You can always (I'm sure, I'm not great at this) modify their improvement with client-side JS or CSS. But options are naturally better.
My bigger point not well made was that what Lauren saw as a "giant step backwards" (in yelly caps) and "amateur-land", and other needlessly sarcastic/caustic commentary against humans building a free software project was really an accessibility improvement and step forward for some of us.

It's alt text anyway, the idea is to be there as an alternative to the image. Most people will never change the text they don't need popping over the image they're looking at right now, they'll just continue to see it as an annoyance in the quality of Mastodon.
For me, pop-ups cause stress and distraction. If you want that, have an option to turn it on.

The "alt" icon only shows if the alt text is present, so there's no "might" there. Personally I prefer this as I got very annoyed and distracted by text boxes popping up over images just because they happened to scroll under my mouse pointer.

I recall an instance similar to this (from memory, years ago, may be wrong) where someone added something like "may not be used by the government of South Africa" as a condition, because it was during apartheid times.
Now it's not those times any longer, but the ZA government still technically can't use that code.
(I know it's not quite a "for a use" condition, but close.)
