yeah, that's a bit the duality i also see. and i think you gave fedi as a nice example. not one person who has a say, but in practice this also means more decisions where decentralisation isn't taken into account, leading to less decentralisation in practice.

i'll try to figure it out from the website too, but maybe some people here know by heart.
For 39c3 i need to get from my hometown to hamburg (and at a later day, the reverse).
Checking https://www.b-europe.com i see different options for different prices. this indicates to me that if i buy tickets for one trip, i can't simply switch trains (eg because of delay, me not getting to the station in time...). the total price to and from hamburg will be over €200.
But this interrail pass exists: https://www.interrail.eu/en/interrail-passes/global-pass#4-days
so conclusions and questions;
- it costs €212, less than if i'd buy the tickets separate.
- do i need reservations, or can i just take the train when it fits me best at the time?
- it's for every train, so does that mean if i miss a train, i can simply hop onto a next option, even if it's a different train?
- I see that for travel inside the country, "You can use your Interrail Global Pass for one outbound and one inbound journey to/from your country of residence (this means you can travel to the exit or entry station, port, or airport)". Do I understand correctly then that i can hop onto the train in my home town, take the "normal" (ie national) train to brussels, and then hop onto the international train, all with the same pass?
this really seems like a very good deal wth o.o

oh! but is port forwarding an option? bc you don't need to set the ddns up on the router, you can generally set it up on the server too, so should be able to use other providers too then. it's basically just a script who runs at certain intervals, checks if the ip address changed, and does a call to the ddns provider if so. the big question is how to get your own domain to change. maybe your registrar allows to use your domain as ddns. there's also providers (indeed like duckdns, i also know of netlib.re but don't have experience with them) who provide a subdomain they control. An option is to use a CNAME (for your own subdomains) or ALIAS (for your own domains) record to point to the ddns subdomain, but not all registrars allow ALIAS records.

- does gdpr require these banners? no, it does not
- are other options possible? yes, there are
- does gdpr say websites are not allowed to use cookies at all? no, it does not
- does gdpr say websites are not allowed to use cookies at all without first getting explicit consent? no, it does not
these are not mutually exclusive. if anyone believes i'm wrong on the claims of what gdpr does and does not require and wants to prove i'm wrong, show the legal text or court case where the respective claim is made explicit. i read through it in the past, afaict, it's not there. if someone doesn't care enough, then don't do that, but claiming things unsubstantiated does not make it suddenly true.

everything is hyperbole. but yeah, i'm sure there can be weird edge cases that are unreasonable. in case of youtube, i'm not having the slightest bit of sympathy for them though. they are very much part of the reason why this law exists in the first place. but unless proven otherwise, i still stand by my claim that these banners are not required. wikipedia and archive.org come to mind who don't have them, and they are big enough that i expect them to have lawyers to advise them on it. and i also very much believe that the advertising world has made these cookie banners as a form of malicious compliance.

that data is not required for providing the service of showing videos, so i can see this could indeed be consider a problem. it's been a while since i read it, but afaik, as many people have already pointed out, gdpr does not require cookie banners (feel free to point me to the text in the gdpr where it does if i'm wrong, i read it, i didn't see it), what it requires is informed consent for usage of personal data outside the scope of the provided service.

tbh, even ttd i don't think necessarily helps in writing better code. i think it's important to properly test the functionality you write in order to keep bugs out. but the way i see people often write it, makes it harder to refactor without breaking tests, even though functionality isn't changing. the result is an extra barrier to refactoring when it would be better to do so, and the tests don't really matter at the moment they are most important. i do agree functional paradigms (immutability being one of them imo) doesn't either. it's just a different way of doing things. for me it works, for others maybe not. i don't have opinions on static typing bc i don't have enough experience to know the difference it makes.

ffiw, according to activity pub, to OP should forward the replies, but it was never implemented like that and it was never really made clear how exactly to do it on a technical level. I don't think it would completely fix it, but partly. Streams has something called "conversation containers". They basically keep a collection of replies, and send Add activities to accepted replies. This should fix most of this problem (doesn't fix the instance blocklist, but that's by design of the instance blocklist), but ofc, this is only a possible future sollution, only if everyone implements it.

I'm obviously not the person who replied there, but from what see, yes that's correctly named racism. Racism is the discrimination and prejudice against a race or ethnicy. The religion is mentioned deliberatly by Wilders for a reason, and that reason is to frame that religion, and it's practicioners, as the problem, even though, as the reply further explains, that's irrelevant to the point being made about terrorism in general. It's about the intent behind how it was said, and that intent is to spread prejudice against this ethnicity. It's a read-between-the-lines thing, because Wilders is very much doing the write-between-the-lines.

My personal vision, which mostly relates to "dividing up", which I believe does lead to a better answer for "how to bake", is that i think we (as in the people on the fediverse as a whole) don't leverage the decentralisation part enough.
I've seen many of the *a*, *b* and *c* discussions, but a lot of the time when I see them on the fediverse itself, they come from people on Mastodon and are already solved problems. It's just that Mastodon (the software project, not the community of people using it) isn't interested in having those solutions (i.e. certain features). But instead of embracing the decentralisation of the network and trying different projects who align more with what the people in question want, they keep having *a*/*b*/*c* discussions who go nowhere, because the people in the specific project they want to see changes in, aren't interested in actually doing *c* or implementing what comes out of it.
To give an example of how I think it can be better; At some point a big group of the people who used Pleroma, weren't happy with its direction any more. They didn't complain and sulk, a big part took action and simply switched to Misskey. You don't need to be a developer or anything like that, it's literally making another account and move. But Misskey is Japanese, and soon it became clear that people here wanted slightly different things from it, so someone forked it into Foundkey. The other part of Pleroma people from that same group, who hadn't moved away from Pleroma yet, forked Pleroma and moved to Akkoma.
Not everyone can or wants to start or fork a software, but that's not needed. You only need one person to do it. And there are already a good bunch of projects who have many features people lament Mastodon doesn't have. Like markup text, reply-controls, more fine-grained moderation, spam mitigation, groups, addressable lists, quote posts, etc.
In practice, this seems to work quite well imo. In my example, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Foundkey... They all have their own focus, but we can still be part of the bigger whole. What I understand the "in-groups" in the article to be (which possibly comes somewhat close the a concept Akkoma calls a "bubble"), can use the software which fits best for them, while remaining part of the bigger whole. And we can experiment in growing our own part of the network in a way that is a good fit for us. And we can keep communication channels open to other projects and to people who try to keep a broader view on things than purely the implementation details, to make sure we keep compatible enough with the rest of the network.
Where it doesn't seem to work well, is where people still have a very centralised way of thinking and try to get all their visions, who are sometimes contradictory, pushed into one single project.
