In some more fun #puregotk #GNOME news - I managed to get Meson to work on macOS. You can even write a GObject library in Go now, compile it to a dylib and typelib, and then another puregotk-based app (or GJS, Python etc.) can load the custom widget and display it with no issues!
Even cooler - you can cross-compile this for macOS from Linux, no CGo/macOS C compiler required :)

Kind of neat how well #GNOME apps fit in on macOS :) Since @npub17ds…pmve added support for macOS to #puregotk in https://codeberg.org/puregotk/puregotk/pulls/43 this week I thought I’d give it a shot on my new MacBook Neo - and it works really well. Cross-compilation from Linux to macOS was super easy thanks to purego, no cross-compiler needed, just `GOOS=darwin GOARCH=arm64`. Plus, discovered that macOS’s arm64 library paths are different!

Alrighty, everything set up for the #GNOME showcase at the hardware bazaar meetup later. A GNOME OS laptop, a #phosh tablet and phone, all connected with each other via #p2panda (via Reflection as a demo), #Nextcloud (calendar, contacts, files) and #Valent/KDE Connect (notifications, clipboard etc.) :)

Anyways, heading to Shenzen again tomorrow and going to see how far I can get with just a Linux phone. If I can pay for and control the massage chair in the local mall with it (WeChat mini app) I'm going to actually go crazy because in Canada the same phone can't even buy me a sandwich

The fact that I can use a Linux phone in China and be a fully participating member of society, including mobile payments and everything, but I can't do that in any EU country, the US or Canada due to the payment methods there requiring SafetyNet and China not requiring that, has really broken my brain a little bit

Kind of? I don't know. There is a way to make Linux systems reasonably secure. There is no currently known way to make something like OpenClaw secure due to fundamental limitations around prompt injection.

I think the reason why some people really like things like OpenClaw is just because of the fact that they seem ... liberating in a way. The idea of you being able to have your own interface, commands, and automations, all customised, open, running on your own systems ... it's like a dream. It's also simply _impossible_ using the current incentives in society (which will probably start abusing DRM APIs to prevent you from automating screen taps and stuff), and just so absurdly dangerous ...

Matrix (specifically Element with Spaces) is the only platform that will one day provide an experience similar to what Discord provides today on an open, federated, secure protocol.

And yeah, I mean I mostly use LLMs as a way to find _where to do stuff_ in the first place, not to do actual stuff. Think "I get a flicker on my boot screen between the Asus Logo and the GNOME logo" → Plymouth etc.

Will do! I've done tons of WebDAV stuff in the past, and the core functionality of the Nextcloud client is literally just syncing files and folders + polling notifications for logins etc., and that can probably be optional too. Virtual files would be a bit complex to support, but I feel like that's what the FUSE which GNOME already ships is for anyways. The WebDAV login credentials I can probably even fetch from the secrets store so that you don't have to sign in again.

I managed to get my new #Palm Tungsten C on the internet and damn, it can still read RSS feeds today! Slashdot and Ars Technica were the only ones I could find with plain HTTP support, but it works really well!

You might be able to give it away for free? But that's not how you create an ecosystem of repairability at all; fabbing a PCB w/o any way to pay for it isn't sustainae. CC-NC is really intended more for culture and less for stuff like firmware or hardware components. If you want break the cycle around printer licensing, making it proprietary and not open source (unlike CC-BY-SA here would be here, for example) is not the way forward

Hell yeah, that's awesome! Nextcloud is such a great piece of software, and it's getting better every day. If calls on Nextcloud Talk get too laggy, the high-performance backend (which is a bit of a PITA to set up, but makes it scale well) can really help!

It's always been a balance of embracing new technologies (and reaping the benefits it might have - while also dealing with the constant distraction of shiny new things) vs. staying narrow and fighting scope creep, but potentially becoming obsolete.
I feel like as we become older, we all lean towards the latter. And sometimes, that's a good thing (I'm glad I ignored the whole serverless and crypto stuff), and sometimes it's a bad thing (very happy I jumped on the k8s bandwagon)

I honestly just look at it the same way we look at spreadsheet-driven development and Visual Basic now. A good way to get non-technical people to write applications for their own narrow use cases, in narrow runtime environments (like browsers), with narrow, non-critical use cases.

I found some (crash free & with TÜV) for below €60k (smth like $80k CAD here). It's still hella expensive but not totally crazy compared to the cost of new cars these days, plus it's still analog enough to not be full of nonsense subscriptions ...
For the actual fun of driving it though, the 1st or 2nd gen TT is also incredible haha

Some updates on the #Framework situation. I'm glad that they are being explicit about these kinds of things. Probably still shouldn't give money to someone like DHH or boost them (which, yk, if you're in support of queer people and immigrants, why pay people that want no immigrants or queer people to exist?). That being said, this seems honest and tracks with Framework's history before the whole DHH stuff IMHO.

I guess it depends what that "additional software" here is. Containers/OCI images? Sure. Flatpaks? Sure. EBPF code? Sure. Random privileged `run0` replacement vendored as a statically linked binary? Not really. Out-of-tree kernel driver like the type you would usually install with akmods? Also not really.

Oh no I think that makes a lot of sense for postmarketOS specifically, and as a dev I see myself using something like this. But for end users I really want it to be impossible to change the rootfs without sandboxes.

I'm not completely sure if I agree with that. Stuff like the meta build system for GNOME OS is now able to bootstrap an entire, basically end-user ready OS without any packages (unless I'm missing something).

As a dev, personally I really value having a direct relationship with my users with no one between them and I. The DMA gives every EU citizen the right to this now too, so the regulatory environment is pretty clear on it as well. Flatpak finally makes this possible on Linux, and I think it's the primary reason why it's the future compared to the old sea of packages. The time of middle men in software is over

I don't think that's a thing we should be encouraging. FFI as in linking directly to a differnet language with a C FFI is a PITA no matter what language, esp. with static linking in my experience. In Go we just use wasm for this now mostly

Oh for Python I 100% agree, that package ecosystem is a mess of unbelievable proportions. I don't think I've once been able to pull a Python project from source and have it just work. That's very specific to Python not having a `package.json`, lockfile & Bundler concept though IMHO. Go, Rust and JS are very different from this.

I think the problem mostly is that "sea of packages" OSes don't support very basic requirements of modern apps. Multiplex depends on a specific version of the `pion` WebRTC library, but weron depends on a different specific version of that library too. With a sea of packages and no Flatpak - no way to model that environment. APT, DNF etc. don't really allow different (minor) versions of the same package locally for a lot of (good) reasons :)

Oh and neither should they be! It depends on whatever language those are written in. Need a codec written in Go? Include it in your Flatpak by building it with the Flatpak Go SDK. Need a codec written in Rust? Include it in your Flatpak by building it with the Flatpak Rust SDK. No such thing as a "host codec" when all apps are Flatpaks after all :)
As for kernel modules - those are special :) I wonder if there will be a systemd-sysext equivalent for them some day.

Well the compromise is to use the language's package manager (npm, pip, cargo, go get etc.), in a container if necessary. C is probably the only exception, although in the case of Flatpak that's also a dependency that would be defined that way after all.
`apt install node-lodash` is the path to insanity IMHO.
