Next remember that tank warfare is last century's warfare. Tanks last like a day in the battlefield now before they're blown up by drones. Next you gotta look at the amount of money the UK spends to host America's nuclear missiles while lying that they are an 'independent' nuclear 'deterrent'.
Not independent, and likely not a deterrent. Certainly unusable in pretty much any conceivable circumstance other than 'UK has gone bad and thinks mass murdering millions of people is okay'.
Doesn't even leave us able to actually build these things if, say, America goes rogue and starts wars of aggression for oil rights.

Shame we can't all go back to running ICQ really. It literally never got better than that. But ICQ would let you do things big corporations didn't like (for example send large copyrighted files directly) and was peer-to-peer and so unsurveillable.
So they did what they always do. Bought it and shut it down.

You know there's a chance it would be legal for the King to just set up Brit-Coop as an act of resignation.
Transfer ownership of everything belonging to the crown to a new organization that has ownership by worker-hour, and a mission to rebuild the public infrastructure for the public good.
Use government connections to get it the contracts for welfare-money-for-training.
He won't. Nor will his kids.
Royals aren't about that. They aren't the country. They shouldn't be it's owners.

I'd make its first mission really to replace Amazon with the Royal Mail, which would become BritCo's mail service.
Building a web-site to be a store-front for every UK-retailer, with warehousing and processing done by British workers. Building BritCo for the future of the nation wouldn't even be that hard. Amazon is just a compute infrastructure and software. We need British versions of those things anyway. After that it's just warehouse space.
Alongside that you can clean the rivers and build green energy and generally a supply-chain that is owned by the workers and not by multinational private capital.
This path is probably not compatible with a rejoin-EU I'm afraid.
Not without reforming the EU first, and sadly that is also an institution basically owned by multinational private capital and in which you can get any policy you like so long as it enriches private multinational capital.

An actual job-guarantee is a brilliant plan, if you combine it with national ownership of the public infrastructure and a new national worker-owned co-op, you could actually revitalize the country and take some wealth back from the multinational private corporations and into actual unalienable British hands.
Start BritCo: the British Co-op.
The state will subsidize worker's wages, in that anyone who wants a job is guaranteed one at the BritCo on minimum wage and if BritCo can't make profit from it then they get welfare money to train them up till they can.
BritCo is owned entirely and inalienably by the workers, past and present, with one share for every hour worked which can not be sold or paid at any other rate. Wages may differ, be more for skilled work than the minimum paid for training, but ownership is one share per hour worked (including during training).
BritCo's mission is to rebuild the national infrastructure.
Fix the pipes, clean the rivers, upgrade the grid, build open nationally-controlled software systems, hardware production, build green energy, build national wealth and infrastructure and make it owned not by private international capital but by the workers who built it.
The state must not own BritCo. Its workers do. So BritCo can't be privatized by a mis-elected 'conservative' government.
Everything currently 'royal' becomes BritCo. Owned by the workers. So do many previously nationalized industry. Compensate current owners if you must, I'd just renationalize it without recompense. Wasn't really the state's to sell you mate. Stolen property. Sorry.

They want to offer workfare again, a false 'job guarantee' in which the state pays the wages of a worker working for a private company.
Tax-payers pay Tesco's shelf-stackers, and everyone wins somehow.
This plan that keeps coming up is of course a result of the utter take-over and ownership of the government by private multinational capital.
As a result, you can get a politician to propose a policy if and only if that policy transfers more wealth from public ownership into the hands of private multinational capital.
Our governments have become allergic to any idea that the people should own anything at all in common, that there should be any public ownership of anything at all.

Burnham is on the radio doing a launch speech.
He thinks the people of Makerfield are going to write the script for the whole UK.
Namechecks every local borough.
There's been forty years of policies that leave people struggling, that took away jobs, can't afford homes. [yep]
Namechecks some local companies and football teams and schools in a story about a football game. He lived here a long time and likes it.
It's unjust what Westminster has done to this place which makes him very angry.
So the election is a call for change, for these local people in particular, to the economy, education, transport, care, and politics.
More tech schools not concentrating only on university degrees.
He wants to get to the point where the council is building more homes than its losing. New cheap council homes.
Imagine some local person suddenly called to a job interview in the city, they have to pay 364 quid to get to the city. Re-nationalize rail to make rail fares sane.
His dad is in a care home. A local one. Its run for profit. Which needs to change so that it's provided on NHS terms with a social care system that supports the NHS.
We won't get those things without changing politics.
Manchester is the fastest growing city because of how he worked with business. He loves working with business too. Public "control" working with business over busses has been good in Manchester he recons [I think people generally agree, but I dunno]
Note, he says, how he's not been dissing the other parties. He doesn't want that. [Good actually]
He wants his own party to change too.
A vote for him is a vote to change Labour. To change it back to the one the people used to know. On the side of working class people and communities.
This is not a new journey, he has always been working to make the lives of local people better. Ever since his first day walking into the Labour club when the manager said "You're on, between the bingo and the turn, keep it short".
His three word slogan: I'm For Us.
Its a very good speech. He is very personable. Sounds like a normal person not remotely like a robot the way ministers tend to.
It does sounds a lot like what Starmer was saying when he was running for selection four years ago. He hasn't explained how he can do all that given the constraints Starmer thinks he is under. Which of those constraints are wrong.
That Andy Burnham will win this contest.

People are saying the public are massively uninformed because they think migration is going up even though actually net migration has gone down so much it's frankly a threat to the economy.
But the people don't think the way the statisticians think. When they are asked "Is migration going up" they say, "Yeah, sure, lots of extra migrants are turning up every year."
And they are NOT wrong. Net migration is still a positive number. The number of immigrants in the country is still increasing.
The idiots correctly think the press is just pulling a fast one. Doing some numbers trick to pretend the number of immigrants is going down when it is in fact still going up.
The idiots are wrong about whether immigration is good or bad, they are wrong about the reasons they want it to be lower, it is terrible news that net migration has dropped so high.
But they aren't wrong about the press trying to pull the wool over their eyes and trying to trick them into thinking it's going down when in fact it's just going up slower.

I think the public are just trying to say that the number of immigrants is still rising. Which it is. Net migration has fallen quite sharply, and that will cause all sorts of problems, but its still a positive number.
The people being asked want it negative. They don't want migration numbers to fall, they want the number of migrants already here to fall. They want deportations.
Which would cause even more problems but they falsely believe fewer people means more for each who remains.

So it's decided then, there is indeed to be a Green candidate at the by election. Phew. Seemed a bit last minute there, thought maybe there were gonna fail to find someone.
Suppose someone working in child safeguarding is probably pretty careful with his social media ranting and law abiding so that should be pretty safe hopefully.
Don't know him at all. Hopefully he'll get some air time, increase his profile, increase the green vote share.
How much the Green's time, effort, and money the party will spend on the campaign is still to be seen. Can certainly see the argument for not wasting resources in a campaign you're unlikely to win.
But hopefully the assembled world camera will get to hear the Green message at least.

But does he even mean actual public ownership? Or just the kind of franchise systems he's so proud of running the local Manchester busses under.
He'll stick to the austerity, the fiscal rules, these artificial limits on government investment.
And if he loses the seat? Someone else in the party will surely stand up and say basically that. Raynor maybe, Milliband.
There is nothing to gain from standing back and helping Labour put their most popular candidate in place when their most popular candidate is still very shit.

Yeah, the odds of winning are are much worse than Gorton&Denton. G&D would have probably gone to Burnham if they'd let him stand even.
But the assembled world media will be pointing their spotlight on that contest and to step back and shut up during that would be very costly.
A Burnham win, with his keeping the Reeves spending limits and refusing to do PR, just isn't any better than Milliband leading Labour.
There's nothing to win by stepping down. Burnham is just as shit as the rest.

the national 'higher-ups' don't decide the local candidates. The local party does.
The national party has funding they may or may not allocate to the campaign.
When I say we should fight its not really proscriptive. Depends if the local party actually has a good candidate really, and I don't know that. The locals will know who is best from their number.

Andy Burnham is not good. He can't promise PR, labour even under him will never back down in even one seat. This is the biggest opportunity to put green policy in front of the assembled world media and local voters in this century.

Starmer is doing a thing about election results. Is he resigning? :bounceface:
He says the elections were tough, he lost brilliant representatives. He feels the hurt and takes responsibility. Not just for the results, but also for explaining how they'll do better in the years ahead.
Times are dangerous, opponents are very dangerous, if we don't get it right the country will be on a very dark path.
He takes responsibility for navigation in this dangerous world and for not walking away.
Oh right, he's not resigning then. 😦
He says he'll prove his doubters wrong. He's learned a lot! And realizes now we need a bigger response to this unordinary times.
Times demand serious progressive leadership he says, and Zack or Nigel can't provide that. [Citation needed] Only Labour can [Really, come on, citation needed]
He's pleased to be reducing NHS waiting lists and crime, and for some reason is pleased migration is coming down too.
He says he realizes that people don't think Labour cares about them. So that's something.
So his plan to fix things after this election is to talk more about why he's doing things instead of just saying what he's doing.

He admits millions of people, like his sister, don't get respect or help and are held back because the status quo doesn't work.
He says he's fighting for them but, eh, perhaps he should be doing that thing where he says more about why and how?

"Strength Through Fairness, Hope and Urgency" is his plan.
Three concrete examples of the plan:<li>British Steel, hours away from closure, was rescued. They took control. Now, having failed to find a corporate buyer, they are going to give themselves power to take full national ownership of British Steel!</li>
Sure, about time, not like the Greens are against that.<li>Europe: Nigel said Brexit would make us richer and reduce migration and make us more secure but he was wrong on all counts! At next EU summit Starmer will once again set a new direction by rebuilding the relationship, putting Britian at the heart of Europe.</li>
Doesn't sound like he wants a re-join though, so not really sure what this means. The EU don't allow partial memberships or cherry picking benefits. Some kind of external heart I guess, an outside-body heart pump?<li>Every Child should have the opportunity to go as far as their talent can take them, so is he going to remove student fees and issue a grant to students, wipe out student loans? </li>
No. He's going to guarantee training or work placements to school leavers.
So in response to likely being unelected next time, he'll nationalize steel (now he's failed to find a corporate buyer anyway), is going to renegotiate with Europe (again, they have no better offers to give), and offer apprenticeships to education-leavers (who are still going to be mostly in debt by then).
Right.
Oh, and he's going to ban more marches too. Almost forgot that.

In my ward the greens seem to have got about a third of the vote vs Labour with the rest. 2:1
Which is a big improvement. 300 or so neighbors to turn.
In the borough we've gone from unanimous Labor to about a third Green. Which is oddly proportional to my ward. Not really sure I understand the actual counting system with the three votes I had or if it's PR or not.
Nationally its awful for Labour but also worse for the country since outside London they lost mostly to the Reform (nee Brexit) party/private-company.
Conservatives seem irrelevant, even Lib Dems more important.
I've been casting doubt upon the idea of an imminent Reform government, saying it'd be unprecedented for Reform to go from one ever elected MP to 400 MPs in a single election. But these elections feel pretty close to that kind of swing.
Starmer says he'll stay on. He has no concept of what government should do other than give tax breaks to businesses to try to get economic growth, and crack down in authoritarian ways with increased surveillance and ID checks and prosecuting protestors.
He doesn't seem to realize that government can just do things, especially after Brexit. It can just pay people to build infrastructure owned by and giving profit to the state. It does not need private investment. Isn't that supposed to be the point of a Labour party?
So things will continue to get worse and Labour will continue to chase Reform policies (and so validate them). So Reform may well win.
There is one hope. Burnham could resign as mayor, a safe-seat MP could resign, and Burnham stands there. Assuming he wins he could then stand for leadership. And then if he wins and then actually does something despite the protest of the right wing of his own party, maybe things could get better.
That's a lot of conditionals. You'd want good odds to place a bet on that.
Or the greens of course. These elections have seen hundreds of new green councilors. The momentum is good. Probably take the council here next time unless that Burnham things happens.
So good for Greens, but better for Reform, and we could do with a Labour party which wasn't failing.
Oh well. Fingers crossed I guess. Few more years till the national ones.

UK Media is shrill over Zack Polanski pressing a retweet on a post wondering if some cops used excessive force.
Apparently police are so weak that someone retweeting about them using excessive force might stop them wanting to use any force at all! We'll be overrun with crime because the police will be too scared to do anything in case the leader of the 4th largest party retweets something mean about them.
This is very important they shriek, all in a panic, and surely shows that the Green party want criminals to rule the country.

Gary's back after making his documentary for Channel four and he's frustrated and face-palming at the utter political ineptitude of the UK Labour Party that mean a collapse of 200 years of political bipartisan ship.
Great long rant.
He wants it to be the case that the Labour party have to do wealth taxes or they'll lose the next election, so they'll do wealth taxes.
What he doesn't seem to understand is Labour don't care if they win the next election, their mission is to protect the capital of their donors. Same as the other party in that two party system.
I long for the death of the two party system more than he seems to though. I'd rather have PR than Wealth Taxes and I'm sure he's the other way.

I see no sign of any recognition from those who would want such a ban that they see any of the collateral damage a successful ban would have on the majority of kids who are not falling for this bullshit. That they are banning any good at all along with the bad.

I see that the lobbying for these laws are funded by the absolute worst companies on the internet, those who will be entrenched by the legal compliance costs, that will cement themselves as the arbitrators of who is allowed to access the internet.
It’s a gift to Palantir and other surveillance companies. The very people running these algo-feeds are the ones who benefit from IDing every user and stalking them across the internet on their government-approved internet-licence IDs.
I don’t think even a successful ban on social media for kids would actually address the issue of kids being exposed to sexism and misogony or reduce the kids alienation and depression.
A ban can’t help, will make many things worse, won’t address the problem, and will make competing with the worst surveillance capitalists on the planet more difficult.
Going to war with every internet site and advice forum and making internet access harder won’t fix anything, and will have massive collateral damage against everyone seeking support from strangers or trying to learn things their parents won’t teach them.
But I see we are going to do it anyway.
The direction is clear.
Those companies do get what they lobby for, and they are lobbying hard for ID checks on every website, wrapping their desire to enclose the internet commons for themselves in a faux concern for children’s welfare.
And governments wish to monitor and control the internet, so they will pass these laws.
I wonder how many parents have a family group-chat that they’re going to accidentally ban their kids from using, not realizing that ‘social media’ might include Whatsapp? 😆
It won’t fix anything, it will make the situation for kids worse, impose costs and rents and hacks and exploits on all of us, and increase government and corporate power.
Many will lose access to their networks of support and help.
So it goes.
We will build a better more censorship resistant internet. It’s already here really: Briar. Matrix. Nostr. Bitchat. Veilid. Spritely. And the rest.
The laws may push us there faster.

None of these surveillance companies trying to break your kid’s brains would exist if we hadn’t made it illegal to reverse engineer their manipulative crappy software and produce compatible none-manipulative clones.
But they have been granted legal monopoly, so they can do what they like.

End the DMCA and the similar laws which they campaigned for to prevent competition. It’s those laws which give the corporations the power to push their algorithms and limit alternatives.

There is support for these laws because people think the only consequence of a ban on a thing is that the thing stops existing.
For instance: Heroin is dangerous and addictive? Ban it then.
And suddenly you have organized crime and a grey market and criminal gangs shooting each other in the streets while addicts can’t seek help and have to resort to crime to fund their addiction. Their lives more chaotic and criminal than ever. Our streets are littered in needles.

If you break kids access to the internet you sacrifice all the good that the majority of kids are getting from it for an ineffective solution which won’t fix anything and will mean massive increases in government surveillance and censorship. Reading algorithmic feeds is a crazy thing to do: abandoning control over your own influences to a robot programmed by advertisers to manipulate you?

I will not allow a robot programmed by advertisers and surveillance capitalists to determine what I read.
I don’t read any robo-feeds and don’t recommend anyone else does.
But people do:

I watch some Youtube, but not though their app. Uninstalled that from my phone as soon as I got it. It’s an awful downgrade of just playing in a browser page. I subscribe to some channels there in my RSS reader like a boss. Never watch what their recommendation algorithms suggests.
I tell them what I want to watch, I don’t let them tell ME what to watch, and frankly I wish all those videographers would start a peertube instance or something instead of posting their work on a corporate surveillance site.
I say you should avoid that algorithm stuff, it’s crazy manipulative.
But people should be free to do what they want.
I’m free to block Facebook! And I do: and I encourage everyone else to do so too.
Edit your DNS, block their domain names. Do it.
But if governments or corporations have the power to mandate those choices for everyone, it will go badly.
Prohibitions always do.

The reasons for this lobbying are nefarious.
The bans will entrench existing companies ensuring no small company is able to compete. These massive entrenched companies will be able to afford the identity checking and compliance costs, tiny start ups not so much.
You can see why Facebook lobby so hard in favour of these laws. If their app WhatsApp is defined as the only group messenger allowed for kids by law, that is very nice for them.
Perhaps compliance is actually cheap and easy and small companies can afford it?
Certainly not if they are trying to compete in terms of privacy. They have to turn over their user ID data to a monopolist vetting company by law.
At best: we give the government the power to impose massive costs on any company they decided to add to a list of companies that count as social media. Impose costs and force them to hand over their user data to Palantir and the like.
Even if you trust the current lot of idiots in power to not abuse this whole-internet global tracking data, that is quite a totalitarian system to hand over to the really bad guys when they get elected next time.

Thanks to Starmer's excellent stewardship, the Labour party ruled out their best candidate for factional reasons, told the electorate how Reform were correct about immigration but Labour will do half as much about it, and alienated his base voters so much he went from a massive majority to third place behind the party he's been chasing.
If Labour continue to try and ape Reform instead of debunking them, if they continue to do everything the billionaires want instead of taxing them, continue to suck up to Trump and US capital instead of striving for sovereignty, they will continue to lose voters. My dad was a professional meter-reader working for the electricity board, doing door to door, reading the dials.

This is why peertube is such a struggle. Video hosting costs are incredible. Anything with unlimited open signup is going to bankrupt itself leaving the users without a host.
I think that Peertube and likely any video platform really needs, much more than Mastodon etc, to be self-hosted. Only if you're paying for your own storage do you really know if things are worth archiving and keeping in perpetuity.

Remember when the internet used to be a thing you could use to organize and spread word of your protest and dissatisfaction? It could spark an arab spring or bring down a government.

Glad to see lots of people liking and sharing the Green Party England&Wales broadcast this week. It's striking.

So the temporary placeholder name "Your Party" is made permanent.
None of the options on the shortlist were good. Most of them just as grammatically inconvenient as the dumb placeholder name.
The people who decide on the short-list, who can be a member, whose votes counts and what the options are, have quite a lot of power.
Zara Sultana boycotted day one over who sets the rules and who can be involved. If Your Party have a governing body with power to override conference they end up like the Labour party and just are easily taken over and usurped by a cabal of thatcherite neoliberal capitalists.
They did allow the dual membership system and a wider governance, so Zara won on who gets to be a member and who gets to be in charge. Which is probably good.
Coz as the terrible name shows, if you put the idiots in charge you'll get idiocy not good collective decision making.
For now the membership appear to have won, and I hear are they are all very excited and fierce and canny and not likely to let the old guard just set up another dictatorship from the top.
They currently have half the membership count of the greens, less than a quarter that claimed by Reform. Lets hope they can get some attention towards something other than how billionaires think the country should be run and focus on the people.
Here's hoping they can inflate that number by draining the Labour party and Reform members who just want change really rather than actually liking anything said by Farage.

bitcoin leeds the way, just as it did in 2022. It sniffs out liquidity issues way before the rest of the markets cos it's so liquid and speculative and markets never close.
I think rather than bitcoin being to blame, it's the leading indicator that people don't have any money.
Markets can't go up if ICE have kicked out a bunch of the customers and scared away even more and business have sacked all the workers.
Bitcoin is affected first and hardest, but the root cause is just that nobody has any money to buy because there's a recession everywhere except ai investment which will never be profitable.

Dunno that "mandate" is quite the right word for setting up the system so that every pull request to the codebase gets reviewed by the AI bot, but since it's use is unavoidable that's what I voted.
It's caught some bugs before they're published, and hallucinated many problems which aren't really there.
But all the code we write is being reviewed by robots now, and so the code is written slightly differently to avoid it going on about issues that aren't really there.
People imagine that code is written for the computer to run, but really it's always been written for the programmers to understand. Now it's also written for the ai that has no context or understanding to review.

The cops and the government suggest that tomorrow's protest against the proscription of Palestine Action should be postponed because a crazy person done some murders.
The home secretary says

That is not the point of the protest. The point of the protest is to show that the proscription of a non violent protest organization under terrorism laws is ridiculous and unenforceable as well as being a massive waste of police and court time.
Delaying the protest would harm that demonstration. The police are over stretched and can't enforce this stupid counter-productive proscription without compromising their duty elsewhere.
Demonstrating that is the point of the protest, and police saying "We are too stretched to arrest all these demonstrators" just reinforces that point all the more.
You know what police and government? You could just not persecute non violent protestors as terrorists. That'd solve your over-stretched police resources problem in one stroke!

It's because people mistake the symbol for the thing it symbolizes. They think in magic. The flag isn't just a symbol with a referent, it IS the country. They feel attachment and pride to the symbol, because they feel attachment and pride for the country.

Voting in the UK Green party elections is half over. Too late to join the party and vote, and sounds like Zack is very likely to win.
Which is good. I voted for him.
I think the job-share rule is important and that any job should be possible to share between workers. But in the case of the "leader", which is literally the face of the party, having two faces is difficult in the public hive mind. Even with a united front, it's litterally two faced.
But mostly my vote was just for Zack, and would have likely voted for him in a job-share too.
He's very personable and seems to know how to talk to the public and express not just environmental issues but other green issues like inequality and war and how your enemy is not a boat of refugees but the concentration of power in the hands of maniacs both political and corporate.
I confess I gave up trying to read anything about the candidates and cast a vote about half way down all the other jobs being elected. I'm just adding noise. I dunno who any of these people are or even what the job entails most of the time and there's too many all at once. Should stagger them weekly or something.
Anyway here's Zack on Mark Steel's sweary podcast being brilliant on the issues and how to explain them better than I can.

Dear Emily Thornberry,
I don't usually bother to write to you on most issues because I figure there is pretty much no point communicating with a whipped MP in a safe seat under first past the post. Such an MP has no reason to listen to their constituents at all, and is entirely a tool of the party leadership.
I make an exception today since I hear your government is about to classify Palestine Action as a terrorist group. Despite them being peaceful, non-violent, and dedicated entirely to preventing the greater crime of the ongoing genocide of Gazan Palestinians.
This is obviously a gross overreaction and a completely unjustifiable act designed not to prevent domestic terrorism but to cover up British forces and UK government involvement and collaboration with the genocide in Gaza.
If we are taking suggestions for groups to ban as terrorists even though they aren't terrorists, I would like to suggest the Labour Party! The party has helped facilitate a genocide abroad, and continues to supply the perpetrators with arms and intelligence to aid their actions.
I don't expect you to take that suggestion seriously, but maybe Reform will take it seriously when they get elected in a few years and I suggest it again to them. After all, a precedent will have been set that groups which aren't terrorists can be banned under anti-terror legislation anyway. Democracy will have already been eroded.
I was ready to be disappointed by this Labour government, but I confess that the level of gut-wrenching visceral disgust I am experiencing at them surpassed all my wildest expectations. Taking money from the disabled to buy new war-planes from a fascist US president while abetting a genocide in Gaza makes me wonder if Reform wouldn't be better in the end anyway. At least they might do electoral reform and nationalize the water companies.
Labour's only hope, the country's only hope, is to remove Starmer. I wish you had won that leadership election instead of him.
Anyway, as I say, I don't expect it to make any difference at all because under this election system even MPs in safe seats are nothing but tools of the party leadership and the party leadership seems determined. But I thought I'd let you know that I see you. I see what you are doing.
I support Palestine Action more than I support this government. Let me know where I should hand myself in for my "crime".

Gary's on Tariffs and Trump
What are trade deficits? Rich countries can buy more than poor countries, so the US buys more from China, so there's a trade imbalance. So money/wealth flows from the rich country to the poor one.
So America is in growing debt to China. Tariffs can be erected to slow that flow. You can tax imports instead of income. Great.
Trouble is that tariffs are a regressive tax, and so replacing income taxes with tariffs makes taxes more regressive, moving the tax burden to the poor. Gary takes us through that Progressive and Regressive taxes are.
Initially tariffs were supposed to be targeted at those with highest trade barriers, but Trumps crazy formula targeted the poorest countries with the biggest trade deficit instead. A theoretical attempt to move the worst jobs in the world into America. Would have killed some of the poorest people in the poorest countries. Make clothes expensive in the US to try and make the US have sweat shops again!? Gary finds it so insane he can't barely stop himself laughing. "Low competence implementation" is his euphemism.
"God knows how many cambodians would have died just to make it so American's can't afford trainers". Could have make Nike bankrupt.
"What would you do if you were the chancellor" is a question he gets asked a lot. His answer is that he'd not just make up economic policy and rewrite the economic system on his own on his youtube channel. He'd actually game things out with experts and international cooperation. Trying to do it just by some geeks making up policy in their kitchen is stupid.
Markets crashed. Nobody thinks this can go on. Rich people buying discounted stocks. Gary was buying, mostly on reflex, expecting change in policy.
He'd have sold US bonds if he had any. Everyone else was. started to look like US could go bankrupt.
"Thank fuck, they decided to back down"
"Donald trump is manipulating markets on social media"
Don't listen to what trump says, don't panic into selling, don't let him use tariffs to disadvantage the poor, stand together.
What happens next? Probably deal with China, but if not price increases in the US making the poor poorer. But cheaper prices elsewhere, UK and Europe maybe. Which could reduce inflation and so interest rates.
Who will build a factory in the US now? The rulers seem crazy.
Whole world might well have to rearm because the US isn't their ally any more?
Whole world must reorient their economy to be with China instead of the US now? The US isn't dependable.
It's like international policy run by the Fyre Festival. It's not just trump. It's not even just the US. The whole world is run by idiots.
