Our Founder, @npub1vl7…f6g0 is stepping down from his position as CEO. He shared a reflection on his time building and growing Mastodon on our blog.

Mastodon 4.5 brings Quote Post authoring features to everyone. Note that you can manage whether or how your posts are quoted by others, both globally on the new Posting Defaults page, and individually on specific posts. You can also revoke the use of a post. In June, we proposed new Terms of Service for registered users of on our mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers. We did not do enough to consider the full impact of the terms, and the community was very clear that we needed to reconsider.

thanks for asking about the rationale behind the choice. We've experimented with both designs, and went with text above after talking with community leaders, who use quote posts positively to give underrepresented accounts more reach. In the end, we believe having the ability to opt-out of being quoted and being able to retract quotes after the fact are much stronger protections against abuse than the position of the text.

We’ve thought carefully about building this feature, and we hope it broadens your use of Mastodon!
However, you're in control: if you don’t want your content to be quoted, you can find the setting to prevent future quotes of your content under Settings -> Preferences -> Other (in Mastodon 4.4).

Mastodon 4.4 also contains the first part of our Quote Post implementation - display of incoming Quote Posts. Full support (including creation) will be part of the next version: Mastodon 4.5, coming later this year. We’re already hard at work on the next set of updates for that release.
