the Fediverse, in abstract, means pretty much all of these things, but when people are referring to a concrete "the Fediverse", they first and foremost mean *this* network characterized by running on ActivityPub on the open, public internet (as opposed to smaller bubbles running over Tor and such), which happens to also uniquely specify a group of people (who use this network), a set of principles about moderation and federation and accessibility, and to a lesser extent, a culture, but the culture is much more subjective and more of a gradient across the network. the group of people are often more precisely referred to as "fedizens" and the principles might be called something like "fediquette". but "the Fediverse" refers to the network as a whole, containing all of these elements.

the Arch User Repository package `alvr` has been orphaned, then adopted by a threat actor who immediately updated it with an infostealer. If you have [this package](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/alvr) on your system and updated it recently, you've been compromised. This is not a result of any upstream compromise; it's just that one AUR package. in particular, the `alvr-bin` sister package seems to be fine.
[here's the relevant thread for `alvr` from the Arch Linux mailing list](https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/[email protected]/thread/2LGBF2AZBPVCCY4VTN6DOVUNNBURFJ2J/). `alvr` seems to be the first package compromised and/or the first one that was noticed. it was updated maliciously at `2026-06-11 13:53:45 UTC` ($[unixtime 1781186025]) and reverted approximately 3-4 hours after that.

they all share in common that they will install the `atomic-lockfile` package from NPM (so, [here's a live link to the actual malware](https://www.npmjs.com/package/atomic-lockfile). do not install that). they were all orphan takeovers. as far as i can tell, all of the ones i linked have been reverted to known safe versions. including `alvr`.
this is an **infostealer**, meaning it exfiltrates sensitive data from your system such as login credentials. removing the malware will not undo the damage. moreover, **uninstalling the malicious package will not remove the malware** because it persists as a systemd service that stays on your system indefinitely.
it executes as an npm preinstall script, and the npm package is installed by the AUR packages. this means that **simply installing the malicious versions of any of these packages will compromise you**. it does not require you to do anything more afterwards. again, **the malware persists if you uninstall the malicious packages**
to check if you've been compromised, look in `/etc/systemd/system` and `~/.config/systemd/user` for a recently added .service file with a random name. that's the persistence mechanism and the most obvious mark that you've been compromised.

this is an arguably cringe memory that is fond:
when i was like 12 or something, i was playing Fortnite a lot. they just added a Creative mode and i somehow gathered a group of mostly adults to play with and i was the "boss". we were gonna play hide and seek so i was explaining the rules. but like, i was a child, so i was mostly just making the rules up as i was explaining them. sensible rules but it's not like i had anything prepared. it was not based on experience from hosting similar games with other groups .
i ended up contradicting myself. and someone interjected, and asked for clarification along the lines of "but you said $X. now it's $Y? which is it actually?"
i don't know how i felt in the moment or what i responded with. i know we still played hide and seek and i had a good time.
in hindsight, i look fondly on this because these people who probably had better things to do were (a) playing with me and treating me as an equal, (b) allowing me to have authority, even though i was clearly bad at it. and (c) actually listening to me and caring about what i had to say, not just pretending or whatever.
they were nice to me. even though i was probably a bit annoying. like, i probably would not want to play games with an annoying bossy kid who insists they be in charge of the lobby. but these people did. i don't know who they are, or what their names were, but i'm grateful to them for spending time with me.

[Whisper Pair](https://whisperpair.eu/) is a vulnerability in most accessories implementing Google Fast Pair.
- Attacker can pair remotely when the accessory is not in pairing mode. Therefore, attacker gets to control the media playback and listen on microphone, when in range, trivially, with zero interaction from the owner.

like anyone telling you "kernel level anti cheat doesn't work on Linux" is straight up lying to you. it literally can exist. nothing is missing from Linux.
should it exist? probably no. it's a terrible idea. please, just do server side validation and don't send the client stuff the player shouldn't know. kernel anti cheat is absolutely an anti-feature
but can it exist? yes!! you can even make it vaguely trustworthy by open sourcing it, without compromising the integrity of the anti-cheat system!!!
the only reason these games don't run on Linux is because the developers are actively preventing you from doing so. they could literally either port it to Linux and keep their shitty model , or simply remove this anti-feature and let proton do its magic.

honestly why don't they make kernel anti cheats open source? or at least, source available?
they literally rely on hardware attestation to prove that you're running the correct kernel module and nothing else. this is why you can't virtualize them or emulate them. it needs secure boot and a TPM and your VM won't have valid keys for that.
like. you fucks. assuming your software is robust (which it generally is! because, cheaters in these games often rely on HARDWARE level cheating;!!), you could literally publish the source code, let us build from source, and run it on Linux *without* needing to load arbitrary proprietary kernel code.
adding attack surface in kernel space is still a terrible idea, but at least you'd know the kernel module isn't *literally designed to be malicious and actually harmful*. but currently, with proprietary kernel level anti cheats on windows as they exist today, you do need to simply trust the developer. wtf

I'd like to note that this previous reply is perhaps overly optimistic? by "doesn't brush off my request" I meant "feels like they actually read the bolded phrases in my request". the most infuriating part is how slow they are at responding. they seem to be sending no more than one message per working day. this gives the illusion that they're thinking at all. and then the response I get is like... just a copy+paste of the previous response??
it's been more than a week. they have sent exactly one (1) message that feels like it had any thought put into it. and that one felt like a genuine misunderstanding! and then they're just ignoring me?? what the fuck.

i'm pretty sure it's not technically a license violation because like, the GPL predates widespread use of the internet, so source code must only be available "upon request". the easiest way to implement that is "upon HTTP request" but sending as an attachment in response to human<->human communication is fine too i guess.
anyways so i contacted them and i'm not sure the rep fully understands the implications of GPL. i explained in no uncertain terms that "you are **required** to publish the latest source code to version 2.3.7 of the Lovense OBS toolset" and then they just responded along the lines of "Yeah. We're not providing the source code currently. We recommend using the pre-compiled Toolset 2.4.7 instead". i then reiterate that this is exactly why they **must** provide the source code. i also explained why the binaries won't work for me at all (which is irrelevant as this is a legal matter). and they just. sent a copy+paste of their previous response? so i clarified again "**you have a legal obligation to provide the source code**" and now they have "assigned a dedicated specialist to handle your case personally" who will "contact [me] very soon". i hope the specialist knows what the GPL is.

a fun description I've heard of the phrase "political" is that it mostly describes things people disagree on.

I , uh, really don't understand why it's even possible to add that as a flake attribute. because it's just straight up not useful. in any properly configured nix system, it *will* be ignored, unless ran as a trusted user (== root privileges; note that on NixOS this is stronger than `@wheel` because a trusted user can just overwrite the sudo binary and reboot. no password needed). and this is not a bug, because trusted public keys do indicate absolute trust. they really do actually *need* to be nontrivial to add.

I realize that when storing sound it's incredibly impractical to have spatial data . but when playing it back, why are we always limited to some set amount of audio channels?
like, 3D games almost always have spatial audio: everything eminates from a point in the world relative to the camera.
why does every game have the option for "Mono / Stereo / Surround Sound 5.1 / Surround Sound 7.1 / Dolby Atmos Whateverthefuck"
why do the game engines have to flatten the audio.
why don't audio servers just support spatial audio and let the games directly convey spatial information?

My current solution is to use Fastmail, which only requires a phone number. I have a `[email protected]` address, and used that to acquire a domain. Then, the domain is dependent on that email, is dependent on my phone number, is dependent on my legal identity.
This is, realistically not an issue, since I was going to use Fastmail anyways. Still, I'd love to skip this step and NOT require an initial email under someone else's domain.

the parameters are this:
- Let's assume I DO NOT have an email address.
- I do however have a bank account, established in person. My bank account does not require an email address. This gives me access to BankID, which is a strong authenticator that binds to my legal identity.
The bank account is already undeniably mine.
In addition to this, separately from above:
- It's fine to use a phone number. I don't currently own my phone number, but Telia allows me to acquire one "from scratch", like BankID, without needing BankID. I can also tie it to BankID. Eventually, I will transfer my phone number to my own account, but until then I can treat it as if I own it.
I wish to obtain an email address that I own. To do so, first I'd like to acquire a domain for that email address. I don't want to have an email address on a domain I don't own.
Those are the parameters.
- No email address
- Yes BankID
- Yes phone number
