Last Notes npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I think this is one of the parent black vultures. #Georgia #birding #Nature #Vultures https://cdn.masto.host/dicecamp/media_attachments/files/116/943/526/565/769/958/original/3d98a2cce8f93e0c.jpeg npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Man, this episode of a podcast I don’t listen to very often, is riveting! It is a major information dump. https://www.alieward.com/ologies/capsicumology #Peppers #Gardening #Podcast #Botany #HotPeppers #scoville #NewMexico https://cdn.masto.host/dicecamp/media_attachments/files/116/919/488/124/465/324/original/819bba9ac54314e9.png npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut When I was in Maine, I loved to go watch the alewives run. I’ve seen a river that is 50 feet across and 2 to 6 foot deep with Alewives so thick in it you could not see the bottom. https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBq1gB That’s my album of some of the pictures that I took npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I’m going to splurge and see it Friday matinee npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut If you are growing bell peppers, here’s something to remember. If you pick them while they are still dark green, then you will get pepper after pepper after pepper. If you let them turn yellow or red or whatever their ripe color is then the plant will stop producing. That’s why it’s pretty common to see yellow and red bell peppers priced just a little bit more than the dark green ones #Gardening #Peppers npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I love to bake those. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I’m running into a lot of cognitive issues today. Yuck. . Also, I just finished a call in one of the swankiest homes that I have been into. Condo, but they had money. Also, for the record, I hate gated communities npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut This is fairly solarpunkSunday npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut pick him up and look at the underside of the shell. If there is an indention, then he’s a male. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut when I was in Maine I contributed many bumblebee records to inaturalist. I know that they pull records from iNaturalist for the bumblebee Atlas. Exchange a few emails with one of the people who was over the project. I thought that I had made a sighting of the yellow bumblebee, but it was not. It was a northern amber bumblebee. Now my favorite species. I’m going to miss not being able to spot them down here in Georgia. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Young Mockingbirds in the hedge outside one of the local libraries. Frankly, they are much further along in their development than I expected. #Birdnest #Nature #Birding https://cdn.masto.host/dicecamp/media_attachments/files/116/381/841/031/757/083/original/c69c4fbdb0fab92e.jpeg npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut this is prime #solarpunkSunday stuff. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut if you live where there are earthworms, just toss the coffee grounds out on the ground. The earthworms will pull them into the soil. And they will decay in place. They do not acidify the soil. The acid stays in the cup at least with hot brew it does I don’t know about cold brew. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Oooh! An interesting looking episode!! #nature #foraging #plants #podcasts https://cdn.masto.host/dicecamp/media_attachments/files/115/466/280/995/276/043/original/602cb3deb7007f4c.jpeg npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I like it. It would be way too big for my needs unless I moved my entire extended family in, but I like it. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I hope so too! Back in the late 70's, my brother and I would entertain ourselves outside under the big pole light, by throwing little rocks up. The bats would catch them, figure out they weren't food, and drop them. I feel bad about this now. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut what do you mean “timeline”? npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Probably my last mention on this topic.... Children of Men is supposed to be a book, and if its even half as good as the movie, you are in for a treat! Seriously though, for this one.... watch the movie first. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut An old one, which I don't remember that well is "Lucifer's Hammer". (1977) A comet strikes earth. . Seven Eves is a different one - neal stephenson, so its pretty thoughtful. . I am Legend (1954). It's not mentioned. . "On the Beach"... quite enjoyed this one, but its a sad. . Afterland by Lauren Beukes... ah, this one is.... different. . "The book of strange new things" is post apoc and science fiction. Not read, but I'm very intrigued. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I read it in early high school, which would’ve been 40 years ago and it made an impression that stuck with me. Every read it once as an adult and I didn’t find it quite as compelling, but it was still pretty darn good. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Having attempted to transcribe some old census records (years ago).... it's not the cursive. It's the scrawls. Much of the handwriting is atrocious. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut why do you use a URL shortener? They don’t do much on mastodon. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Thank YOU npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut "Who knows? Times change. Would you call this age a good one for unicorns?" "No, but I wonder if any man before us ever thought his time a good time for unicorns.” The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Pg 5 @npub1ny7…uv57 npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut In addition to trying container gardening this year, I'm going to incorporate dandelions into my diet. Yep, "weeds". #gardening #foraging https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/five_ways_to_eat_dandilions npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Eggs are (really) strong, but I don't think they are truly dominant. . It's not the game to end all games, but its an enjoyable, lightweight to mediumweight game. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I enjoy the heck out of Wingspan. I've played it about 8 times - mostly as a duo with my wife. It's a good game with a decent variety of strategies. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I've a friend who has thru hiked the Appalachian trail 3 times now - he is going to do the Pacific Crest at some point. . Thanks for the photo! npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut I grew okra in Georgia - it does love its long hot summers. It’s great fried, but my favorite is the young tender pods lightly baked whole… npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut As someone who used one of these (though more primitive) for 2 years as an early teen... good luck. Buy for performance, sharpen often, and mow even more often. It'll build muscle. And aggravation. So, so much aggravation. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Someone measuring something as 17 and 3/4s, and not 18 inches cost us 10,000 dollars (roughly, bit more actually), so I feel ya. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Even if you stay on top of maintenance - which most folks don't (How often do you have someone out to tune up the AC?) Crawl under the house? (if you have a crawl space), pop a ladder up to look at the roof? It still gets pricey. npub13pchvf84qj9wjle7u7ensnc0h8k94xxf5552uj7gvpuh57tnzjlsqjdeeh Da_Gut Keep it up! English Ivy first crawls, then walks, then gallops, Yours is in the galloping stage. When you get enough beaten back, it will get easier and easier. I'm not sure how well English Ivy tolerates mowing or weed eating, but that's worth looking at. Kudzu has a low toleration for both - with luck, English Ivy will be the same.
