I think if we’re honest with ourselves, the “service” most reporters provide on social media is entirely self-serving. A one-way firehose of signal boosting and self promotion.
“Look at me! I wrote this story. Click on it!”
And then you ask them a question, or have a correction, and nobody reads it, because Wired doesn’t care about building a community, just reaching a consumer. It’s fire and forget.
We already have a tool for that, it’s RSS. What value does reposting a link here provide?

It’s been a weird couple days; I keep running into this talking point that “journalists won’t use Mastodon unless we incentivize engagement farming”.
Meanwhile I’m having a *great* experience here, because I use it to— I dunno— actually talk to people and form relationships?
I reject the premise that mastodon isn’t useful for reporters. I think it’s more accurate that modern news orgs use social media in purely extractive ways.
You might get more reporters that way, but you won’t like them.

My favorite part of the plan is that they clarify that yes, you do need to talk to strangers, they’re not so scary. It attempts to guide shy attendees through the process of making friends with randos.
Again, I feel like this is in direct response to cynicism about protests like No Kings being performative.
Frankly, if you meet your people and do anything together in the future, I’d call that closer to antifascism than where we started.

There’s a lovely xylophone band on the ground level.
They’ve gotten a couple of hecklers since I’ve been standing here, unfortunately. They dealt with it as gracefully as could be done. One guy, wearing camo, could be heard yelling “you forget where you come from. Where do YOU come from” as he left.

Some pre-gathering photos should be appropriate. So here’s what they apparently mean by the neighborhood sorting. In the distance you can see signs for North Shoreline, East Side, etc.
What caught my eye is the construction. The orange block lettering, suspended on netting, is the style of a specific local organizer: The Backbone Campaign.

There have also been some program changes that I didn’t expect. With the exception of AG Nick Brown, who helped open ceremonies at Cal Anderson, I’m told there are no elected official speakers.
According to the Indivisible media folks, this was a “deliberate choice”, although they didn’t elaborate on the criteria.
If I had to wildly speculate (which I don’t, but I will) I imagine that last years invitees suddenly pivoting into campaign speeches probably influenced this.
So, a welcome change.

Here’s an interesting logistical change from last year; today’s main event, which will be held after the march at Seattle Center, is focused on connecting attendees on a per-neighborhood basis to each other.
I think this is a great idea, at least in theory, which seems pointed at the usual “protesting is performative” cynicism.
I’m on my way ahead now to see how that’s going to work.

Second is a stunning hand-made drag ensemble by Patty Trauma. Red white and blue, Trump-evoking makeup, and a cake— of the “let them eat” variety— shaped to resemble a machine, probably an old timey voting machine. It had a strip of “I voted” stickers coming out of it.
No photos for Fedi yet because I haven’t been able to do my usual consent/redaction cleanup, but you bet I did get some.

Highlights so far; whenever I ask anyone what the most impressive art they’ve seen is, they all unanimously point me to one of two places.
The first is a group of that has made a Statue of Liberty costume, which is standing at least twice the highest of the folks wielding it. Eavesdropping on the crowd, I can already hear that folks are using them as a meeting landmark. lol!

At this point, I believe there’s more value in being loud and public about resistance.
The legal system already does not function, specifically for me. I have no reason to believe that the Constitution will protect me, or that plausible deniability will keep me out of jail. At this point, if the fash wants to put me there, they will reverse engineer a reason to do so, or even do so illegally.
But if others see me making noise, they might decide to push back, too. Corporations certainly aren’t!

It may be inadvisable to put this in writing, but I’m serious about this: if I am ever required to put up an age-gate, I intend to defy that law.

As we feared, all previous versions of #Affinity have been deprecated and replaced with a new freemium version— and a funnel to Canva, which acquired developer Serif over a year ago.
Up-sales are AI features, and the functional, pay-once versions have been removed from stores for Apple products. No details on how long the license activation services for V1 and V2 will remain, so even if you bought it, someday you won’t be able to install it.
Was my favorite tool, I’m devastated. :(

I’m just watching all of these clearly motivated “Newsom 2028” PR pieces, trying to manufacture this thing, and I simply refuse.
I can’t help but notice that in these vote-blue-no-matter-who situations, compromise always seems to mean *me, specifically*. Whatever time my community buys you tends not to be spent wisely.
At a certain point it is no longer my responsibility to pick up the pieces or clean up the mess of others, I would rather find somewhere else to live.

Just in case there’s reporting later about resistance (which most of the branding and marketing and some of the shirts they’re selling still say), he clearly doesn’t feel that’s the case now.

Inside the gate, there are large “Let Us Worship” tents (the broader movement name rather than the bespoke “revive in 25” branding).
There’s a lot of merch penned by Feucht, as well as a few other names I recognize from various church group staffing pages in the network.
Note the DVD of “Superspreader”, presumably about the Covid-19 pandemic. Feucht’s rise to prominence began during lockdown, which Feucht posed as an affront to his religious liberties.

One interesting conversation I had with an officer was that the fences are here because “as you know, violence happened last time”. She was being very polite so it took every bit of self control not to ask her to clarify who was the actor in that instance.
(For the record, I know the answer. Video taken by Seattle gay news in May appears to depict SPD attacking disproportionately and unprovoked).
This time there are TWO air gapped rows of fences, which is probably for the best for all parties.

One oddity; the private security firm does not have a name of their firm on their uniform. I asked one of them which company was handling security, and he ignored me.
Pressed again, the interaction went like this:
“You’ll have to ask someone”
“I’m asking you”

“Great, which shade of blue?”

“You mean SPD?”
“Yes I mean SPD.”
“They told me to ask you specifically.”

On arrival at Gas Works; I confirmed with members of SPD that the event has a private event permit. The city has pre emptively put in time, place, and manner restrictions thusly;
Individuals who are not protesting are permitted to walk in, but a private security company has discretion on whether to remove people.
There is no “do not cross” line for the general public or the press at this time.
Sean Feacht has arrived and is taking an interview, wearing a green jersey that says “Jesus is king”

The common remark from folks that I talked to was that they’re glad they came to this event and not Gas Works; genuinely this one was 100% joy. I think if you didn’t know what this was in anticipation of, you wouldn’t even know Feucht was in town.

Folks have put up signs warning attendees of the grift. The ones with Feucht specifically are often scribbled out, which is in line with my previous observations. They want social media attention, but drawing attention to the church’s (alleged) misconduct seems to be the one thing that gets to them.
The call to minimize signal boosting on socials is good practice, too!

This initiative comes at an absolutely terrible time; as the GOP flirts with the idea of tracking pregnancies over state lines to criminalize abortion; eugenicist RFK threatens constructing an autism database; and the rest of the clown show seeks to eradicate transgender people.
Add to that the assembly-line problems that doctors— especially under Amazon— already have, and this is a recipe for disaster. It’s physically, literally dangerous.
Needless to say I will be unplugging it if I find it.

My doctor’s office just asked me if I consented to an AI scribe taking session notes. (Obviously I said absolutely not and over my dead body).
I am physically incapable of minding my own business so I asked for details. They confirmed that means the rooms are capable of recording now, but assured me that it is “completely deleted” in a “timely fashion”.
I’m with One Medical. So that means the steward of that data is AMAZON.
I am utterly horrified.

But here’s the thing you’re actually interested in; the charges.
The most common argument of the defense attorneys (of which there were two between them) was that the charges lacked sufficient detail.
They read out portions of the police reports and they were quite vague. In almost all cases, they lacked a clear subject or victim.
“A phone was smashed”, but not whose phone or who did the smashing. “An officer was pushed off a bike”, but no claim as to who.

The bail amounts that the state initially requested were all quite high. For the protestors, the highest was $100k; the judge agreed that was exorbitant and reduced it to $20k.
I’m unsure if that’s standard procedure; it seemed to be true of all cases (I heard at least three hours worth of unrelated cases, and those all started very high as well). In most cases bail requests were slashed to 1/10 of the original ask.

Update on the Cal Anderson hearings in #Seattle:
We got out about an hour ago. I was not permitted to take notes or record (long story, mildly frustrating), so we’re going to have to go off of my memory.
The first two protestors had their charges immediately dismissed without the need for a hearing.
The court determined that the rest had probably cause and those cases will proceed. By my count two of those will have to post bail; the rest were released on recognizance (so, without bail)

I was curious what a TikTok user might see if they made a fresh account. I provided no preferred content categories, and did not interact with any video in any way except the skip them.
In my first fifteen minutes, I received:
9 manosphere “inspiration” videos
The official accounts of Tucker Carlson and Vivek
2 clips from each Fox News, and tabloids New York Post and Metro
1 “America first” rando
1 Copaganda vid of “cool” new police robots

Attended the hearing today for State of Washington v Trump. You’ve probably heard by now but the judge agreed that Trump’s attempt to ban trans healthcare indirectly through federal funding appropriations is likely unconstitutional.
The DOJ lawyers fucked it up in a big way. You could hear the judge getting annoyed with their incompetence.
I’ll have a more in depth article sometime tomorrow, need to review my notes and the transcript.

Since the 20th of this year, the same thing has been playing out in slow motion. And yet we seem paralyzed as a nation.
The fascists are fucking *memeing* about it our inaction, our supposed powerlessness. From the article:

I remember where I was during the insurrection. Like a lot of you, I was at work— in my kitchen, sheltering in place from a mismanaged pandemic.
I was glued to a thread on Slack, as my colleagues posted videos of the attack. In that thread, all pretense of normalcy had been dropped. Click one screen back, and it’s business as usual. Clients, emails, assignments.
Do you remember how weird that felt? To answer emails while our world burned?

Hey so uh, I’m just going to name the thing. January 6th is happening again.
An unelected oligarch and his mostly unsupervised, unaccountable friends have essentially barricaded themselves inside of a government building to make unknown changes, which have not been budgeted for or disclosed.
And we don’t have to play dumb, they’ve already told us they explicitly want to overthrow and unmake our democracy.
We have to do something.

Like a lot of #trans folks, I'm anxious about what life will look like for us after Inauguration Day.
I made a document to help my partner explain to her company why we might need to flee the country within the next few months. It includes sources to get the uninitiated up to speed on pending threats to #lgbtq rights.
Apparently a few folks in our network found it helpful for structuring their own conversations with loved ones, so I decided to just release it.

It reminds me of the recent Smithsonian story about corporate interests in undersea manganese harvesting, and the cynical side of me assumes this is why government bodies such as the NSF would be interested in funding it.
According to the original paper, they provided some financial support in the form of a DMREF grant, for research that “accelerates the materials discovery-to-use timeline”.

Breaktime!
My friends wanted to play #DND, and were interested in #Strixhaven, specifically. The module turned out to be pretty disappointing, so I've been rebuilding it from scratch. I'm calling it Fixhaven.
I have two different groups; it's been about six months, roughly nine sessions apiece, and it's been really interesting to playtest material with drastically different teams and roleplaying styles.
Good experience, lots of fun, also they're out of their minds. A thread.

On a hunch, I took an Uber to an address next door to the salon I intended to visit and the fare was about $5 cheaper.

So am I to understand that a full 38% of my revenue may now be siphoned off by Patreon and Apple, neither of whom contribute in any way to the creation of my work?
And that this is because Patreon wants to have an iOS app, which I do not need, do not benefit from, did not exist when I selected them as my payment processor, and cannot opt out of?
