Hadn’t heard of Fork. Looks really nice. The manor thing for me is the live and instantly updated diffs (which Fork seems to have also from the screenshots).

Imagine a system where contributing to the common good is our yardstick for success, not personal enrichment by any means possible.
Such a system would not extract a “cost of living.” A dignified life with access to modern housing, healthcare, etc., would be considered a human right. And everyone would have a basic income they can use however they wish. Imagine what progress we would make as a species if more of us could contribute to science, to art, to all aspects of the human knowledge and the human experience because they were no longer wasting their entire time on Earth just trying to make ends meet.
This is not some pipe dream. For the first time in history we have the technological means to implement such a system.
Instead, we choose to live under the yoke of capitalism, a cancer that rewards the tumours that feast on society. Instead we use our technology to build walls and to mass murder and destroy our own habitat.
Again for the first time in history, we have the technological means to destroy our entire species or to expand it to new horizons.
Humanity has reached adolescence. Whether we make it to adulthood is up to us entirely.

So mine’s apparently an Issue 4 from 1982. Although there’s a sticker in it that reads 1 Nov 83 (maybe when it was sold/serviced?)
The board’s out and yes, I was a bit of a barbarian and, since I’m not going to be using the composite out, cut the wires to it instead of desoldering them. If I ever need it, I can just connect the wires again.
Now the bit that scares me…

The issue is it’s almost impossible to get folks to add the link correctly to their accounts manually. So I built a system there they can sign in with their Mastodon account and it adds the link to their account automatically. And it’s important to be able to differentiate people who are signed up to be verified vs those who are not.
We do not have a list of scam accounts.
(And I’m building/maintaining the site by myself in addition to trying to get the Small Web launched this year. So I’m going the best I can with zero resources.)

It is a single thing. The USA is a state. It funds Israel’s genocide. It is waging an illegal war in Iran. It is the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons against civilian population. It is where it is today because it has more weapons than anyone else and will use them to destroy any country that gets in its way. That’s what the United States of America is. The world’s most powerful bully. Nothing more. Nothing less.
The people living there? They’re not one thing. But funding settler colonialism, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and genocide for close to a century – not to mention the US’s countless other foreign aggressions – doesn’t seem to be a deal breaker for them either.

We’re sadly aware and we have been trying our best to tell everyone that this is harmful for everyone involved but there are a few accounts we can’t seem to get through to.
We get the absolutely horrendous circumstances but it doesn’t help when the repercussions are lost trust for everyone and suspended accounts.
Needlessly to say, mass tagging and direct message tagging of people you don’t know are against our rules at Gaza Verified and we will not be challenging suspensions that arise because of this. We have in the past and we’ve had accounts repeating the same thing over and over again even after we advocated for them multiple times. You agree to these rules before you sign up for a verification call and they’re there to keep you from getting limited and suspended.
We will continue to try and explain best we can why Mastodon and the fediverse is different to mass mainstream platforms.
The best thing you can do here is to forge real connections and friendships. The more people follow and interact with you, the more they will share your posts and the more support you will see. You might be able to reach a few thousand people with a mass message but it is meaningless if your account is then muted/blocked/suspended. And it greatly harms the other people from Gaza who are not doing this and what we’ve been trying to so (and succeeding in doing) here: countering mainstream propaganda, building trust, and fostering a community that is welcoming to our friends and families in Palestine.
To our Gaza Verified family, if you’re reading this: please also watch out for this behaviour between yourselves and talk to each other about it also. Joy, Aseel, Aya, Fabio and myself are volunteers with limited time. We cannot (and will not) police close to 150 people/families. We shouldn’t have to. We’re here to help keep your accounts from being unfairly shut down because of who you are and to protect your voices on this platform. But we need your help to do this.
And to anyone who receives mass-tagged messages from someone who is Gaza Verified, please let me or @npub1xw9…75ln know before you report them. We can try to talk to them and explain things. Not everyone is technically savvy and some people are just following what they see others doing or what they’ve been told works. Remember that these are people facing genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and settler colonialism. Palestine has one of the most highly-educated populations in the world and yet even their ability to earn a living has been denied to them. Their schools, workplaces, hospitals, even their fields and farms have been destroyed as part of Israel’s ongoing genocide. So, please, have some compassion and at least don’t report them right away. Did they not have enough? Who knows? The process is entirely opaque. Public money should have a public process that’s transparent. Who are the people deciding. What are their technical qualifications? What was the deliberation that took place? Why aren’t any of these things public? Maybe I should write something more about this if I find time. But right now I have to code the thing I’m making and that’s hard enough as it is with zero funding. So I’ll get back to that.

It’s going to fundamentally change how we do things and, hopefully, it will mean that individual accounts won’t have to try to be heard to get donations.

Remember folks, Israel and the US can do whatever the fuck they want to anyone for any reason and there is fuck all you can do about it. If you oppose Israel, you’re Hamas and if you oppose the US you’re a commie. These aren’t good people we’re talking about, they’re fucking monsters – the dregs of humanity – and guess what, they don’t give a shit; they’re proud of it… they’re belly-laughing in your face after ripping it off with their teeth. They’re stronger than you and that’s all that matters. The only language they understand is if someone stronger than them puts them in their place. International law? The rules-based order? So the other day my Onewheel started pushing back at relatively low speeds. My first thought was, “must be tire pressure.” Pumped up the tire, went out again, same thing. Hmm… could I have inadvertently changed the shaping?
So I fire up the app to find the setting for the shaping and I’m stumped. There’s nothing about it on the main nav at the bottom. So I look under the hamburger menu and I find a Settings section and go there. Nope, nothing.
Wtf?
Literally after staring at the app for ten minutes I accidentally trigger the photo carousel and *bam!* get notified that the shaping has changed.
Which, clearly, is how I’d fumbled into onto the beginner setting when I ride Pacific.
The shaping, by the way, is what determines the character of your board and ride. It’s a major thing. It impacts safety. And in this app, it’s set by swiping on a control that looks like a photo gallery of OneWheel photos.
🤦‍♂️
Moral of the story for designers: make everyday actions simple to perform, yes, but, equally, make actions that are infrequently performed and/or could have potentially catastrophic consequences hard to perform. Also, make your controls look like controls and label them.
