Trofim Lysenko was a Russian "scientist" who was an adamant Stalinist. He was basically put in charge of Russian agro-science due to his pseudo science being easier to understand than actual science, which was - to put it in modern terms 'woke'.
He's seen as singlehandedly setting back Russian science and agriculture generations and costing the lives of millions.
This is pretty much the entire "MAGA" ideology, except that guy was a true believer, while the maga 'leaders' are primarily grifters and thieves in addition to being the normal opsequious syncophants.

did you guys ever check out ScuttleButt (https://scuttlebutt.nz/) It seems to have fallen off the rails, but it was a pretty brilliant Idea of encrypted peer-to-peer social media and messaging. Kind of like a complete mastodon instance running on your local machine and you have a list of "servers" that are really just other machines that you sync up with when you log in. So, when you turn on your PC, it has a list of your friends who are "on" and have registered their IP with anyone who has a "polling" station, kind of like a bittorrent tracker. Then it requests any messages in their out-box, directly. When they "made friends", they generated a key between them. So messages don't leave your PC until they're already encrypted, and then aren't sent until your correspondent requests them, and they decrypt them on their own pc using that shared key.
Unfortunately, it was a bit clunky and slow. But.... I love the idea of eliminating centralized systems entirely, especially now.

what's funny is that Mastodon is wide open, like email, and direct messages can easily be read on the server.
however.... ActivityPub (the base of mastodon) is soon coming out with Messaging Layer Security (MLS) which is an end to end encryption.
AND Mastodon is run on multiple servers. (I actually host my own for the family on a crappy old server in my office)
so it's quite possible that the safest and most stable message system, that cannot be taken down or corrupted by the government, may actually end up being activitypub. lol

I applied for a mortgage, yesterday they were just finishing up and did a "hard pull" on my credit. All looks good, right?
This morning, starting at 8am, I started getting calls from people wanting to sell me mortgages.
It's 2pm and there have been over 30 so far. I called my broker and asked him WTF was going on and had RocketMortgage been hacked or something?
Turns out EXPERIAN SELLS YOUR INFORMATION AS A LEAD WHEN THERE IS A HARD PULL.
Can you fucking believe that? These fuckers are calling me like, "Hi Dan, It's John Smith, I'm calling about your mortgage application. Do you have a minute to help me get some additional information"
And then when I realize he's just a fucking scammer, he's like, "Oh, you filled out an online form and we're just responding.... " and then hung up.
THIRTY CALLS.
I have the Opt-Out and all that stuff done now, but WTF? How the FUCK is that "ok"? If my bank or doctor or insurance company did shit like that.... or do they?
God, I'm so pissed.

people leaving the US will be limited too. Even my inlaws, Chinese Americans born and raised in the USA, are afraid to travel because they are afraid they won't be able to come back. I mean, you'd think that's crazy, but they see green-card people swept up off the street and think, "that's what a lot of my friends have. If they can take them, they can take me too".
And I can't sit here and tell them that's not going to happen, but when they are sending GreenCard holding hairdressers to El Salvadoran prisons - with NO apology and NOT returning them.... well.... wtf is next?

Lots of countries have these gold visas (I know because I've been looking for a way to gtfo of this one and go to europe)
Ours is the EB5 and it's like a million bucks and you have to start a business and then you can apply for a green card and then citizenship. This one simply ditches the business aspect and sells a greencard outright.
And 5 million isn't going to do shit with our deficit. Like, nothing at all. The entire purpose of this type of visa was to get investment into the economy, not "give me the money so I can spend it on tax breaks for billionaires", which is exactly what this bullshit is.

I remember when the supreme court ruled against gay marriage. People protested and held sit-ins and complained online.
Our Mayor, Newsom, Said, "Screw you. My clerk of courts will marry any gay couple. What are you going to do about it?"
And there were lines down the street of people getting married. And THAT is why we have same sex marriage now. Not because of a protest, not because of a lawsuit, but because a democrat just went ahead and said, "Do it and let them come for me".
I hated Newsom until that day. Since then, I still sometimes get irritated with him, but because of that one decision, I've backed him for decades.
We need to be that way if we are going to survive this. We need democrats who are in power and willing to take real risks.

AI has a lot of drawbacks (environmentally, politically, educationally, etc) but it isn't going away - ever.
So, we need to stop tilting at windmills and act to solve the problems. Perhaps legislate that AI servers must be hosted entirely with solar/wind? Perhaps laws that ensure they can't be used if they answer any of a set of several thousand important questions incorrectly. Perhaps legislate that their use in impersonating humans is illegal.
There are ways to make this better that arent simply impossible.

It's so exausting to hear people talk about the bus system "running at a deficit".
What about public works? They're running at a massive deficit! 100%
There are a million roads I never drive on. Those drivers should pay a toll, right? Roads should be self supporting!
Sidewalks, why not? Toll sidewalks! Put giganitc steel gates at each street corner to make sure people pay the sidewalk toll and don't "gate jump"
Don't get me started on those handicap people! Sheesh, that parking costs a TON! Let's privitze it all and I'm sure the capitalistic government system will be much better for wheelchair users, right?

Mastodon really is whole different thing. What's comforting is that it is so decentralized that it can't easily be controlled or shut-down. You can't have douchebag billionaire come and take over *all* the instances. You can't have the government "decide" that Mastodon needs to be "controlled", whereas the new administration could probably pull some crazy shit and take over BlueSky.
We're in for a real ride in the future and there's a legit likelihood that it will be very very bad. Mastodon may end up being a social lifeline.

Well, I took in foster kids that are undocumented. I have a fcikkn palistinaina flag hanging from my office window. I have been beaten and arrested at protests. I've BEEN to the middle east and to africa and Nicaragua.

If I spend a month telling my kids to choose between 2 restaurants and one of them is like, "yah, whatever." and then when we end up going to sushi because that's what his sister wanted, and he's like, "EWWWW I DON"T WANT THIS".
Do I say, "oh my! I'm so sorry. We all decided to go here and you said whatever." My Bad.
No. I tell him, "well, you should have spoken up, because we all discussed this for months and you didn't speak up", and we eat sushi.
To me.... that was a vote. he voted to be represented by his sisters decisions.
He wasn't excluded. He chose that path.

When I ask my kids what they want for dinner, and only one or two speaks up, and the others just shrug, then we get what the others wanted. By that "shrug", they voted. They said, "whatever", I trust those two to make an informed decision.
They voted. Their inaction was "I don't like either and I'll be satisfied with whatever the people who study this stuff choose"
Don't pretend they didn't vote. They voted. That was no "oh shit, I forgot to vote". They voted with inaction.

at this point, would it really matter? The bad guys one, this country is 100% fucked and I don't see ANY way to bring it back in my lifetime, and by the time a generation or two gets the gumption to change things violently, climate change will be out of control and humanity itself will basically be ending.
I don't see a way out. I feel like these people literally cut my children's lives short and it infuriates me.

Nowadays, elections are strictly about getting people to the polls. That's it. We don't need to convince anyone, we just need to get people with common sense to the polls.
There are no real "swing voters" we should be sucking up to. There are no Trump supporters who we should even *consider* wasting our time convincing.
Getting more good people to the polls than he can get deplorables to the polls.

it's far to common to consider "fascism" and "totalitarianism" synonyms.
Fascism itself has a neat history. Originally, it was super progressive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascist_Manifesto
Then, to get broad support, it basically changed to "yah, but elites should be in charge, churches should have power, women shouldn't vote and we should let the state use violence to protect the free market from the evil socialists."
Reminds me of how Republicans always talk about Lincoln and somehow forget about how all the anti-civil rights politicians switched parties and became the backbone of today's republican party.
