New Release! Routstr Core v0.4.4: Reliable Billing & Robust Streaming
Major Changes:
- **More Accurate Cache Pricing:** Cached input tokens are now billed at their real, per-vendor rates across direct upstreams (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and more) instead of a flat guess. Cache prices are configurable, so operators can tune them per model.
- **Reliable Mint Swaps:** Foreign-mint swaps now retry using the fees the mint actually charges instead of trusting a stale `fee_reserve`, and the NUT-02 input fee is deducted when crediting trusted-mint top-ups.
- **Robust Streaming for All Providers:** A new buffer-based SSE parser handles streamed responses for every supported provider
- **Lightning Invoice Top-ups (RIP-08):** You can now create and top up API keys directly with a Lightning invoice.
- **Hardened Child Keys:** Child key balance deduction.

That platform isn't well maintained actually, it has also been unlinked on our website. I highly recommend using Routstrd with Hermes. It has auto topup built on NWC and it also uses a local cashu wallet. :)

The way routstrd works is, it receive cashu tokens via lightning and stores the sats in a local cashu wallet. Your funds should all be there. Where are you trying to use Routstr?

1. Dev Cut:
A default 2.1% protocol fee is added to all paid requests to fund Routstr development and is auto-paid to the Routstr lightning address.

2. Node Management Cli:
A dedicated admin token can be created for managing your node via Routstr Cli.
Hand the Cli to your agent and it can manage the node for you (add upstreams, rotate keys, check balances, etc.):

Routstr nodes now periodically share combined usage stats on Nostr.

2. Child Keys:

3. Admin Dashboard Redesigned:
Now it's slicker with fewer bugs. Thanks to @npub1u37…w8vy our UI wizard. Helping you manage your models and upstreams better.

We are almost done with a beta version of Routstr SDK (https://github.com/Routstr/routstrd), this will allow us to remove the need for Cashu balance on Routstr and api key balance.
We can build a system where you enter you Alby LNURL into Routstr to periodically receive refunds to it. And when needed it'll automatically pull from your NWC. This will eliminate the need for keeping balance for longer than necessary with Cashu/nip-60.

Yes, we have our nip-60 wallet in our chat app. It serves a very good purpose of a wallet that can live on any app, any cli, or anywhere you have javascript.
It's not a solution looking for a problem. If it wasn't for NIP-60, we coudln't have built our chat app that you can use on multiple devices.

Yes, I get how it is confusing for people not used to Lightning/Cashu/NIP-60. We'll work on improving this UX.
We have thought about NWC being the primary source of funds. But it'd mean there's more delay as every transaction is an NWC -> Cashu -> Swap and also, the way pay per request works right now requires the current set up because for any model you're sending more than what it'd cost, like 2100 sats for GPT-5.3-Chat and you'll get 1950 sats back as you just spent 150 sats. This requires a wallet.
Also, the reason why you signed Nostr events there is because we use a nip-60 wallet in the chat app, which stores your cashu in Nostr relays. This makes the app/balance available on multiple devices.
We'll work on abstracting away all of this complexity from the user. cc: @npub1u37…w8vy
Sorry about such a delayed response, I'll setup my agent to check Nostr for mentions of this account (I check my personal). I've been busy these past few days working on Routstr SDK (https://github.com/Routstr/routstrd) a daemon that runs on your machine and integrates itself with OpenCode, OpenClaw, etc. The benefit is that if one node goes down it automatically switches to the next one. And also that different nodes are better for different models. With built in Nostr features.

we don’t have a privacy policy because we don’t store/read any data, you can check the source code
maybe we should just add it to say that
the benefit over open router is that the payment layer is completely anonymous so even if a malicious provider collects data, he doesn’t see any users so every request is separated and also can’t be linked to any particular person except you put precisely identifying information into your prompt
we’re also working on a local version that prechecks your requests and straps out identifying information automatically

to start a routstr provider you need to run the docker compose in the repository so you can git clone and build yourself or you pull the container from ghcr and run it, you also need to setup some environment variables for the settings so you can check the .env.example in the repository.
no personal mint is required you can choose mints that you trust, by default minibits

Announcing Routstr Core v0.1.0: Come Run Routstr Nodes with Us
With this stable release, anyone can run Routstr nodes and help decentralize AI access to anyone, anywhere on earth!
Come run a Routstr node and serve models from OpenAI, Anthropic, x-ai, Google, Replicate, or OpenRouter (charges 5% extra) to anyone on the open internet and earn Bitcoin via Cashu/Lightning.
With v0.1.0, we made Routstr incredibly stable, but this is still a Beta version. If you come across a problem, we’d appreciate it if you report the bug to us on our Github.
Along with making Routstr more robust, we added these new features to Routstr:
1. Multiple Cashu Mint Support: Users and nodes don’t need to use the same mint
2. Multi-Currency Support: Sat and msats are both supported right now
3. Pay per Request with X-Cashu Headers: Send a Cashu token with enough balance and get the change back along with the response
4. Admin Dashboard and Withdrawals: A simple dashboard to look your and your users’ balances, more updates coming

Yes please do! Currently the marketplace might not be efficient enough to utilize irregular proxies but in future you will be able to set a low price and traffic will balance even if you have irregular uptime

We made a bad decision: Running our own Nip60 implementation. its causing our production environment to run instable. Maybe you experience some issues with routstr in the the recent weeks, we lost funds, early adopters did, we are really sorry.
Its not a problem of cashu, its not a problem with nostr, we are just so early.

there is no intermediate, the routstr chat app provides you a local running cashu wallet in your browser, we don’t host a server with accounts

routstr itself does not accept lightning if you did a top up then the cashu mint created an invoice, most likely minibits which is the default in our cashu wallet
also just tested this and all works normal so not sure what exactly went wrong :/

- centralized
- only support shitcoins
- explicitly no bitcoin
- marketplace only for "partners"

there are multiple ways to implement routstr
using api keys from the setting in the chat app is the easiest and similar to ppq
using a cashu wallet and cycling tokens for every request is the best for privacy and self custody but more complicated, we’ll release an sdk soon

pricing with LLMs is unpredictable before you make the request since the model will dynamically decide how long your answer will be so we need to charge the full amount upfront to not get scammed and lose sats
