And this is why I value your books. You take all these pains to thoroughly learn the subject, setting up the weirdest situations just to see how "feature X" actually works, and then write clearly about it. Plus, you know, tech books rarely make me laugh, but yours always do on at least every other page. (I mean that in a good way. Not like Dave Cutler writing that "Windows is a multi-user operating system. One user at a time." That one made me laugh, but not in a good way.)

It is the process, but I wasn't smart enough to put the drive serial number on the drive sled, and I'm sure my vdev layout is less than optimal. (I wasn't sure how to think through the trade-offs.)
And I'm likely not doing replication to my second ZFS box well, plus I doubt my shares are quite right for my specific mix of systems.
That's what I meant: That I always find things in your books which make my systems better. Worth the price right there.

Yeah, I've done that. Replaced 1TB spinners with 4TB SSDs. 14 drives worth. (The other two were my boot pool mirror.)
It was tedious, and always a guess as to which physical drive you just removed from the vdev. Then you have to wait for the resilvering. And only after this week-long process do you finally see your storage expand.
Based on my personal history, I'm going to read this new book, and discover at least a few things that I should have done to make things better.

I have been very disappointed to learn what sort of human she is.
And I think it hits worse because the Harry Potter books spoke to something inside me. I felt I lived like a Harry, being different and looked down on for it. HP made me feel like someone understood that feeling, and created a place in my imagination where I could be happy.
And the mind that created it, which felt just like mine, turns out to be a rabid badger. She's taken that happiness away from me.

I'm not sure how Israel can violate an agreement which they were not a party to.
But the paper the US signed specifically said the US could not "threaten" Iran. Within hours Trump had...threatened Iran.
It's almost like Iran knows they won, and simply waited for the US to withdraw to use their newest weapon, "Closing the Strait".
And the US is prohibited from re-deploying to Iran by that same agreement. So I expect the bombings to start soon.

The Bureau of Dangerous Goods. This actually exists. Every time I see this logo, I am tickled at how wonderful that name is. Some people are just damned good at naming things.
FWIW, this is a company which specializes in compliance. If you have to ship something considered hazardous, these folks can ensure you do it correctly. Which is worth money.
Someone needs to make a movie about this. "Dangerous" could mean just about anything a clever writer wanted to write about.

I read the book. They lost me on page 1. They have this super-sensitive IR detector. So the first thing they do is aim it at the sun, which would burn it out.
The method for making artificial gravity was similarly weird.
But they make chocolate _and_ vanilla for a reason...so that's just my taste.

I've always been surprised that the spaceship in "My Favorite Martian" looks *exactly* like the cockpit of the SR-71. Which was deep, deep, black at that time. I'd still bet money that someone in the production staff had access to the program at some point.
(Although Skunk Works was still in Burbank at the time, so maybe there was a slip when moving things around at some point. It happens.)

I agree completely. I think the theory was that he was known to have beaten Trump before, so he should go again.
I think switching candidates in the *middle* of the campaign made it all but certain to be a failure.
Usually, if a President is on their last term, they prime the VP for the next run; give them more visibility and responsibility. None of that was done, so I wonder how long they planned for Joe.
OTOH, perhaps Biden was the best the Dems could do?

I recall having a conversation with Larry Niven at a convention, years ago. Digital Art was then new, and people generally thought of it as "less artistic" than art in other media. Niven said he liked it because, "It's infinitely perfectable."
Right now there's not a clear separation between artist and tool. I believe that will change, and then we will happily include art produced using AI techniques. This will also change the current copyright stance in the USA.

I have a pathological need for autonomy. As a result, I have always bristled at anything that tried to get between me and what I wanted to do. I want to make backups of my purchased software, so I learn how to remove the copy-protection. I discover that Google detects that I filter my browser, and switches from direct links to relaying through their servers. Ditch Google. And on it goes.
It can be exhausting, and I realize it's all futile, but I am compelled to try.

When they invented TSA, I stopped flying unless forced (by my employer). I do not have a RealID motor vehicle operator's license (which is in no sense an "ID"). I'll just let my employer pay the $45, and I always have the backup of a passport.

I've been doing a bit of learning on IPv6 security. It's not good. Maybe not worse than IPv4, but in my head I thought they had taken the IPv4 lessons to heart.
So far, it appears that fake Router Advertisements, and bad Neighbor Discovery Protocol packets can allow global MITM attacks. APTs were found using "Spellbinder" to maintain covert persistence on networks, using these sorts of techniques.
So much more to learn.

Not enough room to sufficiently explain this, but: I build, test, and deploy autonomous vehicles for a living. Have done so for over a decade. Autonomous cars can *never* be made safe. Much like AI, there are specific tasks where self-driving would be useful and safe. But public roads are not one of those places.
Instead, we should simply invest a similar amount in public mass transit.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was great, but my favorite was I Spy. I mean, sure, Jerry Goldsmith, but Earl Hagen wasn't too bad either. To be honest, all the shows from that time period were all 3/4 time jazzy tunes. Then someone went back to 4/4 time and it's been boring. ;)
One bit of trivia: I loved a bit in the show NCIS where someone asks what the character played by David McCallum looked like. There was a pause, and "Illya Kuryakin". Cracks me up every time.

I won a steak dinner by betting that the Enterprise being able to separate the saucer section from the engineering hull was mentioned in the series. I saw it in theaters, and had no idea it was related to the others. In fact, I avoid anything that even *smells* like a horror film, because real life scares me quite enough. I can handle "Army", and "Sin City", because they don't try to scare _me_, they scare other characters.

Historically speaking, the 4 worst Presidents in the US are Trump-1, Buchanan, Taylor, Harding. Which one is at the bottom is an open question, because they were all horrible in unique-snowflake ways.
Of course Hoover pursued policies (like tariffs) which led to the Great Depression. Harding himself said he wasn't qualified and shouldn't have been elected.
Buchanan was known for talking out of both sides of his mouth, and was still elected. So I'd put him dead-even with Trump.

IMO, we'll know if this is a sad lapse in voters' judgment, or a permanent change to the USA when the mid-term elections are over.
My thinking is that after those elections, Trump's influence will drop off sharply. GOP won't have to be concerned that they'll be primaried for opposing Trump.
But there's a stain on the party, and they very well might continue down the Fascist road. I don't think we'll know until then.

I can still remember watching the Dick Cavett show (I was a kid, but my parents liked it), and seeing President Nixon say, "If the President does it, it's not illegal."
So the USAPATRIOT Act rolled back all the restrictions placed on the FBI, CIA, etc. after COINTELPRO and the Church Committee. Now NSA keeps a Permanent Record of everything we do online, and the FBI has our location minute by minute. SCROTUS made the President a Sovereign, and Congress stood idly by. No one learns.

I'm hopeful that the non-Google Android ROMs (like LineageOS or Graphene) will drop that code from the AOSP base sources.
To be honest, Google is the most obvious example of a "lateral arabesque" in software. Start a FOSS project, get everyone to contribute and ensure alternatives die off. Then, slowly, move code to non-FOSS licensing.
I think TIVO did something similar, years ago.
I do wonder if we have what it takes to fork Android.

I actually liked Gene Scott. 100% corrupt, stealing money from people to pay for his limos. And his collection of printings of the Authorized Version (KJV) bible. After his death, it toured the country. And I got to lay my own eyes on the "Evil" KJV, where the commandment is: Thou shalt commit adultery." (Missing the 'not', in case your brain tries to add it back in.)

Oddly, it was when I mentioned not being sure if someone was Mormon because, "you can't always see their Eternal Smile." That's the term they use for the line their temple garments make under street clothes. The top is basically a tank top, with a low, scooped neckline so it doesn't show at the collar. He immediately said, loudly, "There is No Way you weren't Mormon." He was less happy when I walked him through the Word of Wisdom, and proved that it declares beer to be good for you.

I spent about 10 years living in an area that was 80% LDS. I generally liked living among the Saints, and I used my time learning what they believe and why. They can be sensitive to Gentiles (that's their term for Non-Mormons), because they just assume you're being critical. At a time when the Church TV ads all said "Mormons" on them, my neighbor would correct me _every_ time I used that word.
One of my coworkers is convinced I'm an ex-mormon because I know the jargon. ;)

I have two favorite episodes. The most favorite, by far, is when they explain how the Book of Mormon was written. The show uses historical flashbacks to tell Joseph's story. And, despite how they play it for laughs, the historical parts are exactly as the LDS Church itself says in their own history of the Book of Mormon.
My second favorite is when Judgement Day happens, they are all in Heaven, and someone asks which was the True Religion. "Mormons. The correct answer was Mormons."

My company insists on buying pre-made cables, even though we have techs fully qualified for it. It turns out that they don't bother with those "color code" things.
Had to cut an RJ45 to wire into an IOT-ish device, and it took 3 tries before I realized the colors were wrong. Back to multimeter to find which wire went where. That sure saved time and money...

I think I found a new place where AI slop is being used: Audiobooks. (Purchased, not amateur or pirated.) I was listening to a book, and every time an initialism appeared in the text, the "reader" would spell it out.
I can't recall any of the (many) instances, but something like, "The presents were brought at night by ESS AY ENN TEE AYY."
I first thought it was a non-technical reader; then I realized it was 100% consistent. Even things everyone knows.

I had a writer tell me that. And I realized that I do it both ways. For me, it depends on the context. For example, if it's a quote and the quote doesn't end with a period, I put it outside. I tend to use the same approach with parentheticals. Most times, the parens are "optional" explanatory text, so not "part of the sentence" in my view.
I tend to view grammar as a way to say things clearly. If it's clearer by breaking a "rule", I'll do it.

I believe Sweden still includes "sloyd" in their grammar school curriculum. This is a multi-grade course, but it starts with using the "sloyd knife" to carve wood. The intent is to build character by leaning self-reliance, and develop an appreciation for workmanship throughout life.
So from an early age, all schoolchildren are give a knife to carry around.

.US was simply what *I* chose. Pick .com or .ai if you prefer. Most people on the fedi aren't eligible for a .us domain anyway.
Since the "forwarder" is a domain registrar, simply pick one that's been in business for a long time. I hear DigiCert has a few years under its belt.
Cooked? You *own* that domain. Move your domain to a different registrar. If your registrar goes belly-up, choose again. Mail servers will retry delivery for days, so you won't lose mail.

Absolutely. I gave up being a Libertarian when I realized that some problems require regulation to be solved. This is one.

Back in the day, I was on dial-up. And changing ISPs meant a new email address. I then discovered that domain registrars supplied "email forwarders"; buy a domain and get up to 300 addresses in that domain, forwarded to wherever you were. So I could now have a fixed email address, and a change of ISP was a simple matter of changing the forwarding destination.
At that time, a .us address was $5/year. This is still relatively cheap, and not that hard to set up.

I think that would violate the Mann Act of 1910. But it's not related to his official acts as President, and Epstein can't be considered an advisor, so all comms with him would be evidence. Of course, he still can't be prosecuted until he leaves office, and if he stretches and appeals to the SCROTUS, he can probably still beat the rap.
