I see there's a provision allowing part of the fund to be used for administrative services, per diems, travel expenses etc, so I assume there will be a huge amount of self dealing. My mom speaks English with an accent, which retailers seem to equate with ignorant and gullible. We try to accompany her whenever she has to make a big purchase or car repair - not because she's incompetent but just so they know she has back up.

Oh my god my neighbor just told me he kicked his wife out, after 40 years together, because she gave $10k to a Nigerian Prince scammer and she won't admit she was scammed and he's afraid she won't stop until they lose their house 😯
I'm really shocked. Not just that people are still falling for this, but also ... they seemed like such a perfect couple. A single unit. You really can never tell what's going on from the outside.

A few years ago there was a story about vineyard owners who couldn't find workers, because there was no affordable housing near the fields and people in nearby cities couldn't afford cars to commute to the vinyards on the wages offered.

Is it even possible to live in stable housing and Not accumulate mountains of unneeded possessions? Was just sorting through a big storage tub of old teaching supplies that has dominated my tiny studio for over a decade, even though I don't plan to be a classroom art teacher ever again. Hope to pass them along to a friend who is still teaching, but didn't need to store them for so long first.

Refused to sign my doctor's office #PrivacyPolicy, because it's said something about advertising that I wasn't comfortable with. The receptionist of course looked at me like I was talking crazy, and suggested that if I didn't sign they can do whatever they want with my information. 🤔
Refusing to consent to having my information shared with advertisers means they can share my information with advertisers?? Looks like I have to go online and read it even more closely.

I have a close relative who is very attached to a big gift unwrapping ritual during our holiday gathering, as if we're all children eager to see what Santa got us. When I suggest we make a family donation to a good cause instead of shopping from each other's wishlists, she makes faces.
Her nostalgia for her childhood Christmas is killing me.

We don't see family very much, so on a day when most of those employed have the day off, it's nice to get together. My brother in law likes to cook (so I rarely have much to do), and my mom appreciates traditional celebrations, so we do it for them. As we've lost people over the years our gatherings have gotten smaller, so it feels important to do it while we still can.

No article on the rise of hoarding mentions rampant consumerism or the increase of cheap consumer goods. It's almost as if capitalism needs everyone to keep shopping, but having too much stuff is an individual pathology 🤔

For (reasons) I've been looking into the correlation between aging and hoarding. There's a lot of material on clinical hoarding behavior and extreme clutter leading to unhealthy outcomes. But very little about how older people just might not have the energy & capacity to clean house & manage their stuff.
In such a materially rich society, where consumer goods are relatively cheap & packaging is extreme, it's so easy to accumulate. Managing household waste can be an energy intensive job.

It seems like for people who have disabilities or are otherwise home bound, such easy access to necessities it such an important resource. But yup lots of people who can go out & (especially in urban areas) are surrounded by stores, what are they thinking?
