned it out. Ready for a fresh start. Literally. Laundry is almost all washed and dried. The never ending chore. Beds have fresh sheets. Next was to assess the state of the garden. Yikes. Summer watches over me the whole time. Her most serious look. The good news is that as long as we water before the end of the day and find time to pick blueberries we are good. Summer says that as long as we are feeling healthy we are doing things right. She always makes me feel better. She is a glass half full kind of dog. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/817/565/667/859/original/ba843a90d212a31d.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/817/686/022/129/original/b8050620f0636672.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/886/817/713/350/399/original/16b0019a1d138811.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 In my opinion my county has too many nonprofit entities. I get it that the government used to provide services that have been defunded and people who managed those programs want to keep doing what they do. I wonder how this trend of creating even more top heavy nonprofits is going to help an already struggling rural community? I wish my community was coordinated enough to get behind the best service providers and consolidate. I fear not though. It is painful to watch our tax dollars that should be paying for services misused. The competition for donations and grant funds must be brutal. The best paying job I had when I was working was as a director of a nonprofit. In today's world I would have cut my own salary. It might not be a popular opinion but I think we need to try harder to direct funds to immediately help those in need instead of hiring even more directors. Just my thoughts on the matter. npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 I was going to bake a berry pie yesterday but it didn't happen. Some days it feels like only so much fun is allowed and I used mine on Summer's morning adventure. As a result I ended up with thawed berries in the fridge and a husband who doesn't think he feels well enough to help me eat a pie. What to do? Since the grandkids have a recent hankering for cobblers I cobbled up the berries. Smells really good. I hope they like it. #Baking https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/880/221/515/907/804/original/1c5942867143d6a4.jpg npub15w9ua3g8jqqnpltwc9na6lafggq54ykq0et0u5hpl2l75990eh7qp02huq Norcal Gma 2 Another almost dahlia blossom. Looks like a colorful artichoke. We need some sunshine to literally get these flowers to rise and shine. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/876/571/411/708/113/original/2ed3317854b547e0.jpg
