This one is specifically interesting because I derived my own explanation for this.
The Michelson and Morley experiment was unable to detect a medium through which light passes. The idea of the experiment was to bounce light back and forth, right and left at the same time, and if the earth is moving through the medium, and light speed in that medium is constant, you should detect a speed difference between the two axes.
They detected nothing, so Einstein argued there is no medium, light is not really a wave, it's also a particle, and it's not moving through a medium, it moves through Nothing..
But there were two other issues that needed to be resolved, and they were resolved via time dilation and Lorenz Contraction (the topic of that video)...
Lorenz Contraction doesn't really make any fucking sense, except that it happens to perfectly fix the experiment so you won't see any effect... But, if you imagine for a second that every orbiting atom is a little tiny Michelson and Morley experiment, and the spinning electrons are also limited to light speed, then you can just say "it contracts because the orbit is squeezed"...
So the explanation of why the experiment always produces a null result is because every atom in the device is also doing the same experiment, and when you add up the squeezed atomic orbits and the bouncing light and everything sums to zero - because of course it does.

Okay so Freenet 2.0 The Bad Parts:
It does state synchronization in 2 roundtrips. You don't send *everything* when synchronizing, but you have to send enough that the other end knows what patches it has that you don't have.
This is clearly not ideal when you're trying to synchronize (e.g.) gigabytes of tables. The best you can do is send:
* n: int32
* hash(updates[n])
* hash(updates[n-2..n])
* hash(updates[n-4..n-2])
* hash(updates[n-8..n-4])
* hash(updates[n-16..n-8])
...
But it's messy and not what Freenet was designed to handle. And just from looking at the code, I'm pretty much 100% certain that it stores contract state in memory. So if you're looking at doing a large table, you're going to be breaking it up into multiple contracts - which ends up being extremely wonky.

The problem: While numerous network transports exist (cjdns, Yggdrasil, I2P, Tor, etc), and numerous name services exist (Namecoin, ENS, Unstoppable Domains, PKT, etc), almost all federation takes place over ICANN+IP because we currently have no way to federate across network boundaries, and ICANN+IP is the only thing that everybody has.
I claim that there is no possible solution SIMPLER than SLUFI, except with central authority or PRECIPITOUS loss of security. Furthermore, I claim there is no possible solution that is more secure than SLUFI, except with something like a blockchain and a PRECIPITOUS loss of simplicity.
So while I do not think this protocol is complete (yet), I do think SLUFI is the only realistic starting point for reaching a solution to this problem.

It's funny because was not raised religious, so for me at an instinctive level, the idea of dying and meeting Saint Peter is kind of on par with the idea of dying and meeting Vishnu or something...
That said, to the extent Christianity teaches people not to be dumb, I fully recognize its utility.
So as much as I have difficulty imagining how it is to believe there's a fundamental truth which is Jesus, I have an even HARDER time imagining what it would be like to accept the baseline assumptions of Christianity (the soul, hell, etc), but to actively rebel against the teaching.

IT'S OUT, maybe my biggest blog post to date.
Ever since the recording industry capitulated ending the P2P War, internet freedom has been SO GOOD that research into decentralized networking has practically stalled. Throughout the Western World, you can just stand up a website and post almost anything.
And because of that, nobody has been particularly motivated to move off of centralized ICANN DNS, IPv4, and x509 Certificate Authorities.
Now, governments are thinking about changing that. And while the apocalyptic amount of force it would take to actually end the open internet is almost certainly beyond them, the force it would take to end the era of bad centralized protocols could almost be applied by accident.

I'm a millennial, but I'm kind of old enough to remember when the "don't leave anything to your kids" meme was actually being seriously discussed.
The argument was that if you leave money to your kids, it's just gonna spoil them and they'll become losers. This was definitely weaponized to make sure reasonably well-to-do boomers would never form any kind of dynastic power - but there is a kernel of truth to it.
Leaving wealth to the next generation, without turning them into loser trust-fund-babies, is HARD. It's one of, if not THE central concern of Old Money families. All of those weirdo elite private schools where they molest the kids and don't really teach them any useful skills - they're designed to instill in rich kids, if nothing else, that they MUST conserve the family fortune. And even so, it is STILL shockingly common for old money families to lose the family wealth and end up as weirdos with a weird backstory.
But just because it's hard doesn't mean it's impossible, and it doesn't mean it's not worth it.

This is something I think a lot of Americans don't understand about Europe.
In the US - particularly east coast - there's MONTHS of miserably hot weather, like weather that will kill you if you stay out in it too long.
In a large portion of Western Europe, there's probably about 2 or 3 heat waves spread across the summer, and the rest of the summer is quite cool, like cool enough that if you have an AC, you don't run it anyway... So people are lazy and they're like "oh I don't REALLY need that"

Beyond just abandoning computers, if you're trying to keep secrets you can improve your odds by putting most of your computing behind a firewall and blocking anything that isn't explicitly what that stuff is supposed to be doing.
The narrower the definition of what information is allowed, the better.
If you can completely airgap your main systems (cut them off from internet), that's even better. But even airgapping is not perfect, Stuxnet spread as a virus in order to get onto USB sticks that were plugged into Iranian (airgapped) computers and then hack them.
But if you're not as high profile as a nuclear program, airgapping works pretty well...
At the end of the day, computers really don't keep secrets all that well. But there's a way to leverage that - instead of being the one trying to keep secrets, it's better to be the one who is trying to expose the other guy's secrets. Computers love to leak, so if you like leaks then you're on the right side of technological history...

There's a really good way to make random numbers:
You make a pool of entropy, you take entropy from your environment (e.g. timing how long things take), and you hash it into the pool.
Then you use a hash function to read values out of that pool.
None of this is complex, it's not slow either, and it's how things have been done for decades.
Everyone pushing for mOrE SeCuRe random sources is to be considered with the greatest of suspicion.

Okay so these are lithium-air batteries, they pull oxygen from the air so they don't need to carry as much weight. Presumably they're heavier when discharged because they're carrying a bunch of oxygen with them.
The problem is impurities in the air poison the chemistry. So the challenge is getting the air perfect.
Currently there has been a lab demonstration of a 1.2kwh/kg battery with 1000 cycles of lifespan.
12kwh/kg is really just a theoretical maximum for the chemistry.
CATL is saying "this is the future", and since they're the biggest battery maker in ... the world (?) ... that probably means there's going to be a whole lot of R&D pushed at this.
So 12kwh/kg has not actually been shown by anyone, but the way battery density competition has been going so far, we should expect that batteries will cross over the 1kw/kg line in the decade. And given they're about 0.3 now, that's a big improvement already. Enough for short haul aviation.
By about 3 or 4 kw/kg, they're going to be competitive with jet fuel given the losses of a jet engine. At this point there will really be no reason not to electrify aircraft since fuel is dominant in the cost of flight.

Well, this company is claiming that their target is 75kwh per gallon of gasoline, and 1 gallon per day. If they can hit that then IMO they've proven that air-scavenging is not entirely ridiculous.
It's certainly not going to be as effective as shoveling wood, coal, heavy fuel oil, or literally any other form of carbon into a gasifier - but ... all of that stuff costs something. What it costs depends a lot on where you are. If the cost of burnable stuff exceeds the cost of the electricity needed to scalp that 1/4 of 1% of CO2 out of the air, guess which process wins...

Someone is doing the methanol process. They are scavenging the air for CO2 - I had written this off as too inefficient, but it actually makes sense because then you don't need to fuck around with supplying it with carbon.
If you're somewhere like in the arctic with airplane and snowmobile access only, being able to manufacture fuel is kind of a big deal.
The downside of all of this is there's a lot of chemistry going on here - multiple stages of catalysts that can end up getting ruined if impurities get deposited on them.
I can't see something like this working for more than a few months before it needs some kind of cleaning, changing of catalysts, maintenance / service / etc.

That may be so, but every country where those people become majority / government becomes a copy-paste of Zimbabwe.
And in Zimbabwe, the boss man would never have been able to start his company. We all know that, there are no great international companies from Zimbabwe.
But boss man doesn't mind turning the country into Zimbabwe in order to make a buck off of cheap labor - just like he doesn't mind dumping chemicals in the river to save a buck on making products...

I need to work on cjdns OpenWrt, I'm not sure it's currently building. The objective was not to do cjdns and PKT, thought the idea for this device came from when I was looking for cheap/capable devices for PKT.
At this point it's basically just a big endian MIPS OpenWrt computer - but it's cheap.

Mailed out the first GS3101 today. Is this something anyone would be interested in buying?

256M flash
1x 2.4Ghz wifi
1x usb 2.0
1x gigabit ethernet
3x 100mb ethernet
Fiber port and phone port but no drivers for those yet.
Standard 12v barrel power supply
I can do 7$ for the unit alone, USB serial adapter and power supply -> more.
Shipping is brutal though...

I wasn't shitting on steam, I'm sure they've got it figured out - and if flatpack is like docker - which it seems that it is, it would be embarrassing if that didn't work.
I was just saying installing nix, last I tried it like a decade and a half ago, it was hell.

I guess theoretically nix could be easy because users are never supposed to be screwing with package definition files...
But IDK, I remember it was super annoying for some other reason.

Yeah so each app carries an entire system with it.
It's based on the assumption that the underlying system is totally fucked - which sadly is the only safe assumption you can make.
But it only makes a blast shield to protect one desktop app from a fucked system, it doesn't do anything to unfuck the system itself.
