The real hard part comes later - you will be surrounded by people who's entire identity is fear, and they'll be the ones you have to impress to get a job or make a sale. They have built in radars to detect people who aren't afraid, and if you manage to slip past their barriers, then there's the office politics where they isolate and frame you for not being one of them.

This is from my bio textbook. I'm very happy it has moved on from the genetics... Oof, complicated. So the idea is this : if amino acids form during the star's formation, like while the hot disk cools into rocks and comets, then maybe we could just look at the light of any star and determine if its formation had the same process that results in amino acids, and then refine the search for extraterrial life by assigning probabilities to stars that they created amino acids based on their light profile.
Eh? Are they doing this? Idk. Anyways, its a great day to read stuff. ☕

I don't think the bio 1 class will get this far in the book. This is actually going into detail about specific genes and specific experiments. This book is enormous - two or three times the thickness of any of my econ books. I have an organic chem book too, and it seems more concerned with molecular geometry than genes, though maybe I just haven't gotten that far.

Signal transduction pathways are frankly pissing me off. Its fascinating, and I will need more info on it later, but right now the problem they solve appears utterly absurd.
Imagine (this is wrong, but imagine) you're trying to build a machine that copies and executes code - a cell. You would think you would need some kind of inverse model of the code to read it and execute it's instructions. Think, code and a compiler. The compiler is a model of the code, matching commands to sequences of assembly code. So in the case if DNA, you have the yuuuge problem that there's no fucking compiler.
With DNA, the map and the territory are one thing. Actually, its even more extreme - the map exists before the territory and the territory will modify itself if the map tells it to. And yet more extreme - if you change the spelling of a label on the map, the spelling of other labels also change. And simultaneously the territory changes. And the territory changes may be deterministic, but they are also complex in that outputs become inputs and so the final form is nigh impossible to predict with only 100% of all instructions known. This is absurd. Its also real... So the resolution to the problem of phenotypic expression from a single map/territory with no compiler is "signal transduction pathways" - changes in environment, which can include everything from the organism's own development stage to diet to the temperature of the air, trigger different gene sequences, and then those genes simply cause cells to make specific proteins and multiply/stop multiplying, and then that will eventually trigger another signal transduction pathway.
The problem is finding the pathways when mutations are random. This is absurd... Certainly almost all mutations are fatal, thats easy to say, but imagining this interplay between discreet and nondiscreet topologies and imagining the very large numbers involved and the number of generations that must be necessary to find some recursive system of signal pathways such that a gene can express a form **_and then turn the fuck off and not turn into a cancerous blob_** ... This is absurd... Surely we are the descendebts of an already dead universe, the time required being so unfathomable...

I love my new hobby... But also I'm exasperated with its jargon... I see no indication that it can do anything more than describe events, the actual mechanisms of which it still hasn't penetrated. For example, in one chapter my book defines homeotic and heterochronic gene expressions, which are genes that mark the beginning of spatial or chronological transcription, and it's certainly interesting - getting a leg to grow out of a drosophila fly's head is cool - but there doesn't appear to be any understanding of the mechanism by which it is actually done. They've found these relationships by destroying different segments of DNA, then noting what changes. But where's the **_actual_** information that describes phenotypic expression? DNA is a protein library ; geometry isn't in there. There's just no way DNA contains the density of information required for phenotypes...
What annoys me is how it appears to be trying to appear authoritative, as if it has all the answers, instead of putting the problem front and center (or at least giving a nod to it) and saying, "this is the mystery, bounty of great renown to whoever solves it!"

I'm both excited and horrified by the bots... Horrified for all the same reasons you listed, or at least alludes to, but still excited for a future in which they're actually useful. I like it. Err, I like it more than I dislike it. Its a net like. And I think most differences are contrived for the sake of maintaining teams.
When I look at Christianity and Islam, for example, I see teams which are exactly the same in every possible way, but which are determined to maintain their separation - why, who benefits? Each has a power in the center benefitting by maintaining enmity.
So, IMO, power itself is the problem. It doesn't matter if the power is on your team. A real radical would give away power if he has it, subvert it if its on his own team, and push anything which is falling.
But there's a dilemma : there are two extreme opposites which achieve the same goal. One is to defy the center by atomization - more teams approaches no teams. The other is to nullify the team aspect by unifying into one team, so that there's no "other." Both qualify as anarchism, which is how anarcho communism and anarcho capitalism can both claim anarchism. These extremes appear to be incompatible at a foundational level. IMO, the modern nation state tries to to both, and that's how it manages to piss off everyone. This tension, IMO, is what's driving our descent into police state.
Suppose the two sides did put aside their differences to fight the managerial center. Both can rightly see that center as representative of the other extreme that they've called a truce with, but in a world of flying pigs, maybe they call the truce and destroy the center. What then? They'll realize that that common enemy in fact was the unifying force that kept the peace between them. So if there's to be a peace between the communists and the propertyists, some new mechanism must be found to replace the managers. Can there be a gentlemanly agreement that each side gets territory and never violates the other? I doubt it, but such a peace would certainly require absolute freedom of movement between the territories, so if someone decides they prefer the other way if living, then they won't try building a state.

I think he's right. Everywhere in the world now, we see an ugly kind of architecture and art. I can imagine someone saying that the medieval art was joyous to defy their circumstances, but the refutation is the art that surrounds us now - art everywhere celebrates a common theme of ugliness, and architecture expresses only bold planes and all tries to approach brutalism without being too obvious.
But if you go even further back in time, the joy in art is even stronger - Pan dancing while playing his pipes, or Dionysus laughing while drunk and surrounded by satyrs. That kind of art pops out in more dimensions that the geometry of the sculpture...
Its like the present is the lowest point in some fall from grace.

Most of the bible is fabricated in ways that would offend modern sensibilities. I say that as a Christian, and I don't care if the whole crowd of pious imbeciles disagree. It was written by men, edited by men, whole sections added and removed, it plagiarizes other religions in some parts (especially Genesis), and then on top of all that, its not even understood, so what was writing all that even for...?
We don't need the OT at all, and its totally illogical to begin with. The NT is as fabricated as anyone could dare to imagine. Most of it was only even written as a response to Marcion's "heresy" - which, depending on who you ask could be anything, but it appears to me his real crime was putting a bunch of texts together into a Bible. Marcion did a bible, oh no, gotta do another bible to refute Marcion... Only maybe 1/3 of Paul's epistles can be linked to previous writing, and even that is still not source material.
It doesn't serve anyone to pretend this isn't the case. You can't be "more Christian" than another, in any case, but certainly not by believing falsehoods that masquerade as piety.

Huxley is talking about his observation that there are two versions of God being worshipped by people - the God in time, and the God in eternity - and the time worship causes cultures and ideologies to do violence. Very very worth reading! He shows how Marxism fits into the worship of time and justifies unspeakable violence and suffering on behalf of some imagined future good.

Woke up early, so naturally I start reading about ancient Egyptian stuff. Egypt + ☕ = 😺. Some cool jewels have surfaced :
Etymology of "nature" is a lie - dictionaries say its from French, and then from Latin. Liar liar pants on fire! Its from "neteru" in Ancient Egyptian. Prob will write more on this later.
"Mary" is originally an Egyptian word/name, meaning "beloved." It also had connotations of purity, so there was already the path to its catholic meaning, the Virgin Mother. The root was "mr" or "mer" and then in Hebrew they added "ya" to get "Miriam" which literally meant "loved by God." Isis and Mary are the same person - already knew that, but got a bit more clarity on usages.
The royal blue or purple is from the blue lotus. I remember learning in school that blue became the royal color because its hard to make, so scarcity. But that's really not true. Blue was originally associated with the spirit in Egypt because of the blue lotus, which you can get high from. In hieroglyphs, if something is painted blue, you immediately know that concept is spiritual or symbolic.
