The last three years I bought two shitty trucks for cash. One was costing me $600/month in gas then the starter shit out. The second one died in the cold and also cost $400/month in gas.
The issue with trucks is they hold their value.
I'm looking at a new hybrid. Goddamn 35k though, BUT, they have the warranty and i put on about 35k miles per year so to me it seems like either buy a 15k that probably needs major work in 6 months, 25k for something that still has 100k miles, or 35k for something new, but if i go that route, i can't really stop like once I get that loan it's Tony committed for the next 5 years or he's gonna get rekt by a truck payment lol.
I'm just waffling on commitment.

Well, i hired the helpers last month, and we still hit profit even though it was like 4-6 hour days and I was meh about running them hard.
So if i tighten up the ship the business works.
But i'm on the fence because the next step is getting a work vehicle and once I do that I can't just decide in 6 months "fuck this" you know? because now I have a loan and like fixed costs that don't just go away...but yah thats where I'm at.
I get enough work right now to keep me occupied but next would be bring on a helper, train them slowly until we get overwhelmed, then a second, third, etc...

Idk what to do boys. I bitch constantly about painting, but customers keep showing up, keep referring me, and keep giving me more work...
Internally I hate painting. But externally I focus on customers, do the stupid shit like clean up after myself, double check everything, am easy to work with, etc.
Like the townhome i'm doing. This lady called three other painters. Every single one of them bounced and just ghosted the client. Like it's so easy to not be a fuck up in this business and they just throw work at you.

The funny thing about asbestos is that "encapsulation" is generally allowed. I know some landlords who took the old asbestos lined boilers and just wrapped them in cheese cloth...lol like thats a solution, but apparently its allowed.
I've been to an asbestos abatement project once before and it's wild. They literally wear hazmat suites and create rooms/doors made of plastic.
Whole Dexter vibe just to remove it.

Yah, from a public health standpoint it was bad. Iowa actually had a serious issue in like the 90s where like a substantial percentage of children had lead poisoning because all the old barns were painted with lead paint.
Though the epa has since drastically over corrected. Right now its required by law (epa law) to use lead renovation precautions in every home older than 1979. But lead paint was discontinued in the 60s so the odds of your home ACTUALLY containing lead, or it actually being exposed are very, very small.
Now if you're demoing an old building thats a different story, but if you're just doing a repaint the odds of it actually being exposed are super small.
The shitty thing about it is that as an adult its mostly harmless unless you're literally eating the paint in chunks. Where it's an issue for children is that it does taste sweet and they might be crawling around the basement licking the walls...

i actually wish we still used lead. The one time I've encountered actual lead paint it was in a 1800s farm house we were painting the old mud room.
I took a knife, cut the top layer of paint and it just peeled off the lead wall. I then used a high bond bonding primer, did two coats of primer, two top coats of paint, then tried the finger nail test and it just peeled right off. The primers we have no days literally won't bind to lead paint because it is so hard.
A wall painted like literally 100 years ago, STILL held its color and sheen. It is magnitudes better than any product we use now days. Even oil based primers couldn't bond to it. It was insane.

I would like to update the lore. So yes, Tony did go through a period where I used to eat paint chips. But it was for research.
About 10 years ago I went through a class to get EPA lead certified. You know, licensed to renovate lead paint.
During the class we learned that lead paint used to be marketed as "flavored" and in fact did have a sweet taste.
For about three years after, I used to grab a paint chip off of houses I was doing estimates on and bite it. Most paint tastes like latex, but after around 300 estimates, I hit one that was sweet.
I can infact confirm - lead paint is sweet tasting. So, before you get all up in arms about lead paint - take a nibble first.
