Hey do you want to avoid this guy's fate? Then do your best to please God. The word translated "forbidden" in this verse is very broad in scope. It can mean loathsome, strange, foreign, estranged, or off limits.
Solomon has said that, generally speaking, a man who finds a wife finds blessing from God (Proverbs 18:22). But on the other hand, those who do not care about God's way of doing things will find themselves with the opposite; a woman who feels like a curse. God pairs the jerk with the harridan, the sex pest with the abusive woman, and so on it goes. If you want a GOOD woman, seek our Lord and His ways FIRST.

This isn't negotiable; if you prefer to say "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church" and reject your duty to defend other Christians, then you are saying that you celebrate the deaths of these children as a *good* thing. Solomon understood the need that humans have for others. We need friendship, we need support, we need edification, we need love. Being a hermit is no way to live your life - even if it is for religious reasons. He is not speaking about a temporary sojourn, like Christ in the wilderness or Elijah's journeys; those periods of isolation were on our Heavenly Father's behalf, spurred on by the Holy Spirit, devoid of selfish motivations.
But the man who says to himself, "I demand constant solitude," is willing to be foolish for the sake of his emotional comfort. Maybe he hates everyone. Maybe he thinks he can be righteous in a vacuum. Maybe he just wants to lick his heart's wounds without pesky tasks like loving his neighbors. But all these are nothing more than excuses to justify selfish service to his emotions. It is not wrong to crave solitude and have it sometimes; but it is foolishness to make solitude a lifestyle. Iron sharpens iron: the hermit wishes to stay blunt and brittle.

Unfortunately, the response to Corporate World Church by the traditional denominations/pop theologians has been pompous and ineffective. Every "faithful" pastor wants to sniff his own farts like rockstars snort cocaine, arrogantly deriding the church growth/seeker sensitive movement as nothing more than itching ears and shallow culture. I've caught myself doing the same thing.
Oh, that would make it easy, wouldn't it?
Such responses excuse laziness and sin on the part of the conservative denominations. They spent decades developing a kind of semi-buddhist approach to the culture war, and started funding massive foreign outreach programs out of disgust for their countrymen. These big mega-corpo-churches aren't growing because of "seekers" wandering in; they're growing because they obsessively engage in outreach - something the traditional denoms have been severely lacking.

So I got asked about weird "community Jesus places" like this:

Why do weird churches pop up, trying desperately to pretend they aren't churches?
It's a response to the so-called "rise of secularism."
The thinking was, in order to get a bunch of godless yuppies to get to Church and hear the Gospel, the assumption must be made that they would scream bloody murder if they hear the word "repent" and they would burst into flames if they saw a Cross.
So in order to reach the "seekers," these places de-emphasize the whole being Christian thing so as to bring people to the Word via some kind of osmosis.
It's also why a whole lot of their sermons are phronetic/life-guide type stuff. "10 ways the Bible fixes your marriage" type of stuff, or "wisdom for money from the Bible." Anything smacking of fire and brimstone is going to be frowned on, because it would be seen as chasing away the people who aren't "ready for it."
The problem is, these places get a lot of butts in seats on Sunday. This makes it a fantastic church model if all you care about is butts in seats, money in the coffer, and a kind of ego-boost that comes with preaching to big crowds. The state of these peoples' souls becomes negligible, because the pastorate is blurred with a business-type of model that emphasizes output. Put that coffee down, pastor, coffee is for closers.

St. Paul adjures us to live as peaceably as possible with everyone (Romans 12:18). He does so after Solomon says much of the same. The thousand years between Solomon and St. Paul serve to vindicate both men.
In the Biblical histories, belligerent men consistently fall, having ignored the wise counsel coming from cooler heads. Rehoboam, Solomon's son, lost the northern ten tribes after dismissing the wise man who told him to lighten the tax burden. Ahab's taste for conflict led to the plot to murder Naboth and the resulting Divine sentence of judgment against Ahab's line. The prophets urged and begged the children of Judah to be peaceful in the face of Exile: they were ignored, and various jewish revolts began, with fruitless bloodshed being the result. After the conquest of Canaan, it seems the only wars and conflicts that God blessed were the ones that were either a last resort or something resulting from grave moral emergencies (e.g., the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem).
So the Scriptural witness is that Christians love peace for its own sake... and fools love conflict for its own sake. Yet the believer *should* be ready to engage in conflict in case it cannot be avoided. Even then, to keep the destruction at a minimum, let us be prepared to end the fight before it truly begins.

We cannot forget that Solomon is speaking to his son, whom he has addressed multiple times in the first eight chapters. If we forget that, then passages like this one end up sounding like a VERY naïve interpretation of monarchism.
Solomon is not positing a medieval monarchism fanaticism, as though he were saying "Oh, but kings never do wrong! Kings are all Godly! They are the closest to God in a society!" Perish the thought. To the contrary, he is telling his son Rehoboam what sort of man he must be when he takes the throne of Israel. It is an exhortation that says he must rule in righteousness, or God may well take him off of that throne.
It is simple: Solomon here advises rulers (especially his son) to love truth, to love righteousness, to have wrath against wrongdoers and to provide blessings for the people. If a king does not do these things, then he may wear the crown but God may not consider the man to be a king anymore...and that means the throne could be handed to someone else.
There is a certain irony to this, since Rehoboam started out as a foolish, hard-headed king. The message did not stick with Solomon's son at first, and it took some hard knocks to get him back on track. Rehoboam's pig headed refusal to listen to the needs of the people (that is, being a blessing to them) cost him the northern ten tribes and all of their territory. He vindicated his father in quite an unfortunate way!

It is unwise to read a single proverb at a time. Solomon often daisy chains two or three together to expand our understanding of the topic.
Here, the poor are first observed as annoying or disliked by their neighbors, while the opposite is true for the rich. And no wonder! The poor man is needy, while the rich man has something to give. The poor man might have bad habits or make unwise choices, while the rich man seems much more stable.
If that was all Solomon said, we might be left thinking that it is wiser to keep company with rich people. After all, it would make life more pleasant, we would have better opportunities to accrue our own wealth, and higher quality friends. But then he gives us another proverb that chastises such thinking. The poor are not disliked because they are unstable, unwise, or dirty; they are disliked because their neighbors who dislike them are selfish sinners. He follows this up by saying the generous are blessed, in connection with the rest of this passage.
The generous man is blessed, because he does not despise the poor. He moves past his normal sinful instinct towards partiality and contempt, and shows compassion on those less fortunate. The one who avoids the poor and embraces the rich is just going along with what sin tells him to do; the righteous man, fighting against his sin, learns to treat people the way God treats them.

Every time I hear some clip of paul washer, he's saying something that amounts to "you should be ashamed of yourself you stupid selfish prick, you aren't a REAL Christian, you should feel horrible for being so horrible!" When it comes to your own speech, remember: quality over quantity. Every sentence carries with it the chance that an unintentional OR intentional sin falls out of your mouth, like you just hacked up a cockroach. The more you speak without thinking about what you say, the bigger roach infestation you'll have.
Imagine if everyone took care with what they said, and did their best to say the *right thing.* Something edifying, something that built others up or corrected problems that they saw. Imagine if people didn't feel like they had to say something about everything. The world would be quite a bit more pleasant wouldn't it?
Ah, but then the Internet happened, and all over the world people multiplied their words. With that increase in careless words came all sorts of sins, blasphemies, heresies, slanders, and worst of all...they all felt justified and wise doing it. Now we have a kind of "cult of words" where people on the Right think that the insane stuff they post will save the West or whatever, when all they did was show politicians the best way to mollify them. A tragedy if there ever was one.
Let's be careful with what we say, and work to build other up then.

1 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
-Proverbs 10:1
The first proverb Solomon offers under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is that our lives impact our parents. This tells us first that we do not exist in a vacuum: we are all individuals, but God has seen to it that we each have a set of immediate connections (starting with our parents), such that we are not *just* individuals.
Of course it is not solely our parents that Solomon is concerned with here. Since our parents are our first neighbors and the first to have responsibility over us, they are taken into consideration before this proverb could be extrapolated out to employer, the state, etc. But just as our actions reflect on and impact our parents, they also reflect on and impact these other neighbors and figures to whom we owe respect. Bad conduct at your job could mean people avoid your business, ruining your boss's reputation. Good conduct abroad will make the citizens of a different country *like* your country, and may help improve international relations. But it starts with the family, with our parents, because they are the bedrock of society.
Because we have parents, the first proverb reminds us to think twice before we make decisions. How shall this decision of mine reflect on my father? How shall it impact his reputation? How would my mother feel about this? By giving matters a second thought, we honor our fathers and mothers as God commands.

Solomon tells us the consequences, that sexual sin (and adultery in particular) destroys a man. Living in the modern era tells us this in graphic detail. The rotten fruit of the sexual revolution is everywhere, shoved in our faces every day. We have to confront the destruction of the married estate, the whelping of children, and the self-denigration of men and women as they begin to see themselves as little more than pleasure-meat for others to enjoy.
But people still do it. They see the consequences of sexual sin every day, but still engage in it. Why would they listen to Solomon? Heck, even theologians sometimes don't listen, like karl barth - who tormented his wife by having his mistress live with them.
I think the cause of this abject failure is that we have been seeing Solomon's wisdom as mere counsel. Solomon tells us it is a matter of life or death; you don't argue with your passions, you flee temptation when you can't force them to obey your will. But the Church began to see this as a matter of mere advice, as though Solomon were telling us that by human reason, merely knowing the consequences, would stop it. What a dour mistake we made. Sexual urges are not a matter of arguments; you cannot defeat your lust with facts and logic. With real wisdom, one acts. Truth be told, it is that way with all matters of wisdom. One machine has parts taken away from it in order to make another machine run.
Liberalism has come a long way from seeing man as the economic animal; now it has developed to seeing man as the economic machine, and parts must be cannibalized to keep the great operation running.

A common objection among the enemies of Christianity is that our faith would turn us into self-sacrificing slaves. They believe that being a Christian means willingly offering up whatever anyone wants for any reason whatsoever so long as it isn't sin.
But here, Solomon emphasizes that rational self interest plays a role in our lives. If someone asks for you to co-sign a loan, solely for their benefit, the answer is no! They might say "ah but you must love your neighbor, so become my collateral." Your answer must be "my life is worth more than the loan you think you need." Solomon says that if you *do* find yourself pledged like that, then you must do everything in your power to regain your freedom.
Christians must have an attitude of selflessness and generosity. We aren't hustlers and we aren't allowed to be greedy. But Scripture teaches that your life itself, which is precious to God, must also be precious to you. We are told love our neighbors as ourselves: if we do not love ourselves we cannot love our neighbors!
This is why Solomon says what he says. Your life is too valuable to sacrifice to frivolity or someone else's selfish desires. He urges his readers to maintain personal freedom as much as they can, and to keep from entering foolish obligations. After all, being broke or enslaved or disabled because of frivolities or scams hurts our ability to love our neighbors!

The embarrassment that is buddhism finds its highest virtue in apathy. "Giving up, the religion." No pursuit of higher ideals, no passion for the well-being of others, just an earnest seeking after a coma-like blankness. The lamewad religion that is buddhism doesn't want you to actually live the life you were given.
Unfortunately, vast swaths of the Church concur with this, and it has made many a church become characterized by this same loser-attitude dynamic. "Don't desire political victory, that's idolatry. Don't seek sexual fulfillment with your wife, that's lust. Don't fight, don't have ambition, don't do anything but pray and take the Sacrament."
The truth is, God has never intended for you to abolish yourself. Scripture retains rules for marriage and parenting and business precisely because God wants Christians to seek after these things, offering a perfected version of what mankind seeks anyway.

It's a misreading of Genesis 12:3
"I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
St. Paul comes out and says that this is a reference to Christ alone in the book of Galatians. Scofield was paid to say that the referent to "in you" was actually the people descended from Abraham rather than the Savior who descended from him according to Christ's humanity
