and a final complexity if you will indulge me thinking out loud about this. The impacts will be different for different individuals. For example people with cystic fibrosis are advised not to be in close proximity. So the calculus as to benefits and risks of screen time and social media are different depending on someone’s state of health either mentally or physically and their individual needs.

If instead of playing Roblox that day everyone went on a car jounrney to have a hike in nature then given the road accident rate staticatically some likely would be involved in a fatal accident. Yea even the impacts of more time spent outside are mixed (if more people do spend time outside). There is much focus socially on the mental health, social and physical benefits of such pursuits. It certainly needs an FAQ page and much more. The volunteer team will be working on all of that. We aren’t a mega corp so some stuff will be unpolished and raw as it develops. The purpose is to ensure organisations and partners around the world work in solidarity to try and maintain an open Internet. So it will be opposing measures that harm human rights and restrict open accesss and supporting measures that are rights-respecting. It will do this by promoting work of the partners in different countries, many for example have highlighted fediverse as solution to problems of big tech.

I’m not sure. The accident data shows injury rates have been decreasing whike screen time increases but that doesn’t mean causation. But given it’s hard to injure yourself sat at a screen compared to doing most other things with your time it’s a plausible hypothesis to be tested that forced reduction in screen time would mean more accidental injury and deaths.

For example how going through Reddit ID process meant Reddit then got you year of birth data to better target people with adds. In less than a year, the government has expanded age verification to such an extent so that soon it will be virtually impossible to be online in the UK without handing over identity documents or biometric data to unregulated companies.

To expand the argument, it’s that organsied bad faith disinformation campaigns undermine the conditions that make expression useful, equal, and democratic. So for example - if a platform has bots that are pumping out disinformation and an algorithm that favours that message then everyone’s else is ability to express themselves is hurt. If that disinformation targets an individual such as a journalist it can also have a chilling effect.

Personally I’m in favour of a lot more parental education and being able to turn on a fully optional child mode which is part of the device setup. So when a parent buys a device that’s part of the account setup journey. But the solution can’t just be tech. It has to be media literacy education and better mental health support for children. Its an optional parental control that a parent can activate and set. The problem is when it’s on by default and you need to pass an ID check to turn off really. There are phones already on market that do this type of thing as well such as HMD Fuse if you really want AI censorship of your child’s device.
