#ActivityPub carries posts, follows, likes and so on, but not moderation. A ban stays trapped on the instance that issued it. So, for instance, an account banned for racism on one instance stays unknown to the next. Moderation is activity too, and it should travel like the rest: signed and verifiable. This is a real problem, and others have explored it already. I will look into what already exists and see what we could build on for #HolosSocial.

A hypothetical about chat control and #HolosSocial
Say a law one day required client-side scanning. The relay only ever sees encrypted data, so a scan would catch nothing. To read content, it must run in the client, before encryption. A closed client could add it silently in an update. An open one cannot: the code is public, anyone can recompile without it.
Would an open source #E2EE messenger on the #Fediverse like Holos be breaking the law if it did nothing? I am not sure. Your opinion?

#HolosSocial relay is confirmed to be very stable. I will officially tag it soon so admins can run their own relay with a script to easily install it on their VPS.
Using Holos with a custom domain and a cloud for media allows you to own your portable identity on the #Fediverse. Relays become only an infrastructure for it. Your device runs the #ActivityPub server and works as smoothly as any other app. Micro-blogging, media, and video, all from a single account. Switch with a simple tap.

The #HolosSocial relay is now ready for an official prod release. Users might have noticed better responsiveness from it.
The app is already available on #AltStore for iOS, and will be on the #PALStore. It is available with the apk, ipa and all the desktop files on the website and #Codeberg. It is also on #FDroid, but releases are stuck on 1.8.1, which I will fix.
Publishing on the big stores like Google Play or the App Store is not my goal.

#Fedilab uses #UnifiedPush for push notifications in every version. The Google Play version comes with a built-in distributor that relies on Google, so notifications work right away. The #FDroid version cannot include that built-in distributor, so you need to install a separate one, like #ntfy or #Sunup. Once it is installed and selected in Fedilab, push works the same way. This is why F-Droid users need an extra app while Google Play users do not. This extra step is not specific to Fedilab.

Tomorrow, I am back to #Fedilab fixes and enhancements. There is currently a beta version with several fixes. I will also try to improve the speed. The local cache keeps growing without limits, and past a certain point it slows the app down instead of making it faster. I will also add missing features from #Mastodon 4.6 (media descriptions for profile picture and header).

#Fedilab has an old entry called "Extra features", which was added long ago when #Mastodon forks came around with features such as reactions. This is something to rework: the app can detect what an instance supports and enable supported features automatically.

#Fedilab lets you fetch a remote conversation to retrieve all the messages your instance does not know about. This feature is limited by design, because the public context on the #Mastodon API is capped (40 ancestors and 60 descendants without authentication).
That is why the next Fedilab release will add a merge mode: the messages already known by your instance are merged with the remote ones. This way, the case where the feature worked against its own purpose can no longer happen.

To beta testers #Fedilab 3.42.0-beta-2 is available. It adds a language check when posting (detects language mismatch, disabled by default). It also brings several fixes: collection errors on profiles, adding accounts to collections, notification timeline empty on restart, animated emoji freezes, and multiple app windows when sharing.

This is Haru and Tanos. Haru is the black cat. We adopted him from a shelter at two years old, after he lived there his whole life. Tanos is a Malinois. We took him in when his owner could not keep him anymore.

Yes, it works like a deep link. The difference is that regular deep links require domain verification to claim a domain. With web+ap://, it uses a protocol instead. It's the right solution for the Fediverse since you can't declare every instance domain. Any app that registers the protocol can handle it.

#HolosDiscover 1.7.2 is available. With over 9 million indexed posts, search now detects whether a term is rare or common and picks the most efficient strategy accordingly. Trending and stats now use a prebuilt cache for faster responses. Account search no longer returns false positives. Hashtag counts now respect filters. Several UI improvements included.

It's not about saying Fedilab is better than any other project, of course. It's just about how I personally approach development. And about thanking all the people who contributed with suggestions, bug fixes, translations and financial support. All of this is why Fedilab is still here after 9 years.

My first motivation when I started working on Open Source was listening to contributors full of ideas. That's the real engine. Fedilab actually got many built-in features before they became available on Mastodon itself (which created extra work later, syncing databases once they were officially added). But that's exactly what drives me. Not following a scheme, just following what you want to build. That's how I work on my projects, and I can't change that.

#UntrackMe 2.0 is now available on #FDroid. After more than 3 years without updates (deep links no longer worked on Android 12+), I finally redefined the app as a browser that checks links you tap to clean them before delegating the action to another app.
That was the only solution. I'll follow your feedback closely.

Concerning #Fedilab, with close to 8 million messages indexed, I think #HolosDiscover now has enough content to be worth integrating.
Full API support would allow pinning tailored timelines and interacting with new content. This would be particularly useful for small instances.

I just sent my first grant request to help fund my open source work, mainly to replace my old Mac. It crashes during builds, forcing me to kill apps and delete files to free up space, then wipe everything and reinstall emulators when switching between Android and iOS. For now I've focused on Android, but it defeats the whole point of buying a Mac. A new machine would let me work on both.
Fingers crossed! I'll keep you informed.

#UntrackMe 2.0 will be available soon.
Fully rebuilt with a new approach: the app now registers as a browser on Android 12+. Every link you tap goes through UntrackMe first, gets cleaned of tracking params, redirected to a privacy-friendly frontend if relevant, then handed off to the browser or app of your choice.
It also follows redirect chains to bypass tracking shorteners and unwrap any wrappers such as Google redirects.

A quick update on the fundraiser. Honestly, I felt almost ashamed to ask for this kind of help, because my own project was depending on support while starting to create frustration in my daily dev because of the machine. The response confirms it: Holos and my iOS projects aren't mature enough yet to have built that trust. So I'm dropping iOS for now and focusing on Android. The campaign is closed and contributors have been refunded.

No need to worry about the dictionaries, that's more on the dev side: I dig through openly licensed sources to find suitable wordlists, then adjust them based on feedback once the language is live. What I really need help with is the translations (bot commands and messages + web UI strings), available on Weblate.

While some of my projects support both Android and iOS, I have no plans to rewrite #Fedilab for iOS. Maintaining all its features across both platforms would be impractical. The app will be modernized with a better UI but will remain a dedicated Android app.

The real game will be between instances.
End of day: instances ranked by average score, not by number of players. A small instance with skilled players will be able to top the leaderboard.
Minimum 5 players per instance to qualify. Weekly leaderboard posted every Sunday.
Words will come from player suggestions. The suggester won't know when their word is picked.

Anti-cheat: the bot will track stats over a rolling window. Suspicious patterns (too many first-try solves, impossibly low averages) will be flagged automatically.
Flagged players can still play but will be excluded from instance rankings. No automated bans. Admin reviews manually.
Fair play for everyone.

What if fediverse instances battled each other in a daily word game?
A bot posts a word to guess. You reply privately. Only real dictionary words accepted. End of day: instances ranked by average score, not size. A tiny instance can top the leaderboard.
Words come from player suggestions. First-try guesses carry less weight to keep it fair.
English only first.

It explains how instance blocks work (trusted denylists, manual blocks, automated bridge detection), how to report illegal content, and how instance admins can appeal a block. If you sent me a DM and I never replied, I probably never received it. Mastodon 4.3 introduced a notification policy that drops private mentions from accounts you don't follow by default. #Fedilab does not yet support this API, so there was no way to see or change this setting from the app. I am working on adding support for this feature. Sorry if I missed your message.

New search filters: min_likes and min_boosts to filter results by engagement. Trending sections now load independently for faster rendering.
Search rate limit increased from 5 to 30 requests per minute.
Bluesky bridges are now detected and blocked. AT Protocol lacks indexable flags, so bridged users cannot consent to being indexed.
Spam farming instances are now blocked via IFTAS denylist import.

I'm discovering the iOS dev environment and I realized I shouldn't have used internal TestFlight. It requires giving beta testers a role in the project, which grants them some access to App Store Connect. My bad, I assumed it worked like Android.
Tomorrow I'll set it up properly with external testing, but I'm wondering: is it possible to validate testers one by one to avoid people who didn't get an invitation from joining? iOS devs, please help an Android dev :) Shares appreciated!

Ten days ago, I asked for help with the server hosting #Fedilab, #HolosSocial, #HolosDiscover and more.
After comparing several options, I went with a dedicated server from #Hetzner. It's slightly above what I had in mind but much better suited for the load and future growth.

#UntrackMe relied on Android's intent system to intercept links. Recent Android versions broke this approach, so the concept has been rethought: the app will now act as a transparent browser set as default for all links. All URLs are silently cleaned from tracking parameters. When a privacy frontend is available, the link is redirected to your preferred one. If a redirect is detected, it is blocked until validated, and the destination is opened directly, bypassing the redirect.

The rework on #UntrackMe is almost over. When set as default, it will act as a proxy and strip any tracking parameters before delegating the action to another app.
If it detects a supported front end (for YouTube, X links etc.), it will automatically redirect you to the alternative front-end of your choice.
If it detects a shortened or hidden URL (like t.co, etc.), you will be warned with full details before proceeding.

With #Holos, you can have your identity on your own domain. No server? A simple CNAME record is enough. Already have a server? Point a subdomain to handle #ActivityPub traffic and serve a static JSON file on your root domain.
This is a step toward the same sovereignty #Nostr offers with cryptographic identities, but staying in the #ActivityPub ecosystem you already know.

While I took all possible actions to make the translate server as stable as possible, it still suffers from outages. But now, a service listening to its state automatically restarts it when it goes down.
It should never be down for hours (when I was off), except for a few minutes of outages now.

The next step with #HolosSocial will be to let you use your root domain as your identity while still using a subdomain for the relay.
Yes, #Holos is kind of like #nostr but with #ActivityPub. The main difference: your data lives on your device, not on a server, and relays remain completely dumb.

Sorry for Google Play users, the release cannot reach the production channel due to some libraries that don't respect the 16 KB page size alignment. I need to investigate, as nothing has changed since 3.37.1 (and I already took care of that).

The translation service is being abused by some spam IPs. I have added Fail2Ban to protect the service from shutting down. If you encounter any issues while the service is still up, I will fix the rules.

#UntrackMe will be updated soon (after 3 years of inactivity). The app redirects tracking links to privacy-friendly frontends, strips tracking parameters, and detects redirections. The update will modernize the codebase and bring compatibility with the latest Android versions.

Friendica does not support post editing via the Mastodon API, so this cannot be fixed on Fedilab's side. The edit button should be hidden for Friendica accounts though, I will add that.

Did you know that crash reports sent to #Fedilab through emails have been significantly reduced for the last few updates? Thank you for sending them, they are really useful and they have contributed to fixes in the repo.
Don't hesitate to contribute by enabling crash reports in Settings > Interface > Enable crash reports.

I need help with the server hosting all my open-source projects: #Fedilab, #HolosSocial, #HolosDiscover, and more.
The current server costs €350/year but is no longer suited for the load. I often run out of disk space. I need to migrate to a more powerful one with expandable storage. Renewal is due in a few days.

#HolosDiscover just hit 3 million indexed posts.
What matters more than the number: 145k deletions processed, 83k edits tracked, and over 1k opt-outs respected, all in real time.
Respecting people is the priority and the only way to do it right is to be a full #ActivityPub participant, receiving deletions, edits, and opt-outs as they happen. Before indexing anyone, Holos Discover follows their account, so they know they are being indexed and can opt out.

I want this project to go further while remaining accessible to everyone. Running your own server on your phone, owning your identity, controlling your data should not be reserved for tech-savvy people. Missing features will be built with the community. I have always listened, and that will not change. I do not set aside other projects either, they remain just as important. This is just the beginning. (4/4)

Taking on challenges like #E2EE direct messages or making your identity independent from any server was a priority for me. Not depending on any external API means all the cards are in our hands to respond to what people need, without compromise. Behind the scenes, the work between the app and the relay is tightly coupled. A lot of relay improvements, especially around Bloom filter performance, are not always reflected in changelogs.(3/4)

So you've enabled remote conversation by default? It's not the eye icon but more like a GPS icon. If you don't see that icon, you might have enabled that feature by default. Try disabling it.

Can you see them via the web app? Also, just tap the target button at the top right, it should load all messages, even those that your instance is not aware of.

#Fedilab 3.37.1 has been published. This release fixes bad behavior with reverse (aka normal) timelines. Also, if you filter links, the app will also check those embedded in href tags. Reported bugs have also been fixed.

Something important to understand with #Fedilab and remote timelines, conversations and threads. This feature uses the public API of remote instances, that means there is no direct interaction between your account (token) and the remote instances when messages or accounts are displayed.
This is only when you decide to interact that the app will apply the appropriate actions in the background.
That's why it is impossible to apply your moderation rules (muted/blocked accounts remain visible).

It seems that the reverse timeline is something that meets a lot of expectations. Since the last release, a lot of bugs/enhancements have been reported for this new feature. The goal will be to have #Fedilab 3.37.1 working nicely with the reverse timeline.

At that zoom level the map can't fetch shelters and vets from OpenStreetMap, it would be too much data. You need to zoom in closer for OSM results to appear.
As for community reports, we are just getting started so the map is empty for now. It needs contributions to grow. That's the whole point :)

#PawFed is not limited to reports about animals found or in distress. You can use it to offer help or ask for it.
Use #offer when you provide help, #request when you need it, #info to share useful information.
Everything works through #ActivityPub. If you delete your original post mentioning [@PawFed](https://pawfed.org ), the related report is automatically removed from the map. No database ghost. You stay in control of your data. (1/3)

The map combines community reports from the #Fediverse and shelters and veterinaries from #OpenStreetMap loaded in real time as you zoom in.
PawFed is built to be a community project, not a one person effort. There will be many ways to contribute beyond posting reports.

PawFed is not tied to any country or language. Right now it works in French and English: #chat #perdu and #cat #lost produce the same report.
But the goal is to go further. Hashtag and keyword detection is based on translation files. When someone contributes a new language, PawFed starts understanding posts in that language automatically. (2/3)
