We could hear these guys calling to their mates at almost every bit of woodland adjacent to water, but they seldom came down to eye level. Something triggered the chief hunters instincts and he immediately went into stalk mode. And they dance. And they give each other gifts (pond weed). There are hundreds of them around at the moment - all jockeying for nesting spots. I won't pretend they're an attractive bird - and the sounds and smells they make are even less so. But they are interesting to watch. I really shouldn't have bothered going at all. then this happed! Little Eagle lovely and close (this is a genuinely wild bird!) and even at times at eye level. These are Red Tailed Black Cockatoos which are currently desperately searching for food in suburbia (as so many of the native trees they historically relied on have been cleared). These were feeding at my neighbours. Why are 2 of the 7 ducklings in this family yellow, when the rest are brown? The parents are Grey Teals and all the babies SHOULD be brown. Has Mum strayed?
