Just get the classic old school snap traps. All other options are too cruel. Poisons drive them out (by making them incredibly thirsty) if you worry about them in house but can poison anything that eats the corpses. If you go the snap trap route it's quick, clean and safe any you know you actually got one so it doesn't linger on you mind.

I haven't played it in years, like turn of the millennium years but i do remember the butterfly pokemon having a sleep inducing skill that i leaned on heavily to get me through most of the game. If you can catch one or one of the pod thingies and evolve it it might help a fair bit especially for grinding up your magikarp. Unless the rare candy dupe glitch is still a thing....

I'm still a bit funny about food in a way. I have a window of appetite of about 10-15 minutes after food is plated up and after that if it's been served and unfinished it's waste to me. If it's still in the cookware it's good to be boxed up and refrigerated for another day.
It never tastes as good as is does freshly baked, though some fish dishes improve with a day or two sitting in the fridge.
