I know BioShock Infinite gets some grief from fans of the original game, but personally, I always found it to be insanely interesting.
The setting is particularly amazing to me. I have an intense fascination with the era from the mid 19th century through the first decade of the 20th. Having the latter part of that era aesthetically captured in Columbia is something I will never forget.
Plus, it was the first game I bought directly from Steam, so nostalgia has a part too.

I don't know if I'm the only one but when I saw the whole Scarif sequence in Rogue One, the bombing run sequence of Deception at Destrillion immediately came to mind.
I think it was the oceanic aspect and the fact that the areas you bomb are surrounding a large central structure like the comms tower in Rogue One. :odysee_thinking:

@nprofile…j6ac It's not so much the food, it's what's in it and how it's processed (as well as age-old gluttony, of course).
In the States, everything is saturated with seed oils, overly processed meats and cheeses, bucketloads of unneeded salt and sugar, etc. Plus, people drink most of their calories through sugared drinks and alcohol, two things I avoid like the plague... well, with one exception: Baja Blast at Taco Bell is still one of my only sugared drink weaknesses :guilded_lul:

@nprofile…lssg I never went to college (thank the Lord for that) but I had been in several colleges and trade schools through the 2000s and 2010s. The ones I visited looked roughly the same way until ~2013 or so, the only difference being the LCD screens instead.

Apparently, fans are in the process of reviving FunOrb, the "hard casual" browser gaming site by Jagex, the devs behind RuneScape!
This exists in two forms: Arcanists, the most popular FunOrb game, is now free on Steam. Then AlterOrb, an open source restoration of the wider library, is free from their site.
It's incredible to know these games haven't been lost to history. I had a load of fun with them as a teenager!

I also love that he reaffirmed that his intentions with the company are to double down on RuneScape as a franchise rather than trying to branch out like they had been for years.

@nprofile…lssg Yeah, he took over about a year and a half ago and has completely turned things around, especially for the modern game. They've removed Treasure Hunter, made a commitment to fix all sorts of gameplay and monetization issues, they canceled new pride events and they now focus on great gameplay over number crunching or political statements.
The most glorious comeback I've ever seen in gaming history!

Every time I see an interview with the new CEO of Jagex, I'm more and more impressed by his resolve and where he's leading the company (and thus, the games).
Never before in history has a dying legacy MMO been able to turn itself around like they're doing right now.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was one of my first forays into anime and it still has one of the most incredible vibes I've ever seen in any show, anime or otherwise.
It's like a more utopian take on common cyberpunk themes, viewed through the lens of the early 2000s, which makes it extremely unique.

One of the games that formulated my childhood was Star Wars: Rebel Assault II.
It's an on-rails shooter and not particularly amazing in terms of design, acting or CGI, but it stood right next to the original trilogy, building my earliest memories of Star Wars.
The sense of Star Wars atmosphere was spot on, and it placed you right into a story that FELT like one of the movies, yet didn't share any of their plots.

I have my issues with Garriott's worldview and Shroud of the Avatar had some problems, but this is another one of those whitepill scenarios like Perifractic buying Commodore!

This may be partial blasphemy to the retro gaming community, but I genuinely prefer Deus Ex: Human Revolution over the original Deus Ex.
Don't get me wrong, the original is great and an absolute classic, but HR has such an awesome sense of atmosphere (yes, even with the "urine filter"), a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and overall rock solid gameplay.

@nprofile…f8nn I think the reason people disliked it was because it came RIGHT after Green Hill, and felt far more in line with a standard platformer. Where Green Hill was a challenge to the entire concept of a platformer, Marble Zone's design was blockier and had intentional speed traps that just broke the flow. I don't hate it myself, but I definitely do understand the criticisms.

@nprofile…8y2y It's immensely unfortunate. I don't blame Valve, there wasn't much they could do, but it still sucks. My advice would be to just wait for the Steam Deck 2, as I would guess it will probably release after the RAMpocalypse starts to die down.
That, or you could buy a refurb online if you can find any in stock. It's insanely customizable and fixable so even if you buy a refurb that's not in great shape, you probably could fix it up pretty affordably.

@nprofile…kqnv Honestly, their modern look reminds me of the look Chipotle had when I was younger as well: kinda industrial, brutalist, edgy... except TB took out the cool factor of that aesthetic lol. That said, it really is one of the better modern restaurant aesthetics overall.
Also, if you live in small town USA, you'll find a lot of diners and restaurants that have retro aesthetics. Maybe not old school TB but still, pleasant throwbacks!

A very special era for Bethesda. This was their "last chance" game. They were dealing with a sequence of commercial failures after Daggerfall and if Morrowind wasn't the smash hit it became, they probably would've shut down. We may never have gotten legendary games like Oblivion, Fallout 3 (and, by extension, New Vegas) or Skyrim.
Some people argue it doesn't hold up well but I disagree. Yes, some mods will make it a better experience, but ultimately, it's still a rock-solid RPG!

Maybe it was because I was always a PC gamer but I just felt like the PS3/360 didn't offer much compared to the Wii, which had an extremely unique game library.

Really though, I love when I spot affordable peripherals that end up being great. I've been rocking a $40 mechanical keyboard & mouse combo for almost 5 years now and aside from input issues when the contacts occasionally need cleaning, it has worked out incredibly well for me.
Even the mouse, which clearly has a bunch of loose hardware inside of it (you hear it when you move it around), still works perfectly!

@nprofile…468s I'd personally have to disagree. I love JRPGs these days but part of why I avoided them for most of my life is because they lack the character creation that makes it possible to truly roleplay a character.
And it's not just a slight against JRPGs, I also would call games like The Witcher 3 "RPG lite" because you're playing as a set character with no real ability to customize that character beyond stats and gear.

Has anyone else noticed that Mastodon is trying to essentially force you to include alt text for images now? It drives me insane having to exit that stupid popup every time I post an image.
I get that some folks have various eye issues, and I feel for them, but I really don't get the point of the alt text concept. :terry_nono:

@nprofile…wuf6 Winamp is still great! I'd still be using it if not for the fact that I needed to start getting used to something I could easily use on Linux as well. These days, I use Strawberry for the most part, with either KDE's Elisa or Audacious as backups. The latter of those actually supports old school Winamp themes, which is pretty slick!
And yeah, FLAC is just too good to not use at this point, provided you've got the space lol

I knew Half-Life and Portal were in a shared universe, and that there's a crossover in Half-Life 2, but I didn't have a clue just how much the two intertwine. I also didn't know just how deep it all goes.
I mean, Half-Life lore (in particular) is super interesting sci-fi goodness but the rabbit hole goes way deeper than I realized! :steam: :spinningdisc:

@nprofile…wuf6 The main reason I ask is because I know there was (and still is) some debate on whether someone should play the PC port or the original SNES rom of Chrono Trigger. I guess it depends on whether I have money any time soon to get the pixel remaster or not :ryolaugh:

@nprofile…wuf6 Oh, I should go for the pixel remaster instead of the SNES version? The only reason I went for the pixel remaster of the first game was because I figured, being a title on the original NES, it probably lacked the QoL expectations that I like in more modern JRPGs haha

I've enjoyed every one of them so I'm looking forward to FF6 because I've heard virtually everyone agree that it's either the best or a top 3 in the series :loz:

After much frustration, I finally finished Super Metroid entirely. Up until now, I had gotten far in the game but never outright beat it. Before now, the only Metroid game I completely beat was Zero Mission.
Great game (and a very solid ending) but man, there are certain segments that get me wanting to rip out my hair :terry_nono:

I still say the filter options in the Genesis Classics Collection are some of the best CRT filters you can get.
First shot is raw pixel art, no scanlines.
Second shot is raw pixel art with scanlines.
Third shot is bilinear filtering with scanlines.
Each one looks better than the last, in my opinion. While the bilinear filtering DOES cause blurriness, with the scanlines, it approximates the way pixels blend with a CRT, which is why I play it that way on almost every game.

@nprofile…w2ks I tried doing that on my first few attempts but he always either caught them or turned to face the 'camera' and no damage was done. The only reliable method I was able to actually pull off is the charge beam.
I did manage to get to Ridley last night but ended up dying, sending me way back yet again :terry_nono:

Alright Retro Gaiden (and the larger retro scene in the Fediverse), I have a question for y'all!
What third-party controllers for the original Xbox or PS2 would you recommend buying?
I'm not referring to USB controllers for PC, but rather, controllers that are compatible with original hardware. Also, preferably, I'd like them to have the same (or similar) ergonomics and button glyphs as OEM controllers for those consoles (color not important).

@nprofile…03tr @nprofile…gtst I'm not saying all of our problems are related to one man, not by a long shot. There haven't been any TRULY great presidencies since JFK (though I did personally enjoy Trump's first term outside of COVID, and I'm enjoying the momentum of this second term).
But that cuts both ways. People blame Trump for issues that were catastrophically exacerbated by Biden, which is incredibly unfair, but it's not surprising because TDS definitely exists.

@nprofile…menh Very nice and very good stats! I played the game (including both OSRS and RS3) consistently up through summer of last year. Jagex just really went off the deep end IMO, so I dwindled my time. At this point, I still log into OSRS occasionally but don't have active membership for the first time since early 2011 and it's strange :guilded_lul:
I don't really actively play any MMOs except Elder Scrolls Online and Brighter Shores these days, mostly because I lack the time I used to (sadly).

Once I move my main PC to Linux in October, I'm strongly considering switching one of my current Linux laptops over to Commodore OS Vision.
It's an epic Linux distro inspired by Commodore's rich history and includes preinstalled emulators for Commodore and other systems.
It seems like the perfect distro to use for a retro PC build. It's also headed for a 3.0 release in just over a week!

@nprofile…g7ez @nprofile…n7a3 Steam Decks don't cost a grand. The mid-tier model costs roughly the same as Switch 2 with twice the storage, cheaper games and a better overall platform experience. If you're just emulating, even the cheapest LCD model (which would be used/refurbished now) would suffice. I went for the highest tier, the 1TB OLED and that was $650.
Only thing the Switch 2 really does have going for it is the first party titles and the 120hz refresh rate (compared to the Deck's 90).

What's your favorite retro game demo?
For me, the demo for Star Wars - Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is near the top. The mission you get to play through isn't in the final game and man, did it leave an impression!
I'd also have to say the demo for its follow-up, Jedi Academy, was equally great but mostly on account of the fact that you play two actual levels from the full game.
