Alright #gardening folks, what are your favourite small trees to grow in pots?
I am considering adding one more plant to a zone 9 / PNW patio that gets morning and afternoon but not midday sun. Currently there is a smoke tree, a black elder, a clematis (Bill McKenzie) on a trellis, and several pots of succulents including local stonecrops.

Anybody got a zine or other handout for kids about how to wear a mask?
My kiddo has been giving colourful kn95s to other interested kids... but those kids often have no info on how to wear them properly, how to handle them safely, why bother, etc. I have printables for grown-ups but it would be rad to have something cute and easy to read for the under 10 crowd.

I know there is lots of research into terpenes for pain relief right now, driven by cannabis trends. But since it's all so understudied still, I thought that rather than aiming for a hops variety with high myrcene or whatever I would use the herbalism technique of trusting my senses to tell me what my body likes. In other words, get the one I most like to smell. So anyway, I would appreciate any tips on which varieties to seek out to smell!

Another one is Five Seasons, about garden designer Piet Oudolf who did the High Line in New York. He's kind of grumpy (Dutch), but there are lots of quiet and beautiful shots of literally watching grass grow.
Last one that came to mind is In & Of Itself. Way different type of experience, but it is another unique and life-affirming movie about an artist. It's a film of a performance by storyteller and stage magician Derek DelGaudio. When I finished it, it felt like a hug

This was my first time trying a cover crop for weed suppression in the garden, and I think it's been a success!
My lazy method was to let some volunteer grass grow tall here over the winter and strim it when it had green seeds, around the end of March. Then I covered it with a tarp until it was time to plant beans in mid May. This spot previously had frequent mullein, herb robert, and grasses.

Absolutely. I was recently watching a documentary about Marion Stokes (Recorder) and it spends so much time focusing on the impacts of her astonishing archive project on her marriage, family, relationships, etc. On the one hand it is so good to see that included and on the other hand so annoying that it's only included because she is a woman 🙄

We're having False Spring or First Spring or whatever Pacific Northwest season makes March more pleasant than June, and I managed some garden puttering. Not pictured is the tip of that carrot, which got munched by the younger gardener on the way in.

I recently learned that licorice ferns (Polypodium glycyrrhiza) often live on bigleaf maple trees (Acer macrophyllum). The ferns come out this time of year when the maples drop their leaves and let the light through. I had always admired this kind of moss monster, but I am only now realizing they are almost all maples. 💚

Yes, feed the soil!
This summer I tried mulching between plants with cardboard, since I have so many packages all the time. A success, I think! Tomatoes in particular were very happy, and there were lots of bugs and worms at work. I threw compost and leaf mulch on top for the fall/winter plantings.

My very first harvest of #LemonVerbena (Aloysia citrodora) is somehow ready to dry. I only rescued this friend from the discount section at Canadian Tire a couple of weeks ago and haven't gotten around to repotting it, but it managed to transform from straggly to lush and fluffy anyway. On brand somehow-- a plant with very happy vibes.

So validating to see recommendations to study actual drugs and potential cures, guidance on how to design control groups for a very diverse group of sick people, and reminders to center people with severe ME by designing at-home trials.

There is a helpful paper about post-covid symptom timing by Patient-Led Research Collective in The Lancet, from back in 2021. Section 2.4.3 has these great graphs of when different symptoms showed up for people and when they got more and less severe.
Delayed feedback is really hard to make sense of. Matching myself to the graphs helped me figure out what was going on with me.

I’ve been working in public interest software since the late 1900s. Currently SO LUCKY to be employed building Indigenous language revitalization tools that are open source and built on data sovereignty.
