did:nostr is very easy to understand. As you say the nostr key is good enough to be used as identity, and that's exactly what did:nostr does. Why do you think did:nostr is hard to adopt, it's basically trivial. The nostr message protocol is neat, but the identity piece is the value and did:nostr focuses on that. Both are complementary. Eventually everyone will adopt it and say it was obvious 😂

Maybe. But, for example, pubkeys in the bitcoin curve are max 34 bytes. People use large fake pubkeys as vectors for abuse. Whether we should clean that up or not, or if there are trade-offs, is a good question. Personally the OP_RETURN size is the thing that I think is too large. Both Satoshi and Nick Szabo have warned about it, so maybe data reduction is inevitable long-term. If that is the case, maybe it's better to add data reduction to the next fork, if it can get consensus.

1. The mistake is that it was merged too soon, without community conensus. So now governance has become a central point of failure.
2. Dont put images in the block chain, put a reference to them instead, and store them off-chain. Alt. narratives are red herrings.
3. This change increases the attack surface, with unclear consequences. That is particularly bad when securing $2 trillion of users savings.
4. Sensible heuristics can limit or make more expensive these non-standard transactions, which is one of the smart things Satoshi figured out.
Still not too late to fix.

Correct! There are a few other useful things in Knots, but that's the main one, right now. It's a 100% compatible drop-in replacement that "just works". You dont have to redownload anything. It's a great choice if you think bitcoin is money.

Personally I remain a fan of core (and knots) but this PR was merged too early, and is a (rare) mistake from the maintainers. Still time to target v31 and turn a lose-lose into a win-win. FOSS tends to work best when you listen to the community.

Good news! After a helpful discussion with the W3C Credentials Community Group, we’ve aligned on a verification method that works cleanly with did:nostr and the Verifiable Credentials stack:
w3c-ccg/community#254 (comment)
I’ve already patched the did:nostr draft to reflect this.
What this unlocks
1. Production-ready reference implementations
2. Compatibility with the wider W3C Credentials ecosystem
3. A straightforward path to issuing industry-standard credentials (badges, awards, driver’s licences, etc.) over Nostr
4. The ability to sign and exchange JSON payloads between Nostr services (relays optional)
It’s a nice step up in standards alignment and Nostr functionality.

Been having a lot of fun exploring smart contracts over Bitcoin. They only launched last week, and wallets are already popping up. One wallet’s chat room has 40,000 people in it, and that’s just one wallet! All this without needing a Bitcoin fork. Feels like we might be at the start of something big.

This quote is true. Nostr was actually the 3rd attempt to add a social layer to bitcoin, the first 2 tries were largely ignored, and in fact probably scaled better. Things can take a long time to notice. Same is true for the best technology today. Smart contracts on bitcoin, launched last week, and mostly ingored, will create the world's first digital free market where humans and machines can participate together.

No, that's ordinals. They are bad. The block chain is not cloud storage. Instead of spamming the block chain with images, you can put a pointer (like a short url) to them. Smart contracts are a full verifiable commerce layer on top of bitcoin. Just as companies and firms have a currency they use. A full digital free market can be built on top of bitcoin. The first fair and open free market the world has seen. It's a big idea.
