Thanks for the fun read! Yes the world feels very uncertain, however, I think is a function of Western-style atomization going increasingly global, as much as it might be from any true economic and technological disruption.
Things feel so uncertain because so many people do not have networks, third-space communities, or extended family to call on for employment / economic opportunities. I’m presently looking to jump from my current company and despite what is said about this job market, I’m seeing traction with companies where I knew someone to refer me and companies that are local to my area, that despite being plenty large and established, lack the prestige of FAANG and FAANG adjacent companies, often because these companies operate in the real economy rather than the inflated digital one…
Further, I’m realizing that if I had been even more active in the local community over the past years, this process would that much easier. And this isn’t just about corporate employment, these trusted-human social connection networks are an almost singular source for generating new ideas, new companies, and new movements.
I think if more people committed to seeking out social and community integration in their lives, our present times would feel much less uncertain for them and others.

None of the tech industry layoff headlines are actually about AI. Every company isn’t going to “AI code its own software.” This a reasonable paring back from ZIRP/Covid. Honestly, given how beaten down Block’s stock has been, I’m surprised this did not happen several years ago already. AI is the ghost in the machine used to at once justify whatever executives are doing while also simultaneously suppressing white collar and specialized labor bargain power.
If we collapse interest rates again, these same companies will instantly ballon all over again, fulfilling their role as centralized public works purveyors and a pressure value outlet for a technically inclined meritocracy-aspirant petty bourgeois class who might otherwise become activated, perhaps to an extent that is troubling effective, into piracy, decentralized technological self-help, radicalized political agitation, etc, etc, etc.

While Citrini’s peice is framed as “doomerist” and AI-2027 is a framed more positively - both are ultimately Olympic-level exercises in masturbatory Magical Realism over purely imagined capabilities of AI.
Go and read (or have your clawbot summarize, to save your self the “cognitive load” of thinking, of course…) both and notice what is entirely missing. That would be ANY critical assessment of underlaying cost. These pieces, which apparently “sway global markets” now are predicated on consumer end AI services magically being free, for everyone, forever.
This is the foundational premise of the entire AI narrative that has taken over the global economy - cost doesn’t matter, or even further, THERE IS NO COST.
When the bill comes due, when VC fluff and private credit runs out, this is going to be an SPECTACULAR disaster.

I pay my local rancher in bitcoin at the farmers market. Once Bitcoin goes up again it will fully convince his wife. Then they will convince the farm. And eventually others at the farmers market will take notice. It will take time, and it will be beautiful.
Farmers markets are a huge opportunity for Orange pilling but there is also a lot of uncertainty, skepticism (good) and resistance still. It takes time (and money in the farmers market case) to build trust. I’ve succeeded with one vendor, hoping to orange pill a few more. But even one is a huge win.

Yutaro - This was great to read! I haven’t left the corporate world yet but I see a similar transition happening for me in the near future. I am wrestle with the uncertainty but in my deepest heart I’m looking forward to untangling myself from fiat incentives.
It is strange because I am working a “good job” in big tech, but big tech is going absolutely nowhere fast (or actively worsening) and right now AI is still at a nebulous enough place that it’s continues to feed a executive fantasy that AI will make all human labor worthless (ie they believe that they’ll somehow be able to secure infinite profits in an economy with no employment…).
That said, thank you for highlighting a really cool and creative use case for AI😂.

Well friend I think Trump is just as bad for Bitcoin as Biden was and as Harris would have been, but it different ways. Trump led many bitcoiners into complacency while a rolled out a fiat stablecoin agenda that is fundamentally designed to sideline and or capture Bitcoin. As the same time Trump as smeared his stink of open air grift shit all over Bitcoin with his meme coins and his son’s fake bitcoin mining company. These anti-bitcoin efforts will fail, as all state efforts fail, but has, at least for a time, given fiat financial interests far too deep a foothold in the Bitcoin narrative.
With Biden, the attacks on Bitcoin were more direct. And with Harris they may have been even more so. Under this regime though, which would also fail, you might have absolute insanity like unrealized capital gains taxes and price controls. But at the same time, far more people would be taking self custody. Far more people would be using Bitcoin as money rather than as a USD maybe-sometimes-NgU “risk-on equities correlated asset.” There would be less room for regulated fiat games on top of Bitcoin.
TrumpCoiners clapped and drooled because they thought Trump would bring “systemic legitimacy” to Bitcoin, cucking for the approval of the system they claim to want to see dismantled.

I agree. Hype and bullshit layered on top of none of this actually being cost justified. I.e. with fiat gamesmanship subsidizing the entire AI industry right now, users of all sizes are not exposed to reasonable true cost, therefore, AI today is far more likely to be applied (shoehorned) in ways that are malinvestments and misapplications rather than anything that is value accretive for anyone.

I think I understand your intent here but this feels a bit zero sum to me. In a finite money system the median income that open can mathematically have (as well a significant margin below this), MUST be enough. In this system, as far as prices are concerned, the billions of people with 100K or less sats become far more important than the 1M or less people who have 100M or more sats.

Yes, it is a generalization, but one that I also believe to be fairly universally applicable in this case. There is a certain philosophical underpinning here - essentially to believe is “machine intelligence” one must internal debase their assessment of human intelligence. I do not believe is “machine intelligence” and “artificial intelligence” is an oxymoron.
The map, not matter how rich and detailed and immersive, can never be territory. Similarly the tool is not the talent. Saying “the machine is so smart” is like saying “this calculator is good at Math” or “my POSCA paint pens are really good at art.” The machine or tool is an inert object outside of the human operator.
As to what nebulous and generalized “existential dangers” that AI may pose (note, AI people never make this specific, always generalized), perhaps there is not much that can be done other than actively opting out of engagement with these systems when you can. Thats what the individual can do.
Beyond that, I don’t think of “what should be done” (ie appealing to be centralized decision authority - as this the same thinkings that leveraged the fear of nuclear weapons to profane the blessing of nuclear power while only INCREASING the number of nuclear weapons in play) - but I do think it terms of what I think will happen.
And what I think will happen is this. OpenAI and Anthropic are AI service provider / hardware buyer duopolies that rest atop Nvidia as the hardware producer monopoly. OpenAI and Anthropic are perpetually insolvent and have no path to profitability - they are capital destruction machines fueled by fiat VC slush. Eventually the bill will come due and all services that are dependent on OpenAI or Anthropic will either be squeezed to death by cost increases or while die when OpenAI and Anthropic collapse financially. They may be bailed out by the government, but this will truly set us on the path we of realtime USD currency debasement, with the government bankrupt itself entirely.
SO, I think AI can only be a useful technology if it’s true costs are borne by the market around it. After the collapse of OpenAI and Anthropic (and general stock market value destruction), the costs of AI will not longer have “free money” lined up to paper over. Individuals and companies will have to operate their AI decentralized at the compute level. And this recognition of costs will ensure that AI, where is it used, will be used in a way that adds value for humanity.
Short of this AI is just another fiat malinvestment. The tool itself and fear of the tool will both be leveraged by people who bear not actual costs to attempt to lock in their control over others who are too lazy or immiserated to understand that they can opt out (though opting out has its own costs). They don’t actually have the resources to achieve this…unless of course they can conquer your mind first, as this is the ultimate force multiplier.

I think AI is a tool that will add value when operated in a truly decentralized fashion (ie the compute level) by individuals and companies. Running AI in this way will not allow its significant costs to be hidden by VC slush or subsidized by public funds, so it will be used only where is actually does add real value - in fact the realization of underlying costs will cause the market to actually seek out where AI add value rather and stuffing it into everything and then loudly claiming “humans are obsolete” because you need the next 100 Billion of other people’s money to keep the show going.
Without the recognition of the cost side of the equation (which can only be made possible by fiat, which is to say theft), AI is made into a bullshit technology to augment bullshit jobs, to further enshittify bullshit politics, and to distract and entertain bullshit people in bullshit societies.

He says that I’ve you’re not paying for premium ChatGPT “you’re already so far behind.” His advice to you “to survive what comes next” is that you run out and pay hundreds of dollar a month to OpenAI and upload confidential contracts and tax records and social security number!

Ppq.ai has already convinced me that AI has definite powerful use cases. I am simply not convinced that AI is a centralized monopoly technology. I’m thinking its value unlocks more at the bootstrapping and individual company level. Like companies are going to have to run their own models and inference or they’ll be squeezed to death by open AI / anthropic, or their AI tools will die when those entities are recognized to be unsustainable and irrecoverably insolvent.
