Lost my mother 5 years ago last week

Engineering minds tend to drift toward work that is objective / measurable / intellectually satisfying… but doesn’t require confronting users.

Social-only has probably been focused on too much. However, we can’t and shouldn’t throw it out, IMO.
Social is the shared data layer of human relationships. The interoperability of that layer is the killer feature of Nostr. It doesn’t need to exist in one place or be a destination in and of itself… but if we lose that, I think we lose what’s actually revolutionary here.
Human civilization isn’t built on software. It’s built on coordination between people. Technology only matters insofar as it improves our ability to discover one another, build trust, communicate, and exchange value.
The revolutionary thing about Nostr is that the same identity, graph, content, reputation, and permissions can flow across applications without anyone asking permission.
So while it’s tough to get right, I still think that’s the foundation everything else is built on.

Rather than presenting Bitcoin as an act of rebellion, Satoshi presented it as a better tool.
He never once called himself a “cypherpunk”.
Why? Probably because he understood that freedom tech spreads farther when it’s introduced as an open-source innovation rather than a political revolution.
We can learn a lot from this IMO.

Won’t be long. The spec is a lot more friendly to machines and completely open. You could probably vibe yourself a client that does it, but we need a richer merchant network

Freedom comes from owning productive assets outright, generating positive cash flow, and minimizing obligations to anyone else.
From that perspective, Bitcoin is “freedom money” precisely because you don’t need permission to hold it or spend it.
Borrowing against it flips that relationship:
-You voluntarily encumber your sovereign asset.
-You now owe a creditor.
-Your future cash (sat) flow is committed to servicing debt.
-If you fail, someone else has a legal claim on your Bitcoin.

You said this was different than borrowing money you don’t have.
IRL nobody secures loans with thin air, never have… it’s always collateralized against something they can take from you either now or in the future.
You leverage yourself and take a bet that you can pay it off (and/or in these cases, that the volatile asset you’re borrowing against goes UP within the timeframe of the loan).
The risk/reward asymmetry still favors the debtor. So it’s really not that different.
