New batch of Macintosh magazine cover discs just landed! I’ll start digitizing and archiving these over the weekend.
On first look, there are a good amount in here that I’ve never come across in digital form, so I’m excited to get these into Internet Archive.

The installer on this CD https://archive.org/details/mac-addict-s-utilities is 288K, which usually means there are invisible files hidden somewhere on the CD. Looking around with Greg's Browser, nothing stands out except for that "find me" text file at the root. Maybe that's a pointer to the rest of the installer files or something? ...

I've run across this Zork Nemesis demo on maybe a half-dozen magazine cover CDs, and it fails to install - with the same error message - on every Mac OS version, emulator, or physical computer I try. Has anyone ever actually installed this? Was Infocom distributing a broken installer for years, and no CD editor noticed?

This is one of the older air-cooled multiprocessor models. I’ve seen some nightmare photos of leaked coolant in the other ones, so I’m not sure I’d roll the dice on one of them.

The Mac mini "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 (Mid-2010) is the fastest Mini that will run Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), which is the first Intel-only Mac OS. The Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.0 (2007) is the fastest Intel-based Mini that will run Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Its "Penryn" CPU requires a late build of Tiger to boot (10.4.10), and I had the best luck using the original system restore CDs from Macintosh Garden.

Mac Minis aren't hard to come by. It was straightforward to find each of the specific models I wanted. They aren't the fastest, and there's no G3 or G5 option, but they're low power, compact, and quiet. Just what I was looking for.

A lot of the Tiger/Leopard era Macintoshes I'm a little obsessed with right now don't support booting from USB, and some of their optical drives aren't in great shape. This FireWire drive is saving the day.

This weekend I found the Tigerbrew project, a fork of Homebrew for PowerPC systems. Its lead maintainer @npub1eh5…yenk is on Mastodon.
I use Homebrew every day on modern Macs, and having it available on a retro Mac feels a little bit like magic. Thanks, @npub1eh5…yenk !

The inside doesn’t look horrible from a peek in the access port. 768MB of RAM and a clean (but very dead) battery, which was easy to reach and replace.
