I know the landlord isn't their dad, but he should make the kid help him fix it. Teach them a skill, show them what the consequences are (and how it's much easier to destroy than to fix) - I don't care whether he makes them pay or not (I'd personally opt to just buy it with the money they're paying me for rent - and maybe the deposit).

most of my stuff was during the "initial setup" where you can't even get to the various apps (without using the secretish SHIFT+F10, and then cmd to launch apps directly) so it was even less obvious at first as to what was happening.

maybe. i only had a couple of major updates to download on this things, and one of the cumulative updates was sitting at 4% for well over an hour (with almost zero network traffic) - and i was not running into any other issues among any of my systems (e.g. not a network issue).

I was just resetting a laptop for a friend (so they can gift it to another of their friends). using the built-in reset tools on a dell laptop - at least the modern ones, is refreshing. however! windows 11 updates are slooooooow - what is wrong at microsoft right now (besides all of the obvious things)?

I am not a fan of this.
Not what the Judge did for the guy, you know that vet has gone through Hell. The hell of the war, and the hell after he came home.
What I don't like is the obvious theatrics. Why are they filming (PR)? Why is the young lady up there with the judge? Why is this overproduced with an emotional musical bed? It reeks of reality TV 3.0, exploitation and emotional manipulation. I find it quite disgusting.

If I got into that situation, I'd either sell them the vehicle at my (fair / bluebook) price or I'd have it towed to a junkyard and sold for scrap out of spite. I'd have them rip out whatever they put in and refund me in full (and if they didn't reverse the charges, I'd be doing a credit card chargeback since that's probably the only way I'd pay a mechanic unless I reeeaaaallly trusted them). They would not be getting another penny out of me.

Here's a fun example of "lying with statistics" I just saw on the fedi timeline (allocation as a percentage of GDP). I only care because I'm guessing these folks are trying to say the US didn't donate enough to have a say in Ukraine's peace negotiations... But when you look at the other graphs from the same source (https://www.ifw-kiel.de/topics/war-against-ukraine/ukraine-support-tracker/) you can see that the US wasted far and away more money and military aid on this war than any other source.

I will say that as an IT worker, I have had to (respectfully) push back on bonehead ideas from management that ultimately were pointless (or worse counter-productive). But I work in a completely different industry and have a good working relationship with my manager. Not everyone has a boss that will listen to their boots on the ground counterpoints to stupidity. We do have management push bad ideas some times... Sometimes we have to say, "we told you so," afterwards...

It'd be pretty annoying if car manufacturers swapped the brake and gas pedals with every new model release. I get it. but that's why IT should be managing that stuff centrally if possible. you have to move a bit slower, plan for change, train and communicate. It's a lot of underappreciated work. I jokingly call myself an Internet janitor in my current gig, cuz that's about how we get treated.

Definitely. I don't think I've had to spank my kids for a few years now.
I can and will take them down and wrestle them if I have to though. Possibly a bit of tickling if necessary.
Most punishment now involves "grounding." They can actually be reasoned with most of the time though, and the reasoning/discussion (and discipline) is better than punishment.

Our nation (and world) would be a much better place if corporal punishment was practiced (and not abused) appropriately as needed.

Costco's getting tighter too. they are starting to require you to allow them to scan your card to enter. used to be able to get into the food court and restrooms without an ID check. now they make you scan in. Last time I was there, the scanners were not working, and there was a major traffic jam of people trying to get in... they just started waving us all in bypassing their new crappy scanners. I am seriously considering whether to renew my membership.
