Hi Priya thanks for sharing the article it was a good read. Interesting that in Paarlbergs book only one of the 15 inflation cases he presented was natural (the plague which reduced worker supply) the other 14 were man made. While i concede not every modern ‘price inflation’ is caused by inflation of the money supply they are more often caused by man than nature. Thanks government and central banks.

Just finished a really interesting read, ‘An analysis and history of Inflation’ by Don Paarlberg. It covers 15 historical inflations over time and under various political and economic regimes. Pretty easy reading. It has a good summary and an interesting discussion of possible ways to limit the effects. It was written in 1993 so our favorite solution is not included but its an interesting thought experiment to pit it against the ones offered. Note to self, don’t hold government bonds.

Paying 12% interest is cheaper than 30% capital gains tax. As long as bitcoin’s CAGR is higher than the interest rate and you keep the leverage low it makes sense. Not risk free though.

If you are only qualified for one job yes it’s better to choose that job than starving. If you have a choice of multiple jobs choose the best one. If you don’t like being a worker avoid starvation in the short term by fiat mining and saving in bitcoin for the longterm.

I’ll use a personal example. Im a worker and live below my means. I realize i am being debased at ~7% by monetary inflation. Of the commonly available investment vehicles, stocks bonds gold real-estate, I choose real-estate. Because i can save 20% of the value of a home i take advantage of the government subsidized mortgage rates and go 5x levered long. I rent it out to earn 4 ways. 1. Rental income. 2. Equity via loan principal reduction. 3. Tax reduction. 4. Appreciation caused by me and all my friends monetizing real estate because we know the fiat currency is shit. Rinse repeat via refinancing.
The bigger my portfolio the more i can borrow.
That its pretty rational given the current circumstances. And some people should probably rent so landlords provide a valuable service to them. For example let’s say you take a temporary assignment for six months the costs of buying and subsequently selling makes no sense.
But if i have the option for bitcoin it makes sense to save in that. So i sell my houses which puts downward pressure on prices so folks that were priced out can now afford. Take away the lender of last resort and banks will reduce the risk they take writing loans so there will be less buyers. If a bank goes bankrupt another will buy its assets for favorable terms and save me the taxpayer from bailing them out. Without the government subsidizing interest rates people couldn’t afford such high prices so prices would fall.
The thrust of this is that the government interference and granting of monopoly/cartel protection to bankers distorts the housing market.
On a bitcoin standard there will still be people that need or want to rent, there will still be people that want to run a real estate business and thats fine. What we would probably have much less of is people owning real estate because they think it’s the best way to protect their purchasing power from monetary inflation because sooner or later they will realize bitcoin is better. Even if you don’t end the central bank life is still better for everyone with bitcoin around, even for those that don’t buy it.

I don’t mind people having different amounts of money as long as the rules of the game are the same for everyone, but they’re not.
The FED has a license to print an infinite amount of money by just making a keyboard entry. They are also legally protected from trading insolvent and going bankrupt.
Commercial banks are also allowed to create money from nothing and are functionally protected by the FED acting as a lender of last resort. Large public companies have access to large loans at low rates, and as you go down the stack to small public companies then large private companies to small businesses and individuals the loan size gets smaller snd interest rates get higher. The bigger you are the bigger you stay and the more the government protects you. See airlines getting bailed out during covid while my local hardware store sad forced to close. Proof of stake.
But if you take away the FED a good chunk of this unfairness goes away. You run a shit fractionally reserved bank and there is a run, bad luck you go bankrupt. Run a bad business go bankrupt.
If you are a worker and save in bitcoin for 8 years you can probably afford to leave if you want to or at least bargain better for a raise. If you and your coworkers don’t like the conditions take your bitcoin and form a coop and make better products cheaper and share your profits. When a business goes bankrupt because there isn’t the fiat lender of last resort you and your fellow workers with bitcoin can buy it for pennies on the dollar and run it better.
While i don’t like the fact that large companies can borrow billions for 0% they are acting rationally in the system as it exists today.
If you just got rid of the central bank and allowed stupid ideas to fail that would be a great start. I think on a bitcoin standard people would naturally end up with different amounts and thats cool. At least the rules of bitcoin are the same for everyone.

I agree that productivity has gone up fast as have costs of goods and services while wages less so resulting in a real cost of living crisis.
As you point out there is a shit ton of money it’s just not distributed fairly or evenly which are not the same thing. So no real argument on the symptoms or ill effects.
I think we disagree on the cause. From this specific meme you posted I take it that you think people with capital and own businesses are to blame.
Im more inclined to think that the central banks monopoly on issuing fiat currency is the greatest source of the inequality.
Given you have BTC in your moniker I’m assuming you like its monetary policy. I think in a world with bitcoin and without central banks the wealth inequality would be less. But i think there will always be some that are smarter, harder working and better at organizing and predisposed to taking risk and they will start businesses. Others will just be happy being workers. And each will be relatively better off on a bitcoin standard. Both are doing work snd being compensated for it. Hopefully what we will have less of is people getting money for nothing.

BitcoinDollar by Andrew B White is a new book that tells a geopolitical tale of monetary history. For me there was lots of new information not covered in purely historic/economic books. It discusses bitcoins future role, how it will impact the dollar, and its future role in shaping global power. Well written and the most comprehensive footnotes I can recall in a book of its type. Well worth the time to read.

Are you tired of heavy economic texts related to bitcoin? This book “The Nakamoto Consensus” might be what you need. It’s a work of fiction but based around bitcoin. This is the sort of book thats ideal for reading on a plane. Info related to bitcoin is accurate so as not to annoy you. Bad guys receive some old testament retribution, without the blunt force trauma of a Jack Reacher novel. Easy going and fun as long as you make peace with the fact you’re reading a fiction book before you start.

A new book out you might consider is “Bitcoin for Institutions” by Brian Hirschfield. Brian is an experienced actuary and capital market risk manager. The book covers various ways institutions can benefit from and incorporate bitcoin into their operations. A great book for a business owner or senior employee but it’s interesting to the individual as well.

Yeah its hard to make a detailed discussion a few lines at a time. I like the bitcoin monetary policy. It is what it is. No matter what experts think everyone knows what’s happening from now till the end of time. I can plan with that. I don’t need an expert to expand or contract it. People that like it can adopt it. If others don’t like programed money and want to use central bank fiat I’m ok with them choosing that. Because there is a choice you don’t even really need to debate it. Just make a decision and execute. If your life gets better good, if not then change.

If people are delaying purchasing decisions it’s because thats what is best for them in their circumstances. I constantly delay buying more chairs because i don’t need them right now but i do spend on food fuel and shelter that i do need. If people lose their jobs it’s because they are doing something unnecessary or wasteful. They should do something else rather than be propped up by money printing. What is an example of a country where they print lots of money and standards of living and purchasing power increases?

Good morning. Your way does sound more fair but it still creates distortions. Imagine everyone gets a stimmy check no matter their wealth. The goods and services in the economy remain the same but now they are being chased by more dollars so at first cut you could expect that everything will just get more expensive in proportion. So that doesn’t help anyone. But I don’t actually need a stimmy check to survive so i spend all of mine on bitcoin. But a poor person may have to spend all of theirs on food and shelter. In effect you gave rich people free bitcoin and made them wealthier. Was that your intention? In Australia they came up with the genius idea of giving all first home buyers a grant. All that happened was house prices went up in lock step, housing there is still unaffordable. All the well intentioned ideas for centrally managing the money supply makes it worse.

Just finished Modern Chains by Neal Flesher, it’s a superb book that makes the moral case for bitcoin. If you don’t hate central banks and fiat money enough already this book will help get you over the line. It’s also a call to action, no matter how small, it is imperative that we all fight against the injustice of financial slavery.
It is also a nice change of pace from the majority of bitcoin books that focus predominantly on the economic aspects. While philosophical it is written in a way that is easy to understand. Highly recommend!

Early 2020 i took a new job and moved across the country, bought a house and used a 20% downpayment to avoid mortgage insurance. Dumb move, should have paid minimum down and bought bitcoin. Made up for it by taking a HELOC in mid 2022 to buy bitcoin which is now worth 60% of the value of the home. I think in s couple of years the bitcoin will be worth more than the home.

I don’t think you have made a logical connection between capitalism and the negative outcomes you stated. They all exist to varying degrees under all the other ‘ism’s’.
I sold my rental properties because the problem i was trying to solve was outrunning inflation and bitcoin does that better. Selling them also made them available to folks that wanted to live in their own home rather than rent.
Where are the workers going to work if there wasn’t an entrepreneur that accumulated capital to start businesses and build factories? Not all workers are able or want to be entrepreneurs.
If capitalism is so bad why is it that net migration is away from communist/socialist countries to capitalist ones?
What are your thoughts on:
1. Property rights
2. Money issuance
3. Inheritance
4. Free speech
5. Gun ownership
I appreciate your passion and agree that you have identified issues that would benefit lots of people if fixed.

I agree that lots of societal metrics have gotten worse over the last 50 years, but thats true in capitalist, fascist, socialist and communist countries so I disagree that capitalism is the smoking gun problem, equally i don’t think its current form it is the solution.
Your solution is just feelings/opinions. Can you specify monetary policy, property rights, taxation, welfare policies that can be codified and enforced?
If people want to voluntarily rent accommodation rather than take on the responsibility of owning i am ok with others providing it and charging rent.
If people accumulate capital, start businesses and provide opportunities for others to be employees i am fine with that. If employees want to work and not accumulate capital fine. If they want to work so they themselves can accumulate capital also fine. Work for yourself or others is up to the individual. If your employer is stealing from you use the legal system or quit and start your own business-or work somewhere else.

No i would buy 20 bitcoin, use 10 as collateral to borrow $500,000 USD, then buy $450,000 more bitcoin and then still have the $50,000 USD for expenses. In 12 months time i would use the other 10 unencumbered to do the same thing, this time some of the borrowed fiat would pay the interest of the previous loan.

Good on ya Becks. For me it was a progression of realizing that everything that wasn’t bitcoin was costing me bitcoin and thus had yo go. Sold my stocks, real estate, life insurance, motorcycle. Changed from getting paid, paying bills then saving the left over to getting paid in bitcoin then selling just enough to cover the bills at the dnd of the month. So much calmer now.
